Post Certificate Incentives
Officers with Intermediate Post Certificate receive an additional 5%

Special Assignment Pay

Members of our team are eligible for specialized assignments with compensation incentives:

Detective/School Resource Officer - Additional 2.5% of base salary

Motorcycle - Additional 2.5% of base salary 

Field Training Officer - Additional 2% of base salary

Bilingual Pay - up to $150 per month

K-9 Handler - Additional seven hours of additional pay at 1.5 rate and seven of overtime each pay period

Information Technology Super User - Additional 5% of base salary

SPECIAL PAY INCENTIVES:

THE DEPARTMENT: The Suisun City Police Department is a progressive and proactive law enforcement agency. As a result of its proximity to neighboring jurisdictions, the employees of the Suisun City Police Department remain extremely busy as they address the needs of the community.

THE POSITION: Under general supervision of a Police Sergeant or other supervisory/management staff, performs a variety of duties related to the protection of public health, safety, and welfare and the enforcement of applicable federal, state, and local laws; provides traffic enforcement and control; and carries out special assignments in a particular phase of police work. The Police Officer is an entry/journey level class responsible for performance of the full scope of assigned law enforcement duties and responsibilities. New incumbents may have limited related experience but are expected to learn the full range of duties and responsibilities, perform duties with minimal direct supervision, and exercise sound judgment and discretion in making decisions.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

• Patrols assigned areas of the City to preserve law and order, discover and prevent commission of crimes, and enforce traffic and other laws and ordinances; maintains awareness of and remains alert for wanted suspects, known criminals, stolen vehicles, missing persons, traffic violators, and crimes in progress; makes arrests; issues warnings and citations.
• Responds to calls for the protection of life and property, the enforcement of laws and ordinances, general public service calls, and complaints including those involving automobile accidents, traffic hazards, misdemeanor and felony incidents, domestic disturbances, health code and local ordinance violations, property control, civil complaints, and related incidents; responds to and provides assistance at a variety of public service type calls that are non-criminal in nature.
• Conducts initial and follow-up investigations at scenes of incidents to which summoned or observed; determines what, if any, crime has been committed; collects, preserves, processes, photographs, and books evidence; locates and interviews victims and witnesses; identifies and interrogates suspects. • Prepares and serves search and arrest warrants; apprehends and arrests offenders for crimes committed under federal, state, and local laws and codes; controls and mitigates people under the influence of drugs or alcohol or other potentially hostile situations.
• Directs traffic at special events or emergency situations; provides traffic and crowd control at community and emergency events.

Equivalent to completion of an Associate's degree from an accredited college

License and Certificates:

Possession of and ability to maintain a valid California Driver’s License.

Possession of a POST (Peace Officer Standards & Training) written examination certificate with a preferred T-Score of 52 or above and a passing score for the WSTB physical agility examination. Or possession of a National Testing Network Law Enforcement written examination certificate with a preferred score in the 90th percentile and a passing score for the WSTB physical agility examination.

Necessary Special Qualifications:

Free of any felony convictions.

Effective January 1, 2023, peace officers must be legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law. There are no specific citizenship requirements per Senate Bill 2. California Government Code Section 1031(h) limits employment authorization documents to those consistent with Section 274a.2 of Title 8 of the Code of Federal Regulations. Specific documentation requirements can be found on the I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification form issued by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Government Code section 1031(g) permits departments to adopt additional and/or higher standards.

Age not less than 21-years-old at time of appointment to the rank of police officer.

Vision in each eye, correctable to at least 20/30.

Must pass a background investigation.

Must meet all Department medical, physical and psychological standards.

The Position:

This is a non-sworn classification structured for incumbents hired for the purpose of becoming a sworn police officer.  Police Officer Trainees are hired into this civilian position for the period prior and during the time they are assigned to a POST-certified Basic Law Enforcement Academy.  Upon successful completion of training at the academy and upon the availability of a Police Officer position, Police Officer Trainees are sworn in and appointed to the classification of Police Officer.  Police Officer Trainee benefits are limited to those of a civilian employee.

Enforces Federal, State and Municipal laws and ordinances; performs patrol duties in cars, on motorcycles or bicycles, and on foot as required; enforces State and local traffic laws to regulate traffic, and investigates accidents; answers calls for service and the protection of life and property; makes arrests as required and testifies in court; performs crime prevention duties and community relations activities; interfaces with all City departments to insure the utmost service to the citizens of Campbell; prepares reports; services and maintains departmental equipment; may relieve or assist Records or Communications personnel.

Typical Duties: 

• Enforces Federal, State and Municipal laws and ordinances;
• Performs patrol duties in cars, on motorcycles or bicycles, and on foot as required;

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education/Experience: 

• Completion of 60 semester units or 90 quarter units from an accredited college or university. (college units must be completed at time of application)
• Completion of a POST approved basic academy. 

Possession of: 

• Valid California Driver's License
• POST Academy Graduation Certificate
• First Aid Card & CPR Certificate 

Additional Requirements:

• Must be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for, and who has applied for, citizenship at least one year prior to application for employment. Application for citizenship shall not have been denied.
• Pre-employment: ability to pass drug and alcohol test; candidates must not have been convicted by any state or by the federal government of a crime, the punishment for which could have been imprisonment in a federal penitentiary or a state prison.
• Physical capacity to meet standards established by the City of Campbell
• Weight in proportion to height.
• 20/20 corrected vision in both eyes.  20/30 uncorrected vision (both eyes) for those wearing glasses or hard contact lenses.  Uncorrected vision requirements may be waived for persons wearing soft contact lenses upon verification of vision stability.
• If military veteran, discharges other than honorable will be evaluated on an individual basis.
• Satisfactory results on appropriate written, medical, background and psychiatric examinations.

Probationary Period: Upon date of hire and 18 months following the date of swearing in as a Police Officer

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION AND POLYGRAPH TEST
An intensive background investigation will be conducted on each final candidate in accordance with the Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission Peace Officer Background Investigations Guidelines. Candidates will also be required to successfully pass a polygraph test administered by a licensed polygrapher, a psychological exam given by a City-selected psychologist and a medical exam by a City physician (to include a stress test EKG and general physical examination). The results of the psychological exam are valid for one year. Suitability for employment will also be based on the following POST job dimensions: problem-solving ability, learning ability, observation skills, willingness to confront problems, interest in people, interpersonal sensitivity, desire for self-improvement, dependability, integrity, credibility as a witness in a court of law, communication skills, judgment under pressure and physical ability.
