THE POSITION: The Dixon Police Department is recruiting to fill full-time Police Officer positions at either the Academy Graduate Level or Lateral Level, as well as establish an employment eligibility list for future possible use. The City offers a challenging and rewarding opportunity for qualified applicants pursuing a law enforcement career. Dixon Police Officers are responsible for a wide variety of generalist police services. Opportunities for specialization and advancement are also available. The Dixon Police Department operates on a 12-hour shift schedule.

SELECTION PROCESS:  Apply immediately and include all required documents at the time application is submitted.  Applications and supplemental questions will be reviewed and screened, and the most qualified candidates will be invited to continue in the examination process. The process includes a Personal History Statement (PHS) review, interview, Poly exam, extensive personal background investigation, credit history, pre-employment medical, with drug test, and psychological assessments.

DEFINITION

Under general supervision, subject to exercise of individual judgment and initiative, to perform law enforcement and crime prevention work; to control traffic flow and enforce state and local traffic regulations; and to do related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

An incumbent in this position performs a variety of law enforcement activities during an assigned shift, which may include crime response, patrol, investigation, traffic enforcement, crime prevention and public safety, case presentation and variable shifts. They wear uniforms, carry weapons, drive patrol cars or ride motorcycles and must comply with departmental grooming standards. In addition, they work under potentially adverse and hazardous conditions and are on call.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

To qualify for competition in this entry-level examination, you must:

1.         Be 21 years of age.

2.         Possess a United States high school diploma, or G.E.D. with qualifying scores, or have passed the California High School Proficiency Examination, or attained a two-year or four-year degree from a college or university accredited by the Western Association of Colleges and Universities.

3.        Have satisfactorily completed a P.O.S.T. approved academy.

4.         Possess a valid Class CCalifornia Driver's License by date of appointment.

5.         Possess a personal history which is compatible with the effective performance of sworn police duties.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES

Training: High school graduate or equivalent qualification, and 30 semester units from an accredited college or university desired (not required)
 

Certification: Must pass a comprehensive physical examination, meeting the standards established by the California Commission on Peace Officers Standards & Training (POST)
 

License: Possession and maintenance of a California Class C driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record.
 

Minimum requirements for lateral entry officers:

• Must meet all minimum requirements for entry level officer with the exception of written and agility examination requirements.
• Must possess a POST Basic Certificate.
• A minimum of one-year satisfactory past police patrol experience within the past three years.
• Must have no record of felony criminal convictions or misdemeanor convictions that could affect credibility as a witness in a court of law.
• Vision and hearing capabilities consistent with guidelines by POST and/or the City.
• Must be of good moral character to be determined by a thorough background investigation, which will be conducted under POST guidelines.

The City of Dixon is opening a great opportunity for those interested in contributing to local law enforcement efforts for the position of Police Volunteer in the Police Department. Under the direction and supervision of experienced police personnel, volunteers will provide critical support across various functions, complementing the efforts of sworn officers and civilian staff.

This is a volunteer position intended as an educational and community service experience. In addition to serving a support role within the Police Department, this classification is exposed to a wide variety of law enforcement duties and will have different opportunities, based on level of interest, to support community policing efforts and activities.

Work involves irregular, often non-scheduled, hours during the day and evenings, and on the weekdays, weekends, and holidays. Some appointments and events would require some short distance travel to other City department locations.

Employment Processing: Those selected for hire must successfully complete and pass the following: a personal background investigation, and a pre-employment medical examination. In accordance with Federal law, an employee must provide proof of identity and legal right to work in the United States.

POSITION

The City of Daly City is looking for people interested in working 10-20 hours per week in a variety of settings selected by the Department of Library and Recreation Services. Our current openings are in the Recreation Division and may be in the areas of the Afterschool Youth Recreation Program, Aquatics Program or Facility Attendant. This position will report directly to the Recreation Program Coordinator or Recreation Program Supervisor and will work various hours throughout the week, including evenings and weekends

DEFINITION

Under general supervision, a Recreator III independently performs assigned tasks which serve the public use of municipal recreation facilities and other duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Open and close facilities following established guidelines, set up equipment needed for facility programs, perform routine maintenance and cleanup for assigned facilities, collect fees for facility use, maintain order and discipline in assigned facilities and programs by enforcing City and Departmental policies, may facilitate in assigned program areas, may supervise other part-time staff, volunteers, or court workers as assigned, and maintain accurate records and reports. May include specific assignments such as senior swim instructor, senior lifeguard, facility attendant and assisting with after school or summer programs. Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of: General facility operations, intermediate lesson instruction techniques for assigned area, and safety practices for assigned programs.

Ability to: Follow written and oral instructions, meet and communicate effectively with members of the public, carry out assignments requiring average physical strength such as setting up tables and chairs, learn and progress in this position, direct others, understand and enforce written and oral rules, regulations and policies, solve minor disciplinary problems, interact positively and cooperate with co-workers, respond politely to customers, work as a team member, function under demanding time pressure, respond in a positive manner to supervision, and attend work and perform duties on a regular and consistent basis.

Experience: A minimum of two years working or volunteering with people in a customer service position.

Education: Graduation from high school or equivalent.

License: Possession of a valid Class C California Driver’s License is desirable.

Certification:  Possession of an American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification is required to work in the Aquatics area as a lifeguard.  Possession of an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification is desirable to work in the Aquatics area as swim instructor.

