About the Department

The Department of Public Works is responsible for delivering capital improvement projects for a wide variety of City facilities and infrastructure, maintaining City facilities and fleet assets, facilitating and regulating development activities, and providing animal care and services. Position Duties

Salary range for this classification is $162,795.36 - $198,307.20 annually. This range includes an approximate five percent(5%) ongoing non-pensionable pay. Actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates’ qualifications and experience.

Additionally, Animal Shelter Veterinarians (Full Time) are eligible for a hiring incentive that shall provide a one-time, non-pensionable payment of $20,000 upon hire. The one-time, non-pensionable lump sum Hiring Incentive shall be paid asfollows:

Upon Hire: $5,000
Upon 6-Months Worked: $7,500
Upon 12-Months Worked: $7,500
 
The City of San Jose, Animal Care and Services Division is seeking Veterinarians to work at the Animal Care Center, including one full-time in either/or, shelter medicine and/or the shelter’s public high quality, high volume spay/neuter clinic. The Animal Shelter Veterinarian may perform all aspects of shelter medicine in a large animal shelter. Duties may include routine spay/neuter surgeries on cats, dogs, and other animals as indicated. This position provides direct care and treatment of homeless animals entering the City of San Jose’s Animal Care Center.
 
In addition, this position is required to diagnose, treat, and/or recommend euthanasia. Registered Veterinary Technicians will be assigned to assist this position with the preparation and post-surgery processes of spay/neuter and other surgical procedures. This is a position reporting to the Shelter Manager of Animal Care and Services. This classification is represented by City Association of Management Personnel (CAMP).

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

•  Directs, coordinates and performs the screening, diagnosis, and basic and emergency medical treatment of animals in the shelter.
•  Performs or supervises the visual monitoring of impounded animals, including those that may be isolated or quarantined for signs of illness or unusual behavior.
•  Performs surgical procedures, including spay/neuters and vaccinates animals to prevent diseases. 
•  Maintains accurate medical records of animals.
•  Effectively communicates the condition and status of animals with staff, public and animal groups. 
•  Advises staff on matters within the veterinary field.
•  Orders, maintains and controls the drugs used at the shelter and in the field.
• Trains appropriate staff in administering first aide and vaccinations to animals, the performance of euthanasia and other paramedical duties.
• Performs and directs staff to perform euthanasia of animals that are irremediably suffering from serious illness or severe injury, as necessary
• Ensures that shelter staff participates in a comprehensive disease prevention program for the animal shelter. 
• Participates in special spay/neuter or vaccination clinics.
• Supervises staff to include: prioritizing and assigning work; providing technical guidance to staff; ensuring staff are trained; and making hiring, termination and disciplinary recommendations.
• Ensures compliance of activities to codes and all legal regulations.

Physical Requirements:
Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects up to 50 pounds while handling animals and equipment. Employees may be exposed to cold and hot temperatures, loud noises, odors, dust, air contaminants, blood borne pathogens while using hypodermic needles on animals and may be exposed to animal scratches and bites.

San Mateo County Health's Public Health Policy & Planning (PHPP) Division has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Veterinarian to work in Animal Control and Licensing as a member of the team.
 
The current vacancy is extra help part time 20-hours per week in the Public Health, Policy and Planning Division. The position is stationed in San Mateo, CA, but will travel/drive throughout the County to perform duties of the position.
 
Scheduling is flexible. Daily reporting hours and days of the week may vary according to the needs of the department. Evening and weekend work may be required based on the needs of the organization. This position is a hybrid of remote work as well as field-based at clinics.
 
The Veterinary Wellness Program provides veterinary services to the pets of the unhoused, those in transitional housing, and very low-income San Mateo County residents who are receiving services from San Mateo County. This position works with San Mateo County Health and cross collaborates with other programs within the County. Technical expertise, as well as knowledge of veterinary public health practices, are preferred.
 
San Mateo County is unique in that most of our homeless shelters allow residents to bring their pets with them, not just an emotional support or service animal. One of the barriers for homeless people to get into a shelter with their pets is that their pet must be current on their vaccinations. Within 10 days of a new resident moving into a shelter with a pet, the County veterinarian will meet with the owner and their pet to provide a general exam, the necessary vaccinations and flea control. This position will visit various sites throughout the County on a regular basis, providing vaccines, flea control, antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and general exams. In addition, the Veterinarian will travel to various homeless encampments to provide these services and to offer and encourage spaying and neutering of the pets.
 
