Join San Bruno Public Works, as a part-time, temporary Maintenance Assistant!

The San Bruno Public Works Department is committed to delivering responsive, professional, and efficient services that maintain and enhance the City’s infrastructure. With responsibility over streets, storm drains, wastewater collection, water distribution, public facilities, and engineering, the department is committed to providing responsive, high-quality service, and plays a vital role in keeping the city safe, clean, and functional.

Under immediate supervision, part-time maintenance assistants perform a range of unskilled and semiskilled tasks that support the day-to-day upkeep of the City’s infrastructure. This is a part-time, temporary position with the Public Works Department (18-20 hours per week) to support the City’s “Cleanup San Bruno” initiative.

Examples of duties may include, but are not limited to:

• Cleans and removes debris and litter from parking lots, streets, gutters, storm drains, catch basins, and sidewalks, by shoveling, raking, sweeping, and picking up debris.
• Removal and loading of illegal dumping such as tires, mattresses, and furniture.
• Assists in loading, transporting, and unloading equipment, materials, debris, and other heavy objects related to maintenance.
• Operates a City vehicle and power tools necessary to complete maintenance for the above assigned areas.
• Assists with fire hydrant flushing program.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education, experience, and training that would provide the best qualified candidates. Applicants should have the ability to read, write and carry out oral and written directions. Applicants should also have the ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. Ideal candidates will have knowledge of proper use and care of common hand tools, skills performing manual work, and lifting heavy objects up to 50 pounds. Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical and drug test.

Special Requirements:

• Possession of a valid California driver’s license with good driving record (DMV printout required).

What You’ll Do

The Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) Mechanic I/II performs semi‑skilled and skilled work in the installation and repair of pumps, motors, chain drives, valves and related equipment and to do related work as required.  The WWTP Mechanic I is the entry level class in the Plant Mechanic series.  Positions in this class normally perform beginning level mechanical repair and maintenance work on a wide variety of wastewater quality control plant systems and equipment. Under this class series concept, positions assigned to the class of Plant Mechanic II may reasonably be filled at the Plant Mechanic I level.  The WWTP Mechanic II is the journey level class in the Plant Mechanic series. Positions assigned to this class are flexibly staffed and are expected to perform the most skilled repair and maintenance work and have a thorough knowledge of the operational characteristics, maintenance and repair methods and techniques and most typical system difficulties for the full range of equipment and operational systems in the plant. All positions assigned to this class require the ability to work independently, exercising judgment and initiative. Plant Mechanics II may also be expected to assist in the supervision of less experienced personnel.

Depending upon assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Operate machines and tools in repairing defective parts of pumps, compressors, generators, motors, lift stations, boilers and related mechanical equipment.

• Maintain accurate mechanical maintenance records.

• Install, repair, replace, and modify pumps, controllers, bearings, seals, hydraulic pipes, timing devices and assist in installing telemetering electrical equipment.

• Use a variety of power hand tools, cutting and welding equipment and electrical test equipment. Fully utilize the computerized work systems in accordance with work flow processes.

• Perform preventive maintenance on wastewater treatment plant mechanical and electrical equipment. Evaluate equipment performance and identify problem areas.

• Maintain stock inventory and adequate supply of replacement parts.

• Plant mechanics may be required to respond to emergency situations after normal working hours and be subject to serve on emergency stand-by alert and call out status on a rotational basis, including participation in rotating stand-by duties.

• Analyze or create documents, such as blueprints, markings, surveys, etc. to problem solve the most effective approach to a task.

• Verify the work of others for accuracy, proper work methods, techniques, and compliance.

• Formulate solutions to problems with equipment or operations, including logistics, operations, and processes.

• Draft operating procedures.

The Wastewater Treatment Plant Mechanic I/II receives supervision from the Wastewater Treatment Plant Maintenance Superintendent or Wastewater Treatment Plant Mechanic III as directed technical or functional supervision may be provided by higher level treatment plant maintenance personnel.  Assignments may require indirect supervision of less experienced plant maintenance personnel.

San Mateo Consolidated Fire Department

The San Mateo Consolidated Fire Department commenced operations on January 13, 2019 and serves the cities of Belmont, Foster City, and San Mateo as a Joint Powers Authority. The Department collectively has ten engines and two trucks operating out of nine fire stations. There are 164 full-time employees assigned to one of the following divisions: Administration, Community Risk Reduction, and Fire Operations. The Opportunity:

To perform technical inspection and investigative work in enforcing compliance with laws, ordinances and regulations pertaining to the prevention and control of fires; and do related work as required. The Fire Prevention Inspector I/II position is flexibly staffed based on experience.

