The City of Brisbane is currently recruiting for non-sworn Police Officer Trainee candidates. This is for individuals that have no prior law enforcement experience and have not received POST certified police academy training. Trainees are paid while attending a POST-certified Police Academy. Upon successful completion of the police academy and upon availability of a Police Officer position, trainees are eligible to be sworn in as a Police Officer and become eligible for salary and benefits as outlined in the Brisbane Police Officers Association Memorandum of Understanding.

Position Duties:

The Department is recruiting for part-time, unbenefited Lifeguard and Instructor Lifeguard positions in the Recreation Services Division (RS) for the Citywide Aquatics programming.

The Lifeguard classification is covered by the Minimum Wage Police and pay starts at $17.95 hourly.

The Instructor Lifeguard classification is covered by the Pay Floor Rate and pay starts at $29.45 hourly.

These positions may be required to work variable shifts between the hours of 6:00 AM – 8:00 PM, Monday – Saturday during the dates of June 16, 2025 - August 8, 2025. Additionally, a MANDATORY training for both Lifeguard and Instructor Lifeguard positions will take place starting the week of June 9, 2025 - June 13, 2025, from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM. These positions are part-time, unbenefited with a limit of less than 20 hours per week or less than 1,040 hours per year. There is no guarantee of hours or longevity. All programs adhere to Santa Clara County, Public Health guidelines to ensure the health and well-being of staff. Face coverings and Personal Protective Equipment are provided. Staff may assist with daily health screenings, cleaning, and sanitization in City programs following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines. 

Note: Candidates are not required to possess the Lifeguard Training certificate at the time of completing the application or to interview for the position. If selected for the position of Lifeguard, the Citywide Aquatics program will offer Lifeguard Training certification classes, if needed. If selected for the position of Instructor Lifeguard, the Citywide Aquatics program will be offering Lifeguard Training and American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor's (WSI) certification classes, if needed. The American Red Cross Lifeguard Training certification age requirement is at least 15 years old and the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification age requirement is at least 16 years old. 

If selected to move forward in the conditional offer process, the Lifeguard certification pre course swimming skills test that consists of the following:

• a 300-yard swim using front crawl or breaststroke.
• a 2-minute tread using legs only
• the ability to retrieve a 10-lb dive weight from 7 ft deep, to the surface and swim 20 yds with the weight, using legs only and exit the pool without using a ladder within 100 seconds. 

Lifeguard:  Lifeguards supervise the conduct of swimmers to maintain safety in the swimming pool. Lifeguards also enforce swimming pool rules and may participate in swim instruction programs; observe swimmers in swimming pools; provide warnings to those who violate the safety rules of the pool and expelling them, if necessary, because of willful disobedience of the rules; rescues swimmers who are in distress; and administers artificial respiration when necessary, according to the prescribed method. Lifeguards may also train and direct the work of lower-level workers as assigned and participate in pool maintenance. Possession of a current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training’s Authorization Certificate is REQUIRED for the position of Lifeguard. 

Instructor Lifeguard:  In addition to the duties identified for Lifeguards, Instructor Lifeguards also organize and conduct swimming instruction classes for beginners, intermediate, or advanced swimmers at a swimming pool. Duties will include teaching swimming to children, adult individuals, and groups. Instructor Lifeguards may officiate at competitive swim meets. Instructor Lifeguards must also be able to instruct in the techniques of swimming and lifesaving. Possession of a current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor’s Authorization Certificate (WSI) is REQUIRED for the position of Instructor Lifeguard.

THE POSITION

The City of San Mateo is seeking a Per Diem Human Resources Technician providing a wide variety of technical human resource work in a variety of program areas including benefit administration; recruitment and selection; compensation; human resources information systems database analysis and report writing, and to do related work as required. This position receives general supervision from the HR Director or Senior HR Analysts.