When pets need additional care, this position will coordinate with local veterinary clinics we contract with for services. These contracts allow us to provide spay and neuter services, dental services, and many other procedures that the pet owner would not otherwise be able to afford. These vital veterinary services keep pets from being relinquished to animal shelters and provides peace of mind for the pet owner. In addition, our veterinary program partners with our Street Medicine Program to provide health care services to the pet owners, which advances San Mateo County’s One Health Concept.
 
This Veterinarian position will be providing technical/subject matter expertise on issues relating to the spread of zoonotic, epizootic, and exotic diseases, as well as consulting on cases of rabies in domestic and wild animals. The position will also act as a liaison between the veterinary community, Veterinary Public Health, California Department of Public Health, and residents of the County.
 
Duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Provide lead direction to staff responsible for following prescribed treatment and maintaining treatment records for animals treated.
• Ensure that the highest level of service and care are provided and that changes in animals’ conditions are recorded and properly addressed.
• Examine and evaluate animals, and perform veterinary medical treatments, including vaccinations and preventative treatment as appropriate. 
• Coordinate with local veterinarians and clinic/shelter professionals to arrange spay and neuter surgeries and medical procedures.
• Arrange for care at a contracted veterinary hospital for severely injured, sick or diseased animals and provides full orders for care.
• Establishes and maintains medical records and drug use logs to standards of veterinary practices.
• Ensure that records are in order and complete and prepare written reports as needed; ensures that all State and Federal laws, regulations, accepted standards, are adhered to. 
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of shelter animal health protocols, surgical procedures, and companion animal health issues.
• Build and maintain effective relationships with the staff, community, local veterinarians, State Veterinarian. 
• Assist in the monitoring of inventory and ordering of medical supplies and pharmaceuticals.
• Serve as technical/subject matter expert to answer questions from the County Health Officer, medical community and the general public regarding issues related to/involving animals—including but not limited to researching, recommending, implementing and/or maintaining measures to prevent the spread of zoonotic diseases, epizootic diseases, exotic diseases and disease outbreaks. 
• Serve as a consultant in suspect cases of rabies in domestic and wild animals as well as complex issues deriving from animal bites.
• Review pertinent legislation, regulations, and policies to provide recommendations, especially with regards to vaccination of domestic animals, rabies vaccine exemptions, quarantine/euthanasia of animals exposed to rabies.
• Disseminate relevant information to the local veterinary community as well as to residents of the county. 
• Assist with emergencies and disaster services.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

 
Ideal candidate will possess:
•       Experience working one – two years as a Veterinarian.

• Experience in diagnosing and treating disease, illness, and injuries of dogs, cats, rabbits, and other animals. 
• Ability to test animals for disease and administer vaccines.
• Ability to evaluate condition and coordinate maintenance of equipment and supplies.
• Ability to help ensure the safe storage, access, and use of medications.
• Ability to develop and provide guidance on sanitary protocols, feeding, preventative medicine, and general care to promote the health of all animals.
• Ability to research and prepare medical reports for guidance of management upon request.
• Ability to write grant proposals for funding.
• Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of staff and residents of the community.
• Attend meetings and other meetings as requested or required.
• Obtain continuing education as required and be committed to staying up-to-date technically with industry best practices and applying learned knowledge.
• Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with partner and contract providers.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

This is an extra-help, at-will assignment, paid on an hourly basis. Extra-help hours are dependent on the business needs of the department and therefore work hours may vary from week to week. Extra help employees shall not exceed 1,040 hours of work per fiscal year. Some extra help positions are eligible for benefits under the Affordable Care Act. Extra help employees are not guaranteed permanent status at the end of the assignment.

Licensure/Certification:

• Veterinarian license to practice in the State of California
• California class C driver license or equivalent. Must possess and maintain a good driving record.

Position Duties  

The Department of Public Works (DPW) is currently seeking to fill one (1) Principal Engineer/Architect position in the City Facilities and Architectural Services (CFAS) Division. This is a temporary (Overstrength) position that is anticipated to be funded through June 30, 2025, subject to further extension as appropriate. The Principal Engineer/Architect will support the Library Department (LD) in leading the coordination for the Library Facilities and Customer Experience Planning. This individual will play a key leadership role in driving critical infrastructure initiatives, including supporting the implementation of the California State Library Building Forward Infrastructure Grant projects and managing capital and facilities planning processes in collaboration with the LD and consultants. This individual will act as a leader, ensuring timely and effective project execution, and delivering results that meet organizational and state funding objectives.  

