California Basic POST (Peace Officer Standards and Training) Certificate - The Basic Certificate is awarded, as defined in Regulation 1011, to currently employed full-time peace officers of a POST-participating agency who have satisfactorily completed the prerequisite Basic Course requirement and the employing agency's probationary period.

Qualifications

Certificate: As required by the State of California, incumbents at this level must possess a valid California Basic POST Certificate.

Education: High school diploma or its equivalent.

License: Valid California Class C Driver License or equivalent.

Background: No felony convictions and no recent drug use.

Physical Requirements: Must be free from any condition which might adversely affect fitness for the duties of the position; uncorrected visual acuity of at least 20/100 in each eye, correctable to 20/30 in each eye; weight must be in proportion to height.

Other requirements: Willing to work irregular hours, holidays, weekends, and rotating shifts. Refrain from using tobacco products at any time for employees hired by the County after October 1, 2004.

THE POSITION

The Police Dispatcher/Clerk is a non-sworn technical and complex clerical support classification associated with law enforcement support services assigned in the Town Police Department.  Police Dispatcher/Clerks learn and perform a variety of responsible records management, communications and dispatching duties for emergency and non-emergency calls for service. 

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Dispatches police officers to calls for service
• Provides assistance, information and directions to non-emergency callers including but not limited to police, fire, paramedic, animal control and public utilities calls for service, forwards non-emergency calls to proper personnel or departments
• Maintains awareness of field unit activities; communicates with field units through radio in accordance with Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations; maintains status and location of units on patrol
• Retrieves information from State and National computer networks regarding wanted persons, stolen property, vehicle registration, stolen vehicles and other related information
• Enters call information into computer systems; logs and completes call forms, maintains records of calls for service and self-initiated officer activities

The Position:

This is a non-sworn classification structured for incumbents hired for the purpose of becoming a sworn police officer.  Police Officer Trainees are hired into this civilian position for the period prior and during the time they are assigned to a POST-certified Basic Law Enforcement Academy.  Upon successful completion of training at the academy and upon the availability of a Police Officer position, Police Officer Trainees are sworn in and appointed to the classification of Police Officer.  Police Officer Trainee benefits are limited to those of a civilian employee.

THE POSITION:

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS – INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:

• Attend a POST-certified Basic Law Enforcement Academy designed to provide an overview of the criminal justice system including knowledge of laws, police procedures, law enforcement techniques, first aid and physical fitness.
• Receive training to develop an awareness of Police Department functions, as well as the responsibilities of Police Officers and how those responsibilities relate to field operations.
• Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Background: • As part of the selection process, successful candidates will undergo a stringent background investigation which will include: confirming all information provided by the candidates, a polygraph test and psychological and medical examinations. Candidates may be disqualified at any point in this process. Felony Convictions: • State and Federal Law require that all Police Officers be free from felony conviction and domestic violence. Citizenship: • Applicants must be U.S. Citizens or resident aliens that are eligible and have applied for U.S. Citizenship.