EXAMPLE DUTIES

• Prepare and maintain personnel records.
• Write, edit and prepare digital and print communications materials.
• Assist in the recruitment process by preparing and distributing job announcements, composing, and placing ads, composing and recording announcements for the job hotline, updating and monitoring recruitment information on the City’s web site, screening applications, and answering inquiries from applicants.
• Work with departments in coordinating examination schedules and locations; prepare necessary correspondence for the examinations; notify candidates; enlist the services of examination board members; assemble and mail packets to oral board members.
• Process, update, and maintain invoices and accounts payable.
• Gather and assemble data and prepare routine reports; maintain a variety of records and files.
• Screen calls and visitors, referring inquiries as appropriate, and respond to requests for information regarding general personnel matters.
• Use specialized technical equipment or computer programs.

THE POSITION: The Public Works Department at the City of San Mateo has an opportunity for up to three (3) interns who will assist on various municipal projects. Positions are considered for several fields of interest, including, but not limited to, the following examples:

• Capital Improvement Program (CIP) – Civil engineering majors with an interest in capital improvement projects, design of civil infrastructure, and construction delivery procedures. Assist with project standards, standard specifications and drawings, CAD drafting, plan review, construction cost estimates, data collection and analysis.
• Traffic Engineering – Civil engineering majors with an interest in parking, transportation, and traffic engineering. Assist with creating parking zone signage, mapping, program evaluations, document organization and filing, field data collection and analysis, traffic studies, and plan reviews.
• Clean Water Program (CWP) – Civil engineering majors with an interest in water resources, sanitary sewer rehabilitation, design, construction. Assist with project standards, standard specifications, plan review, construction cost estimates, data collection and analysis, and construction site visits.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• BA/BS Candidate or MA/MS Candidate in civil engineering or related field as described above is highly desirable
• Strong analytical, writing, research, and verbal skills; effective written and oral communication
• Valid California Driver’s License (Class C)

• Ability to learn new information quickly
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Project) and web-based resources

DUTIES:

The primary duties will depend on the intern’s assigned position and associated field of interest and may include the following:

• • Assisting engineering project managers with administrative or technical tasks
  • Drafting engineering plans/standards in AutoCAD
  • Creating map displays using Google Earth or GIS
  • Gathering, compiling, and presenting data for engineering and construction projects
  • Organizing and tracking inspection reports, testing results, invoices, and other construction documentation
  • Conducting field assessments of the condition of streets, drainage/collection systems, and other infrastructure
  • Investigating and proposing responses to questions or inquiries from residents
  • Assist in other areas such as procurement, communication, public outreach, and public surveys.

What You'll Do:

• Conduct cross-connection surveys and tests to identify potential cross-connections to the water system. 
• Monitor the provision of backflow prevention at user connections. 
• Provide technical supervision over maintenance staff performing backflow prevention assembly installation, repair, inspection, and testing.
• Inspect potable and recycled water systems to determine the existence of cross connections and recommend corrective actions as necessary.
• Test, install, repair, and maintain backflow prevention assemblies.
• Perform plan reviews to ensure proper water system connections.   Identify potential cross-connections and provide written comments.
• Maintain records of installations, locations, tests, and repairs of backflow prevention assemblies.

The Essentials:

Cross-Connection Control Specialist

• Two years of experience in water system maintenance, equivalent to the responsibilities of a Water Utility Worker in the City of Mountain View
• Equivalent to completion of the 12th grade supplemented by approved courses of instruction in the theory, laws, regulations, and techniques of backflow prevention and/or cross-connection control.
• Possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license.
• Possession of an AWWA Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester Certificate and a California Water Resources Control Board Water Distribution Operator Grade 1 Certificate.  
• Possession of an AWWA Cross-Connection Control Specialist Certificate within one year of appointment.  

Bonus Points:

• Experience administering a water system cross-connection inspection program is highly desirable.
• Completion of a recycled water site supervisor’s training class is highly desirable.