Reporting to the Deputy Director, the Principal Engineer/Architect will require the ability to extensively collaborate across the LD, the DPW, Planning, Building and Code Enforcement (PBCE) and other contractors/vendors, while maintaining adherence to budgets, timelines, and plans. Outstanding leadership, a high degree of accountability, and the ability to establish an excellent working relationship with all stakeholders are required to be successful in this position.  

Key Responsibilities 

• Lead the design and construction of major public works projects, in partnership with the Library Department.  

• Lead a multi-disciplinary team of engineers, architects, technicians, and inspectors to deliver high-quality, cost-effective, and consistent services. 

• Oversee engineering/architectural or other technical research; review, analyze, and prepare recommendations to Senior and Executive staff regarding project and/or program scope or objectives. 

• Direct and coordinate the preparation of cost estimates and project and/or program budgets; monitor budgets and schedules for performance. 

• Consult with Senior and Executive staff, contractors, other departments, and consultants to plan, design, and construct major engineering/architectural and/or other technical projects. 

• Direct and coordinate the creation, planning, and management of capital budgets and staffing plans to successfully deliver capital projects. 

• Oversee the planning and execution of the procurements of design consultants and construction contracts. 

• Partner with the department’s other executive staff to lead transformation, training, and other process improvement efforts in the City’s capital improvement program. 

• Prepare technical reports and correspondence as required.

About the Position:  The Planning Department is seeking TWO interns who are interested in learning about open space conservation and planning for ecologically sensitive recreation. Their responsibilities may include researching and compiling project information, supporting community and stakeholder engagement, assisting with environmental review and documentation, researching new programs and initiatives, conducting field surveys and data collection, and using computer-based systems such as GIS, Microsoft Excel and Adobe Illustrator for analysis of data and preparation of documents related to Midpen lands and facilities. The interns will work as a team and individually on assignments, including opportunities for field work to gain experience in data collection techniques and tools and on-the-job training in project management, planning research, analysis, and written communication.  For additional information about the position, see the Job Description on our website. Basic Requirements: Current enrollment in an associate’s, bachelor’s, or master’s degree program, or trade school in a relevant field or a recent graduate (within the last 12 months). Successful candidates will have a background in the natural sciences, park/open space management, land use/environmental planning, GIS/geography, biology, ecology, or another related field and experience with field data collection techniques. This internship requires strong organizational and analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently and with a team. Experience with Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel, ArcGIS software, GPS equipment, Microsoft Excel, and Apple iPads is desired, and familiarity with Midpen preserves/trails as well as local flora, fauna, and natural history are a plus.   Possession of or ability to obtain a valid California driver’s license is required. Must possess the ability to lift, carry, push and pull materials and objects weighing up to 25 pounds.

Working Conditions:  This position will report to the Planning Department at the Administrative Office in Los Altos, California.  Midpen offers a hybrid office/telecommute work environment for this position, which will be divided between onsite work, field visits, and limited home office work.  The selected individuals will be required to work a minimum of three days on-site per week, and assignments may vary between field and office work. Field work is conducted in rural or mountainous Midpen open space areas, which may involve working alone or with another intern in wildland areas, traversing rough difficult terrain sometimes with poison oak and dense vegetation, and carrying equipment weighing up to 25 pounds. This is a temporary position working 20 – 40 hours per week (within regular business days/hours). Regular business is conducted Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00am to 5:00pm. Interns may work up to a total of 950 hours over a 6-to-9-month period. This is a non-benefited position.

The City of San José , Public Works Department is seeking to fill five ( 5 ) full- time Electrician vacancies . The department's tight-kn i t team of E lectrician s work collabo ra tively and intra-departmentally to ensure electrical components and systems are installed and m aintained throughout city facilities such as community centers, l ibraries and public park s.

Electrician I is the entry-level class in the Electrician series. Incumbents are provided with training and experience to develop the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the full range of installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems and equipment.

Electrician II is the journey level class in the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical systems and equipment, working independently under general supervision.