Emphasis One: FACILITY ATTENDANT:

Examples of Duties:

Responsible for overseeing facilities and parks during reservations, programs, and activities. Supervise facility events; ensure facility is set-up according to event requirements including all official city supported meetings/special events. Check condition of amenities and ensure cleanup requirements are met by renters. Educate public of Recreation Division classes, programs, activities, and events. Monitor youth sports programs within the facilities; address participant and parent concerns; provide lead direction to sports officials. Routinely adhere to and maintain a positive attitude toward City and Department goals.

Knowledge Of:

Basic office/customer service skills (answering phone calls, talking to patrons etc.)

Emphasis Two: LIFEGUARD:

Example of Duties:

Educate patrons in water safety, provide patrons with a safe aquatic environment, perform lifeguard secondary duties, and instruct swim lessons. Promote aquatic programs, assisting senior guard, and aquatics assistant. Conduct rescue operations and administer CPR and First Aid. Direct communication and contact with swimmers and the public.

Knowledge of:

Basic child guidance principles and practices. General techniques of various swim strokes.

Ability to:

Be active, lift and/or carry equipment and supplies. Work in a leadership role with children and adults

Emphasis Three: YOUTH PROGRAM LEADER:

Examples of Duties:

Assists in preparing instructional, craft, and other materials; participates in, and encourages, play activities with the children; may assist in providing tutorial and/or remedial activities in small groups. Provides support duties for child development services in Youth Services programs; prepares and serves snacks based on established guidelines; performs clean-up and food storage duties. Assists with maintaining required and appropriate documentation; including observation notes, logs, and other records. Established in 1866, the San Francisco Fire Department is rich in tradition and history. Today, the San Francisco Fire Department serves an estimated 1.5 million people, providing fire suppression, fire prevention and emergency medical services to the residents, visitors and workers within San Francisco's 49 square miles.

Under general supervision, an H002 Firefighter engages in firefighting and related activities for the saving of life and property; administers first responder treatment, including first aid; and responds to a variety of emergency situations involving public safety and medical care. A Firefighter also may be assigned duties in connection with fire prevention activities, including the inspection of businesses, schools, and homes to ensure fire safety; maintaining station quarters; and performing other duties as assigned. A Firefighter must cooperate and work effectively with the other members of his or her team.

Age: Applicants must be at least 19 years old at the time of application and must be at least 20 years old at the time of appointment. [Civil Service Rule 310.15]

Education: Applicants must have a high school diploma or an equivalency certificate (e.g., G.E.D., California High School Proficiency Certificate) to apply.

Driving Record: Applicants must possess a valid Class A, B, or C California Driver License by the time of their appointment. Applicants will not be considered eligible to participate or to be appointed if any of the following occurred, or is in effect at any time, during the period from “one year prior to application up to the date of appointment”:

(a) Any offense that subsequently results in a conviction for driving under the influence, reckless driving, or hit and run with personal injury or property damage over $25.00.
(b) License suspension or revocation, three moving violations in 12 months, 5 moving violations in 24 months, or probation as a result of a driving-related offense.

Criminal Record: Applicants must not have been convicted of a felony in this state, or in any other state or in any federal or other jurisdiction, of an act that would be considered a felony if committed in this state. Applicants must not have been on probation for a misdemeanor offense from one year prior to application through the time of appointment. Convictions for misdemeanors within one year prior to application will be evaluated individually and may result in disqualification.

FCTC SEL minimum qualifications are:

• Cal-JAC CPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test) Card must be dated within one year.
• A passing score of 70% on the FCTC Written Test must be dated within one year from

the eligible list posting.

• Current NREMT, CA EMT-1 or CA EMT-P.

1) Firefighter Candidate Testing Center (FCTC) Written Test
The FCTC Written Test was developed by the California Firefighter Joint Apprenticeship

Committee (Cal-JAC).
The FCTC Written Exam is a 100 question, multiple choice test consisting of the following four

sections:

• Section 1 – Recall and Comprehend Verbal and Visual Information. This section requires candidates to watch two short videos and answer questions based on the scenarios presented.
• Section 2 – Apply Mechanical Reasoning
• Section 3 – Solve Mathematical Problems
• Section 4 – Recall and Comprehend Technical Information from Written Materials

The FCTC Written Test is administered, at minimum, quarterly. Additional tests will be added as needed, so check this website frequently. FCTC does not administer online tests.

Scores will be added to a candidate's FCTC record within one week of the test date. Candidates must achieve a minimum passing score of 70%. The Public Safety Team will obtain candidate scores from FCTC.

2) Emergency Medical Technician Certification: Candidates must possess at minimum an NREMT certification verified through FCTC to be placed on the eligibility list. Candidates must possess or be in the process of obtaining their EMT - 1 Certification (EMT-1) issued by the State of CA in order to be invited to the Chief’s Interview. Possession of a current, valid CA Paramedic license [in good standing] may be provided in lieu of the EMT certification. Confirmation of your EMT-1 application with the SF EMSA will be verified by the SFFD during the Chief’s Interview. Candidates must be able to accredit with the local EMS Authority within the one-year probationary period if accredited in a different California County. Candidates who currently hold an EMT-1 certificate issued by the National Registry may find information about transferring EMT certification to CA at https://emsa.ca.gov/EMT/.

3) Candidates must have a valid CPAT with a testing date within one year during the Chief’s Interview and maintain their CPAT through the date background packets are due.

Candidate names will remain on the eligible list for a maximum period of 24 months. The Fire Department has the authority to hire any candidate named on the eligible list (“Rule of List”). Therefore, one’s placement on this list neither guarantees nor implies an offer of employment. Candidates who receive an offer of employment may waive the offer only two times. A third waiver of appointment renders candidates ineligible.
