The Department: 

The City of Santa Clara is looking to fill multiple As-Needed- Temporary Employee positions to support the Annual Cleanup Campaign. Successful incumbents will be assigned to work as ground crews shoving, sweeping, and lifting up to 50lbs of debris left by Santa Clara residents.

The Position: 

In this temporary employment opportunity, you will gain valuable experience working with the public and demonstrate teamwork amongst your peers as you become part of a dedicated crew.

A mandatory paid orientation is tentatively scheduled for April, 2026, where employees will receive training, safety boots, and the necessary equipment to perform the job. This position will work from 6:45am-4:15pm, 40-45 hours a week, Monday-Friday between April 27, 2026 - May 22, 2026. 

As an as-needed employee, this is an "at-will" position and there is no guarantee of hours. Hours are limited to 999 in a fiscal year or 960 hours in a fiscal year for retired CalPERS annuitants.

Typical Duties:

Duties may include, but are not limited, to the following:

Under immediate supervision:

• Operates a Class C license vehicle, hauling personnel, materials, and equipment to and from various work sites;
• Loads and unloads trash and assists in the work required to maintain the cleanliness of the City;
• Represents the City in contacts with property owner, answering questions pertaining to City services;
• Assists in setting up and staffing traffic safety work zones;
• Refers complaints to superior;
• Maintains daily records of activities; and
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

About the Position: The Supervising Ranger is a dynamic and impactful leadership role with broad responsibility, exercising sound judgement and meaningful independence, while overseeing patrol operations across Midpen preserves. The position leads and mentors a team of sworn district peace officers, coordinates emergency response efforts, builds positive relationships with the public and key stakeholders, represents the District at public meetings, and works collaboratively with departments throughout the organization.

Assigned Location: Midpen is currently seeking to fill one Supervising Ranger position, reporting to an Area Superintendent. This assignment is scheduled to begin in July 2026, and will be based at the Foothills Field Office in Cupertino (Address: 501 Rancho San Antonio Drive, Cupertino, CA 95014). The District reserves the right to reassign employees to other locations as staffing and service requirements evolve.

Working Conditions: Work is performed in a combination of indoor and outdoor environments.  Outdoor work includes exposure to inclement weather conditions. • Possession of a valid Professional Rescuer Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain, the level of certification in the Incident Command System courses as specified under the National Incident Management System (NIMS).
• Possession of, or ability to obtain, a District approved Wildland Fire Suppression Training certification.

About the Position:  The Facilities Maintenance Specialist is responsible for performing all aspects of facilities maintenance for Midpen’s Administrative Office, including building operations, vehicle fleet inspections, landscaped grounds, parking areas, and various physical systems such as HVAC, plumbing, painting, assembly, construction, electrical, data cabling, and security systems.  This unique position has a foundation in older residential property improvements in a rural setting, including spring systems, old style construction including log framing, historic farm building construction, multiple materials and additions to the buildings are all aspects and considerations for repairs and tenant improvements. This position is also responsible for non-routine repairs and improvements at Midpen’s field properties and performs preventative maintenance tasks, repairs, and minor improvement projects. The Facilities Maintenance Specialist will coordinate  and oversee Midpen’s utilization of contractors and act as a point of contact for a wide range  of maintenance and repair tasks. Successful performance in this role requires broad  knowledge of facility maintenance trades and technical principles, as well as a professional background and the ability to effectively collaborate  with other Midpen departments. Work Environment:  This position is part of the  Facilities & Fleet Department and will be required to work onsite Monday through Friday on a 9/80 schedule.  Work will be performed at Midpen’s administrative office in Los Altos, field facilities, and also at residential properties located primarily in the field. May be required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays, be called back after hours and on weekends or respond to and perform work in emergency situations as required.  When conducting field assignments, work may include traversing rough, difficult terrain in inclement or hot weather with exposure to poison oak, wildlife and rodent inhabitants.  Duties will include building and facility work that will require climbing ladders and entering confined spaces.  Ideal candidates will be comfortable working in these types of conditions, as well as in an office environment. Positions in this classification must possess the ability to lift and carry materials and objects weighing up to 60 pounds and must possess the ability to push and pull objects weighing up to 100 pounds, with the use of proper equipment. Are you ready for the next step in your career? An opportunity is now open for the City of Newark's Equipment Mechanic I/II position.

The City of Newark is seeking a knowledgeable Equipment Mechanic I/II with hands-on automotive experience to join our Public Works Maintenance Division. This position is responsible for maintaining and repairing City vehicles and equipment; ability to repair gasoline, diesel powered, or alternative fuel powered automotives; organization and log of tasks done and perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

• Perform routine maintenance on vehicles and equipment, including oil changes, lubrication, tune-ups, minor repairs, and limited fabrication or welding.
• Inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical and electrical components, including tires, batteries, cooling systems, and related parts.
• Clean and detail vehicles; transport vehicles and supplies; maintain an organized shop and accurate service records using computer systems.
• Provide quality customer service and maintain positive working relationships with staff and the public.