Electricians are responsible for installing, maintaining , testing, troubleshooting, repairing, and operating high and low voltage/amperage electrical components, systems and equipment including locating problems; determining appropriate courses of action; and coordinating repairs with affected parties. They design, fabricate, and install electrical systems and components and install wiring and electrical equipment, ensuring code compliance. Electricians review work orders, maintain activity logs, prepare requisitions and obtain approval for various projects. Duties may also include purchasing electrical supplies, including filling out paperwork; coordinating purchases; and, choosing vendors. They are responsible for responding to occasional emergencies, evaluating and taking required actions and determining if support is needed. Public Works electrician duties also include:

 

• N ew construction, remodels, small tenant improvement projects ;
• L ighting retrofit projects ;
• M aintenance of pump stations (includes motor controls and PLC's and computerized alarm and monitoring of pumps, etc. ) ;
• Maintenance of E mergency generators, fire alarm systems, vehicle gate operators, badge access controls, lighting control systems ;
• E lectrical building distribution systems and equipment up to and including 12kv ;
• I nstalling cat 5 and fiber optic networks and maintenance of all City buildings ; and
• Setting up t emporary power for special events and public address setups.

 

 

Position Summary

Under general supervision of the Director of Planning and Principal Planners, manages projects and performs work tasks to support the department’s work program, which includes service and operations planning, short- and long-range planning, facilities planning, and compliance reporting for all three of the District’s operating divisions.

 

This position advances the District’s business interests by analyzing complex operating conditions and recommending detailed changes, producing reports and planning studies, researching and interpreting relevant regulations, and meeting with internal staff and external stakeholders on a wide variety of topics. Work may require the use of specialized software, such as GIS and Hastus, and travel to District facilities and off-site meeting locations. May supervise and assign work to Associate Planner(s) and Planner(s) as directed.

 

Essential Responsibilities

• Research, compile, analyze, and interpret complex technical, demographic, economic, financial, and other statistical data for the development of transit plans and projects, such as the District's transit service plan, transit capital improvement program, and proposed bridge toll or transit fare changes.
• Monitor, forecast, and evaluate transit service performance and patterns of bridge traffic, parking, and transit service patronage and recommend changes where necessary.
• Prepare or supervise preparation of routine evaluations of the efficiency and effectiveness of bus and ferry routes, schedules, major transit facilities, and bus stops. Recommend specific improvements based on these evaluations.
• Prepare or oversee preparation of major compliance documents, including the Short-Range Transit Plan (SRTP), National Transit Database (NTD), Title VI, and other federal and state reports, including the organization of internal stakeholder meetings to provide input on these reports.
• Prepare official recommendations and informational reports for consideration by the public, the District’s Board of Directors, and technical staff of the District or other agencies and groups.
• Prepare or assist with verbal presentations to staff groups, public groups, and the boards of local municipalities and advise District personnel on matters related to interactions with these groups.
• Support and coordinate staff responsibilities regarding other internal and external coordination meetings as directed. May participate in public meetings and hearings.
• Act, when directed, as liaison between the District and other agencies on planning matters by reviewing outside reports, attending meetings, drafting correspondence, and providing technical information to public agencies and other transit groups.
• Develop and coordinate changes to the District’s routes and fares in the Clipper and Genfare systems.
• Provide staff support to the District’s public advisory committees, including attendance at off-site meetings and/or meetings that occur outside normal business hours.
• Formulate short- and long-range plans or recommendations on transit services; coordinate service planning, detour, and bus stop issues with local jurisdictions when needed.
• Study and research physical characteristics of areas served by Golden Gate Transit; assess conditions of roads and related features; determine the physical and operational feasibility of transit routes and bus stops.
• Assess feasibility of transit service changes and develop plans for implementation. May use Hastus scheduling software as appropriate.
• Analyze possible environmental impacts that could result from proposed service, operations, or pricing changes to the District’s transit or bridge operations.
• Obtain encroachment or other permits as necessary to address the District’s business needs.
• Perform bridge traffic or transit demand projections and studies based on available travel data, community surveys, U.S. census data, and development reports from cities served by the District.
• Conduct geographical and demographic analyses of existing and potential District customers using socioeconomic data from passenger or other market research surveys. May use geographic information system (GIS) software as appropriate.
• Develop, coordinate, and conduct bus and ferry passenger surveys; analyze data from those surveys and prepare related reports.
• Review environmental impact reports and statements and project plans within the Golden Gate Transit service area and assess potential impacts to the District’s operations.
• Support environmental reviews related to the District’s transit projects.
• Research and interpret applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations relating to transportation, planning, or environmental permit activities.
• May supervise and assign work to Associate Planner(s) and Planner(s) as directed.
• Perform other related duties as required or assigned.
• Know and follow health and safety rules and safe working practices applicable to the position.

