The Town of Truckee is seeking an experienced, highly-motivated, collaborative team member to play a vital role in the Town’s Engineering Division. The primary focus of this position advertisement is to find a key team member to join the Division in either the Assistant or Associate Engineer role, depending on the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate.
The Engineering Division works on the implementation of a variety of Capital Improvement Projects (CIPs) including new trails, roundabouts, streetscape improvements, roadway infrastructure, and miscellaneous Council priorities, such as new parks or new Town facility improvements. This position will be involved in the planning, design, permitting, and construction management of a variety of these types of CIPs. On the private development side, the Division oversees the design and construction of site and right-of-way improvements associated with private development, such as the Soaring Ranch Development (Raley’s shopping center), Truckee Railyard projects, subdivisions, commercial projects, and affordable housing projects. The Assistant/Associate Engineer position is also responsible for administering grant funds when applicable, project budget management, and responding to community requests related to the Engineering Division’s responsibilities, such as sign requests, drainage issues, or traffic concerns.
The distinction between the Assistant/Associate levels is the ability to perform up to the full range of duties assigned, including differing levels of independent use of judgement, under the general supervision of the Senior Engineer or Engineering Manager. The Associate Engineer level requires current registration as a licensed professional engineer in the State of California. The Assistant Engineer does not require registration as a licensed professional engineer, although education in an engineering or related field is desired.
The ideal candidate has experience in various facets of engineering such as plan review, site design, construction inspection, project management, stormwater management, government processes, and traffic engineering, as well as good communication skills for both one-on-one conversations and public presentations. ABOUT THE POSITION
The City of Gilroy is currently recruiting a full-time Senior Civil Engineer for the Utilities Department. In this exciting opportunity the Senior Civil Engineer is poised to play a significant role in designing, implementing, and optimizing utility systems to ensure reliability, efficiency, and sustainability. The City of San Jose Department of Transportation (DOT) is recruiting for highly motivated, technically skilled, public/community service-minded individuals to serve as an  Assistant Arborist. This position performs work of routine difficulty in assisting with the coordination and implementation of the City's Street Tree, Maintenance Assessment Districts, and Median Landscape Programs. The Assistant Arborist is responsible for the daily supervision of technicians, developing and implementing policies and practices that advance the goals of the City's Community Forest Strategic Framework and ensuring compliance with the sections of the City's Municipal Code as it relates to street trees and hardscapes in the public right-of-way. The Assistant Arborist works closely with internal management, administrative, inspection, engineering, and maintenance staff, and has extensive engagement with the public and many other stakeholders.  

Key tasks and responsibilities include:  

• Assists in the planning, developing and coordinating of the City's Trees Park strip Programs for median landscaping, and insect and disease control, including landscape assessment district programs.  

• Coordinates landscape and tree trimming activities with appropriate City Departments and other public agencies (i.e. PG&E and CALTRANS).  

• Consults with public and private contractors on landscape tree and median island maintenance projects.  

• Handles citizen service requests regarding tree and landscape problems.  

• Responds to inquiries regarding tree and landscape problems from citizens and from other City departments.  

• Administers routine contractual work on trimming and removing trees.  

• Prepares contracts for subdivision tree planting, trimming of young and mature trees, replacement tree planting and tree and stump removal.  

• Develops and manages budgets for various sections within DOT.

• Reviews plans and specifications and submittals for conformance to established standards for major construction projects.

• Reviews and makes recommendations concerning proposed projects.

The Engineering & Program Delivery Division:

This division is responsible for the design and construction of all capital projects and infrastructure required to provide a safe, reliable and efficient transportation system for Santa Clara County. These responsibilities include program and project management, design development, engineering management, project controls, construction management and turnover of various projects that are part of VTA's rail, facilities and highway transportation improvement programs.

This division is also responsible for the implementation of the projects identified in the 2000 Measure A Program, which includes the planning, design, and construction of the Eastridge to BART Regional Connector, that connects light rail system to  regional transit systems.

Under general direction, the Transportation Engineering Manager manages staff engaged in a variety of activities, such as the planning and design of transportation systems and facilities, administering large capital budgets, including supervising consultant services; and performs managerial and administrative duties.
 

Distinguishing Characteristics

A position in this classification has direct responsibility for project management and development of VTA projects. This position supervises VTA and consultant staff including mentoring and advising staff, administers large project budgets, and is responsible for projects that range widely in level of complexity, involving management of VTA staff and multiple professional planning, engineering and/or architectural agreements.

Minimum Qualifications:

Employment Standards

Development of the required skills, knowledge and abilities is typically obtained through training and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major work in engineering and six (6) years of increasingly responsible experience in engineering with experience with transportation systems or projects, including at least one year of experience at the Senior Transportation Engineer or comparable level for a transportation agency, public works department, public agency or similar organization.
 

Registration as a professional engineer or professional architect in the State of California is required at the time of appointment.