In addition to the duties above, the Equipment Mechanic II:

• Perform repairs and adjustments to vehicles including fleet automobiles and police patrol vehicles, light and heavy trucks including emergency vehicles, heavy construction equipment and various related gasoline, diesel and alternate fuel engines, electrical components, braking systems, transmissions, and steering systems and other mechanisms.
• Make repairs to a variety of power tools and equipment, including compressors, blowers, chain saws and mowers.
• Work with contractors on repair assignments; may inspect contracted work to ensure that specifications and contract requirements are met.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

• Equipment Mechanic I
  • Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent, and six (6) months of general automotive or equipment maintenance and repair experience. 
  • Six (6) months of of general automotive or equipment maintenance and repair experience.
     
• Equipment Mechanic II
  • Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent, supplemented with specialized training in automotive and heavy construction equipment maintenance and repair, or a related field. 
  • Two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience performing automotive and general equipment maintenance work similar to that of an Equipment Mechanic I with the City of Newark. 

License and Certification

• Equipment Mechanic I
  • Possession of a valid driver license and a satisfactory driving record throughout employment.
     
• Equipment Mechanic II
  • Possession of a valid California Class A driver's license (with tank endorsement when applicable) within one year of appointment.  Positions performing safety sensitive functions are subject to the Federal Highway Administration Department of Transportation (D.O.T.) regulations and the City's Administrative Regulation concerning drug and alcohol testing as a continuing condition of employment with the City.
  • Possession of a valid California M1 (motorcycle operator’s license) within one year of appointment. 
  • Possession of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications are desirable.

Under general supervision, the Neighborhood Preservation Inspector ensures compliance with applicable sections of the State, Federal, and Municipal Codes, ordinances, and in relevant areas, such as property maintenance, abandoned vehicles, planning, zoning, signs, community nuisance, and related areas.  This is a classification in the Economic and Community Development Department.

CLASS CHARACTERISITICS:

The Neighborhood Preservation Inspector is the full journey-level classification.  This position requires experience in both Municipal and Zoning Codes and Regulations. Employees at this level are expected to work with property owners independently and to coordinate City resources to solve neighborhood issues.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (illustrative only):

• Work closely with homeowners and businesses to achieve compliance.
• Interpret ordinances, policies and procedures, and code enforcement concepts.
• Prepare reports and recommendations on code enforcement matters, and gain voluntary compliance.

• Prepare case information and present evidence at appeal hearings and other legal proceedings.

About the Position: Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District (Midpen) is seeking two Engineering & Construction (E&C) Interns in the Engineering & Construction Department. Under close guidance of seasoned project management staff (including licensed engineers and landscape architects), the E&C Interns will support professional level design and construction project management activities, including the design and implementation of capital improvement and natural resource preservation and protection projects; coordinate project related assignments with other Midpen staff, outside consultants, contractors and regulatory agencies; assist with bidding process and construction efforts; and perform related work as required.  The expected start dates for internships are in May or June 2026.  

Basic Requirements: Current enrollment or a recent graduate (within the last 12 months) in an associate’s, bachelor’s, or master’s degree program, or trade school in a relevant field. Successful candidates will have a background in civil or structural engineering, construction management, landscape architecture, or a related field, experience with Microsoft Office suite and AutoCAD; and demonstrated expertise/enthusiasm in project management, construction management, and environmental conservation. This position requires great attention to detail, excellent communication skills, the ability to work well both in team settings and independently, and the willingness to occasionally work in rugged, remote settings.  Knowledge of construction management, landscape design, cost estimating, permitting, utilities, Adobe Creative Suite and Sketchup is a plus. Possession of a valid California driver’s license is required.

Working Conditions/Schedule: This position will be divided between on-site work, remote office work, and field visits for construction field observations and coordination. Interns will be expected to be in the field anywhere between 3 to 5 days per week.  They will be able to work from home up to 2 days.  Personal protective equipment (hardhat, eye protection, and boots) will be required at construction sites. This position will operate in the E&C Department at Midpen offices in Los Altos, California. Fieldwork is conducted in rural or mountainous Midpen open space areas, which may involve working alone in wild land areas and traversing rough, difficult terrain sometimes with poison oak and dense vegetation. Work may take place during inclement weather conditions. Field work will require driving in remote areas on dirt roads, working in temperatures ranging from cold and blustery to hot and dry. Ideal candidates will be comfortable working in these types of field conditions, as well as in an office environment. Hours of work are flexible and can be designed around academic schedule requirements. This is a temporary position working 20 – 40 hours per week, and will extend up to a total of 950 hours over a 3-9 month period. This is a non-benefited position.