The Santa Clara City Library is a department of the City of Santa Clara. The Santa Clara City Library operates three facilities, a virtual branch through a website, and a bookmobile. The Library provides a collection of virtual and physical books and resources, services and programs, public internet access, adult literacy and English as Second Language classes for the Santa Clara community. Services and programs are free and open to all.

The Position:

The Santa Clara City Library is seeking an enthusiastic and community-oriented Librarian with a strong public service commitment at the Mission Branch Library. This Librarian will provide library service, information, and programming for all ages, and may be responsible of the branch in-lieu of more senior staff. Constant contact and collaboration with patrons of all ages, including those with diverse backgrounds and abilities, are part of the daily duties of this position.  

This is a limited-term appointment of 30-40 hours/week for up to 6 months. As an as-needed employee, this is an "at-will" position and there is no guarantee of hours. Hours are limited to 999 in a fiscal year or 960 hours in a fiscal year for retired CalPERS annuitants.

Position Duties

This position requires flexible availability. Shifts may include morning, afternoon, to evening availability Monday – Sunday. Shift rotations may be required and will be based on the needs of the department. 

Under the direction of the Security Services Supervisor, this position is responsible for performing work focused around supporting safety and delivering de-escalatory security services at any of the 24 SJPL library branches. This position has the unique opportunity to establish and build community trust and safety. The Senior Security Officer will perform duties related to enforcing SJPL Behavior Policy, monitoring and responding to security related incidents at library branches, be proactive in mitigating/deterring criminal activity and damage, performing accurate incident reporting, as well as providing security coaching and training to staff. The Security Officer will monitor inside the library building, as well as the outside perimeter of library building and library parking lot. 

 

Duties include, but are not limited to:

• Interact with a diverse population of library customers and employees to preserve a safe and inviting community environment; provide customer service to library customers. 

• Patrol multiple library branch locations, including building interior and exterior, to identify and deter illegal activities, report suspicious behavior or dangerous situations, while promoting a positive visual presence.

• Address and deescalate library security incidents in alignment with the library’s Behavior Policy and enforcement of violation guidelines. 

• Ensure a courteous and professional demeanor when dealing with difficult library customers and demonstrate excellent customer service to both customers and all levels of library staff. 

• Determine, using sound judgement, the best means of addressing security situations, including informing customers about library policies, reporting incidents appropriately to local law enforcement, producing accurate documentation/reporting, warning customers of rule infractions or violations, assisting staff with escorting people out, and serving suspension paperwork.

• Investigate and document potentially hazardous conditions and communicate with library facilities, executive management, Police, Fire, and other agencies as appropriate; liaise with the partner University Police Department and San Jose Police Department, as needed.

• Write incident reports of library conduct policy violations, activities, and irregularities, such as equipment or property damage, theft, presence of unauthorized persons, or unusual occurrences. Maintain security-related records and information.

• Draft library customer suspensions requests and serve suspension paperwork; gather and present data related to incidents.

• Evaluate and recommend revision of security and emergency procedures and policies.

• Interpret, implement, and relay legal statutes, laws, departmental policies, procedures, and regulations.

• Provide security-related trainings to library staff.

• May provide training to contract security officers, monitor effectiveness, and evaluate performance/process improvements; ensure current training of all security personnel is complete.

• Respond to emergencies at any of the branch libraries; ensure accurate reporting and follow up with library executive management; Respond to medical emergencies and may provide first aid or CPR.

• Current CPR and American Red Cross Standard First Aid certification desired but not required time of hire. Training can be provided.

• Bilingual skills preferred.

 

The salary range for Senior Security Officer is approximately $76,789.44 - $93,300.48 annually. This amount includes an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable pay. Actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates’ qualifications and experience.

 

The successful candidate will possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, the ability to interpret, implement and relay policies, procedures, laws, regulations with the public and partner departments, and possess the ability to mitigate and deescalate conflict.