This is the entry level class in the Fire Prevention Inspection series. This class is distinguished from the Fire Prevention Inspector II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series including weed abatement and smoke detector inspections, which do not require prior specialized experience. Generally, work is observed and reviewed both during performance and upon completion, and changes in procedures and exceptions to rules are explained in detail as they arise. Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience.

What You’ll Do:

• Interpret and enforce provisions of fire prevention and fire safety laws, ordinances, and other regulations.
• Perform periodic inspections of new and existing buildings, structures and installations requiring fire clearances; identify fire hazards; recommend corrective actions; perform follow-up inspections to see that corrective actions have been taken.
• Investigate complaints pertaining to violation of fire prevention laws; issue correction orders as necessary.
• Investigate fires; secure fire scenes; identify types of fires; investigate causes of fire; collect, prepare, and present evidence; interview witnesses and suspects; write fire investigations; testify in court when required.
• Provide information to the public concerning the fire prevention practices and procedures; develop and conduct training programs and group presentations relative to fire prevention and fire investigation.
• Instruct fire suppression crews about code interpretation and inspection techniques regarding fire prevention.
• Draw and prepare diagrams of buildings for pre-fire planning and fire inspections.
• Check building plans for code compliance, consult with architects and developers regarding problems and solutions.
• Perform tests on water flow, sprinkler and fire alarms and elevator return systems; certify smoke detectors.
• Prepare records and reports.
• Provide information to the public in forums and meetings.
• Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

The County of San Mateo's Department of Public Works is seeking applications for the position of Electrician. 

 

Electricians are responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems and equipment in and around County buildings. This position requires the ability to work independently in different locations with minimal supervision. While much of the work is performed independently, the Construction Services section is characterized by a strong sense of teamwork and camaraderie.

Construction Services Section
Construction Services offers specialized crafts services that go beyond routine maintenance provided by the Facilities Operations and Maintenance section. We partner with the County and Cities to deliver carpentry, graffiti abatement, and lighting district services. Our skilled team, including craftsmen, maintenance workers, utility workers, and office support staff, handles diverse tasks from remodels to new construction projects. Trades represented include electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and painting, ensuring comprehensive solutions for our clients.

The ideal candidate for this position will have:

• Eight or more years of experience performing Journey-level facilities maintenance electrical work.
• A Journeyman's Electrician Card (certificate).
• Excellent computer skills including familiarity with mobile applications.
• Experience with IT cabling.
• The ability to work independently. 

Electricians work at various locations throughout San Mateo County (County Facilities/Buildings, San Mateo Medical Center, Hall of Justice, Maguire Correctional Facility, Maple Street Correctional Center, Youth Services Center, and multiple Community Resource Centers within the county).

The selected candidate for this job must undergo a thorough background check by the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office and fill out a comprehensive security clearance form. They must maintain their security clearance throughout their employment and be cleared to work in locked facilities that house incarcerated individuals.

The Superior Court of California, San Mateo County is seeking highly qualified individuals for the position of Court Commissioner. 

The appointment to this position shall be by the judges of the superior court and shall be under the general direction of the presiding judge.

Pursuant to California Rules of Court, candidates must have been admitted to practice law in California for at least 10 years or, on a finding of good cause by the presiding judge, for at least 5 years.

The commissioner’s duties include the subordinate judicial duties set forth in Code of Civil Procedures 259, which include but are not limited to conducting judicial hearings in a broad range of civil proceedings which may include family law, making findings of facts in traffic, small claims, and criminal proceedings, and performing other subordinate judicial activities as may be conferred by law or by order of the court.

There are currently two vacancies for Court Commissioners.  One position is a regular position and the second is a limited term position.  Limited term positions are full-time, temporary assignments not to exceed three years. Limited term employees receive medical and dental benefits, like regular employees, and a defined contribution retirement plan.

The County of San Mateo Procurement Division is seeking an experienced procurement professional for the position of Contract Administrator II (CA II). This position will provide procurement advice and assistance to departmental procurement staff throughout the County. The Procurement Division supports 23 departments within the County.

As of April 2024, procurement within the County is handled through OpenGov Procurement (OpenGov) software. Experience with OpenGov is desired but not required. OpenGov training will be provided to the CA II staff member.

Under supervision, the CA II will:

• Advise staff on solicitation development and contract management policies and processes.
• Assist staff with questions related to navigating OpenGov.
• Work on procurement projects.
• Participate in the development of procurement policy and training.
• Deliver procurement training to staff.
• Complete other procurement related work on an as-needed basis.

