Hiring Process

Step 1: Apply! A copy of your Lifeguard certification or proof of course enrollment is required with your application.

Step 2: Register for Summer Lifeguard Tryouts at: https://bit.ly/aquahire

Tryout Requirements:

• 300-yard continuous swim (freestyle)
• 50-yard Breaststroke
• 50-yard Back Stroke
• 2-minute tread with hands in the armpit
• 10lbs brick retrieval from 10-13ft of water
• 5 enter and exits from the side of the pool (no ladder)

Interviews will be conducted immediately following the successful completion of your tryout.

Step 3: All new employees must attend the Lifeguard Orientation Training on Saturday, June 7
 

Position Qualifications

Lifeguard ($17.00-$19.13)  Lifeguard

• You must be at least 16 years of age by your start date
• American Red Cross Deep Water Lifeguard Certification.

Lifeguard II ($17.62-$19.83)  Lifeguard II

• You must be at least 16 years of age by your start date
• American Red Cross Deep Water Lifeguard Certification
• American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification
• A minimum of 140 hours of Lifeguarding experience

Senior Lifeguard ($18.25-$20.55)  Senior Lifeguard

• You must be at least 18 years of age by your start date
• American Red Cross Deep Water Lifeguard Certification
• American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification
• A minimum of 500 hours of Lifeguarding experience

Assistant Pool Manager ($18.92-$21.29)  Assistant Pool Manager

• You must be at least 18 years of age by your start date
• American Red Cross Deep Water Lifeguard Certification
• American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification
• A minimum of 1000 hours of Lifeguarding experience

Successful candidates must pass Department of Justice fingerprint and
Tuberculosis (TB) screening clearances prior to the start of employment.  

The position of Firefighter/Paramedic, under direction, respond to fires, emergency medical incidents, rescue problems, hazardous materials spills and other emergencies to protect life and property; perform assigned service and maintenance of apparatus, equipment and stations; perform fire prevention, public education and public relations duties; perform community services and other duties that fall within the guidelines of the mission and goals of the department.

Minimum Requirements:

• Minimum age of 18 years at the time of appointment.
• High school diploma or GED.
• Provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
• Possession of a valid California driver’s license; ability to attain any specialized license to drive departmental apparatus within 6 months of request by the Fire Chief; ability to maintain required driver’s license requirements as established by the Fire Chief and pass an “insurability” check by the District’s insurance carrier.
• Copy of current Driving Record issued by CA DMV- available online.
• Ability to meet and maintain standards of physical conditions as prescribed in NFPA 1582-1992.
• Upon completion of probation period, possession of Hazardous Materials First Responder (Operations) and ICS 200 Certification, and State Driver/Operator 1A and 1B Certifications.
• By July 9, 2025, applicant must possess and maintain a current and valid State of California Paramedic License, and/or a current and valid NREMT-P Certification. 
• Possess and maintain a current and valid Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
• Possess and maintain a current and valid Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification.
• Passing score of the CPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test) completed between 3/21/2024 - 05/23/2025.  Visit the CPAT website for more information.
• Passing score of the written exam from FCTC, completed between 3/21/2024 - 05/23/2025.  Visit the FCTC website for more information.
   

OUT OF STATE APPLICANTS: You may apply with the agreement that if you are selected to be hired, you will obtain a California Driver's license before your first day of employment. On the application, upload a copy of your current State DL and DMV Driving Record. You are still required to take the CPAT and FCTC written exam.
 

Typical Duties:

• Responds to fire, medical, and other emergencies.
• Perform fire, rescue and hazardous materials evolutions and operate equipment necessary to deal with the emergency situation within the District standards and within the Firefighter 1 certification.
• Provide emergency medical treatment as a Paramedic.
• Perform fire prevention, pre-fire planning, public education, public relations efforts, and hydrant maintenance.
• Drives and operates all fire apparatus and, if qualified, the Districts’ aerial in a safe manner and with due regard for the welfare of the public and the District.
• Maintains familiarity of streets, topography, physical conditions, and other matters affecting response in the District.
• Maintains familiarity with the District policies, procedures, and programs.
• Maintains proficiency in basic firefighting and rescue techniques and participates in District training programs.
• Perform routine apparatus, equipment and station maintenance and cleaning.

Summer Day Camps

Looking for individuals who are passionate about making a difference and having fun outdoors! If entering your senior year of high school, are in college or beyond, this could be a perfect fit. Our five all-day summer camps run from June 16 to August 15, with staff training beginning June 9. Serving children ages 4-12 at multiple locations, these positions serve as role models to youth campers throughout the Conejo Valley, leading arts and crafts, recreation games, swimming, hiking and more!

Locations throughout Thousand Oaks and Newbury Park

Weekdays 7:00 AM - 4:00 PM or 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM
