This is a full-time, 40 hours per week position working Monday, Tuesday, Thursday 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Wednesday 8:00 AM to 7:30 PM, and Friday 8:00 AM to 1:30 PM with occasional evening and weekend hours.

The Department

DEFINITION

Under immediate and general supervision, classes in this three level series provide a wide variety of responsible and complex administrative, secretarial and clerical duties for an assigned department and department head, to coordinate and participate in office functions in support of the department's goals and objectives; to provide information and assistance to employees and the public regarding departmental policies and procedures.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The emphasis of the Administrative Assistant series is on the accomplishment of general clerical and administrative support duties.

Administrative Assistant I

This is the entry level in the series. Employees perform routine duties under immediate supervision.

Administrative Assistant II

The is the journey level in the series. Employees perform both routine and more complex duties under general supervision.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Immediate supervision is provided to the Administrative Assistant I. General supervision provided to the Administrative II and III is provided by the department head of designee. The Administrative Assistant III may lead or supervise assigned staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE

FOLLOWING:

• Maintains a system of files and records.
• Composes correspondence and prepares reports independently or from oral instructions.
• Makes appointments and meets callers.
• Operates various office machines and equipment as required.

In addition, the Administrative Assistant II performs the following duties:

• Plans, schedules and performs a wide variety of clerical and typing work related to the function to which assigned;

• Prepares documents based on data obtained from records and other sources and processes them in accordance with prescribed procedures.

ABOUT THE POSITION

Under the direction of the Custodial Services Supervisor, the Maintenance Custodian serves as the worker in the duties of care and cleaning of assigned buildings and related facilities.  The incumbent will be required to travel between several City buildings during their scheduled shift. Custodial services are provided seven days a week with shifts starting at 5pm and ending at 1:30am. Please note that schedules for this role could vary Monday-Sunday and will be determined prior to appointment.

Typical duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Sweep, vacuum, shampoo, and mop
• Dust fixtures and equipment up to twelve feet from floor.
• Wash windows and doors up to twelve feet from floor.

• Provide independent legal research to the judges and commissioners of the County of San Mateo Superior Court bench.

Detective Assignment

Experience:

• Some work experience as a California peace officer or other work experience that demonstrates a general aptitude for police work.

PATTERN II –LATERAL TRANSFER

• Successfully completed (at any time) a California POST certified basic law enforcement academy: AND
• Must be currently employed in a California law enforcement agency with at least one (1) year of full-time experience as a sworn peace officer with a California law enforcement agency, and be eligible for appointment as a Peace Officer under Section 830.1 PC; AND
• Must possess a basic POST certificate issued by California Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training or other documentation to substantiate your eligibility.

The San Mateo County Attorney's Office is seeking candidates for the 2026 Michael P. Murphy Public Law Fellowship.

In 2014, the County of San Mateo established a Fellowship position in honor of former San Mateo County Counsel Michael P. Murphy. Mr. Murphy served in the County Counsel’s office from 1982 to 2011, the last four years as County Counsel. Vacancies in Bay Area county counsel offices typically attract many qualified applicants and new attorneys are generally not considered for these positions. This Fellowship provides an opportunity for new attorneys to receive training and experience in advising and litigating on behalf of government agencies as they begin their legal careers.

Attorneys in the San Mateo County Attorney’s Office (previously known as the County Counsel’s Office) are generalists. We provide legal advice to County departments, school districts, and special districts; litigate civil cases in State and Federal courts and before administrative agencies; and manage calendar assignments in Dependency, Probate, Lanterman Petris Short Act, and other specialized areas of law. Fellows are given the opportunity to experience a wide range of public sector work, in litigation, public policy, and advice roles. The goal is to provide each Fellow a year in the life of a Deputy County Attorney.

Collections System Manager

The Organization

The City of Pacifica is a general law city and operates under the Council/Manager Form of Government. Legislative authority is vested in a five member City Council elected at large, one of which is appointed Mayor by the Council. The Department

The Public Works Department is responsible for maintaining and repairing the City’s infrastructure and wastewater treatment operations in an efficient and cost-effective manner while providing a high level of customer service and a safe work environment for city employees. The Department maintains parks, playing fields and medians and keeps streets and trails clean and well-maintained. The Department also coordinates the tree program, cleans beaches and coordinates the City Beautification program. 

The Public Works Department is organized into three divisions including Wastewater Treatment Operations, Field Services and Engineering. The Wastewater Treatment Operations includes the operation of the wastewater treatment and water recycling treatment plant and management of the collection system. Field Services oversees the maintenance of city streets, parks, trees, vehicles and public facilities. The Engineering Division manages public infrastructure projects, transportation planning and maintenance and repair of the City’s infrastructure. The Public Works Department is supported by 56 full-time staff with 29 in the Wastewater Division. The Wastewater Division has an annual operating budget of $14 million along with a FY2022-23 CIP appropriation of $ 10.1 million.

The Community

Over half of the land in this small city is protected open space with numerous city, county and state parks. More than one thousand acres belong to the famed Golden Gate National Recreation Area. These bountiful parklands give Pacifica a spaciousness rarely found in suburban areas, yet it is only three miles from San Francisco’s southern border and less than 20 minutes to downtown. The natural world of beaches, headlands and hills provides a wide range of recreational opportunities. These include surfing, scuba, fishing, paragliding, hiking, birding, mountain biking, boating and horseback riding. Pacifica also offers golf, tennis, bowling, archery and loads of team sports. Several miles of coastal and ridgetop trails tie Pacifica to neighboring communities.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

• College level course work in chemistry, engineering or related field. Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in Civil Engineering, Chemistry, or related field is desirable.
• Five years of progressively responsible administrative and supervisory related experience in Wastewater Treatment at a public agency. Extensive experience in operations and maintenance of pump/lift stations highly desirable.

Licenses Required:

Must possess a valid California Class C driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record. Possession of a current Grade IV Wastewater Collections System Maintenance Certificate as issued by the California Water Environment Association is required.

This is a journey-level class in the Police Records Specialist classification series responsible for maintaining information in specialized departmental databases, preparing and assembling reports, processing payments, and preparing and processing subpoenas, requests for information, and other documents. All activities are performed within specified legal guidelines. Incumbents are expected to work independently and exercise judgment and initiative. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.