CA II is the fully experienced, journey level class in this series, capable of independently performing the full range of procurement work. The CA II should be knowledgeable regarding solicitation creation for professional services and contract administration duties.  The selected candidate will use their experience to advise staff on how to navigate and improve their procurement processes.  The CA II will be given substantial latitude in determining approach, procedures, systems, and methods in accomplishing the work goals.  The CA II will make basic programmatic decisions that require the exercise of independent judgment will be responsible for coordinating multiple functions or processes. An Incumbent at this level is typically assigned the more complex contracts.

The CA II staff member will have strong communication skills and professional conduct. They will be expected to provide excellent customer service while explaining procurement to county-wide staff. They will be comfortable creating and delivering trainings to staff on procurement topics.

Confidence in learning new technology will be important to this role. The CA II will be expected to become an advanced user of OpenGov and assist staff with navigating the software.

• Provide procurement technical assistance and consultation to County departments.
• Review and understand the existing procurement resources (handbook and instruction materials and videos) and connect staff with the appropriate resources for their questions.

The City of San Mateo Community Development Department is looking to fill two (2) Development Review Technician I/II/Senior vacancies.

What You’ll Do
The Development Review Technician I/II/Senior performs a wide variety of technical, paraprofessional support, and customer service duties related to building permits and development or planning applications; serves the public at the Community Development Department Permit Center; and performs other related work as required. 

Development Review Technician I - This is the entry level class in the Development Review Technician series that allows the employee to develop journey-level knowledge and skills. Positions in this class typically have little or no directly related work experience. The Development Review Technician I class is distinguished from the II level by the performance of less than the full range of duties assigned to the II level. Incumbents work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks, progressing to general supervision as procedures and processes of assigned area of responsibility are learned. Employees are expected to demonstrate proficiency and advance to the Development Review Technician II classification. Development Review Technician I receives immediate supervision from the Permit Center Supervisor or higher-level department personnel and may receive training and guidance from a Development Review Technician II or Senior Development Review Technician.

Development Review Technician II - This is the journey level class in the Development Review Technician series and is distinguished from the I level by the assignment of the full range of duties. Employees at this level receive occasional instruction or assistance as new, unusual or unique situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit. They may assist with training of employees in the Development Review Technician I classifications and perform more difficult and complex duties. The Development Review Technician II receives general supervision from the Permit Center Supervisor or higher-level department personnel and may receive technical and functional lead direction from a Senior Development Review Technician. May provide training and guidance to Development Review Technician I.

Senior Development Review Technician – This is the advanced journey level in the Development Review Technician series. Positions at this level are distinguished from other classes within the series by the level of responsibility assumed, complexity of duties assigned, independence of action taken, by the amount of time spent performing the duties, and by the nature of the public contact made. Employees perform the most difficult and complex duties and serve as a lead worker to employees in the Development Review Technician I and Development Review Technician II classifications. Employees at this level are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to assigned areas of responsibility. Senior Development Review Technician receives direction from the Permit Center Supervisor or higher-level department personnel. Serves as a lead worker over Development Review Technicians I/II.

The Senior Development Review Technician is a flexibly staffed classification, and positions are generally filled by advancement from the journey level class of Development Review Technician II through a competitive process, or, when filled from the outside, require prior and advance development review or permit technician work experience.

Depending upon assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: 

Development Review Technician I/II 

• Assist the public at the Permit Center, provide customer service in person, by phone or by email regarding building and development review submittal/application requirements, including but not limited to applicable fees, plan review, permitting, inspection processes and project status. 
• Screen and review building permit and development review applications for completeness; enter permit data into permitting software database; route plans and specifications to all applicable City departments and/or outside agencies for review, track plan review process 
• Compile building permit and related data as directed, prepare various reports. Review and issue permits for minor applications for conformance with ordinances, applicable state law and department's standards, policies, and guidelines. 
• Calculate various fees, prepare fee estimates and apply fees to permits or other development review billings. 
• Approve and issue over-the-counter permits. 
• Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using practical principles of good customer service. 
• Foster an environment that embraces diversity, integrity, trust, and respect. 
• Be an integral team player, which involves flexibility, cooperation, and communication. 
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Senior Development Review Technician 
In addition to the duties listed above, duties may include the following: 

• Plan, prioritize, and review the work of staff assigned to a variety of development review support duties. 
• Assist the general public with questions regarding building and development review/permit requirements. 
• Accept building permit and development review applications, act as lead on complicated plan check input and questions. 
• Participate in evaluating the activities of staff, recommending improvements and modifications. 
• Coordinate and prepare counter coverage and daily/weekly task rotation schedules. 
• Provide and coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies. 
• Compile building related data as directed; prepare various reports.
