The Newark Recreation and Community Services Department is seeking enthusiastic individuals who are passionate about working with the public and have a genuine interest in coaching and serving as positive role models in their community. This role involves teaching the fundamentals of various sports, as well as coaching, refereeing, and scorekeeping for both youth and adult sports programs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Coach and referee youth & adult sports programs to maintain standards of play and ensure the safety of all participants.

• Teach and explain the rules and regulations of basketball, volleyball, baseball, etc.

• Confer with other coaches/referees, players and facility managers in order to provide information, coordinate activities, and discuss problems.

• Score keep or referee games as assigned.

• Maintain the gymnasium area including equipment and facility.

Work Schedule: Since this is a summer-only position, it is expected that applicants can work Monday-Friday with limited vacation time (less than one week) during the below program dates: 

Ash Street Summer Program: Monday-Friday: June 22-July 24, 10:30am – 3:30pm, no camp on July 3 

Camp Newark: Monday-Friday: June 8– July 31, 7:30 am – 4:15 pm, morning and midday shifts available.

The position requires the ability to work independently while following direction from higher-level Recreation staff, as well as the ability to assist with training and mentoring team members. Camp Newark is seeking a confident, creative, and organized leader to serve as an Activity Coordinator for our dynamic summer camp program. This role is ideal for individuals who thrive in high-energy environments and are passionate about creating meaningful experiences for youth ages 6–11. 

The Activity Coordinator plays a key leadership role in planning and delivering engaging daily programming while supporting and supervising camp staff. This position requires strong communication, organization, and leadership skills, along with the ability to create a fun, structured, and safe camp environment. 

Key Responsibilities: 

• Create, schedule, and implement creative camp activities for youth ages 6–11, including arts and crafts, sports, games, and STEM-based enrichment.

FACILITY ATTENDANT LEAD (Illustrative purposes only)

• Greet patrons, and provide information on programs, rentals, schedules, rules, and policies.
• Organize, inventory, and maintain facility materials and equipment. 
• Open, close, and secure facilities, including locking gates and setting alarms.
• Set up and tear down tables, chairs, and equipment according to event/program requirements.
• Perform light upkeep and cleaning tasks to ensure facility safety and upkeep.
• Enforce policies, maintain discipline, and provide customer service to patrons. 
• Monitor and report facility issues and potential hazards.
• Assist with special events and activities as needed. 
• Respond to and resolve patron inquiries and complaints.
• Participate in safety training and emergency procedures. 
• Monitor facility rentals and provide customer service as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 
 

Education and Experience 
 

• Graduation from high school or GED equivalent. This provision may be waived if applicant is under the age of 18.
• Two years of customer service or service in the recreation industry experience preferred.

Skills and Abilities 
 

• Facility operations, customer service, basic event/program management, and safety practices.
• Ability to use custodial and operational equipment, communicate effectively, and work independently.

Special Requirements 
 

• Ability to obtain a current First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
• Ability to obtain a current California Food Handler Card.
• Ability to obtain a current Driver’s License and clean driving record is preferred.

SERVICE DESK LEAD (Illustrative purposes only)

• Greet patrons, answer and direct calls, and provide information on programs, rentals, schedules, rules, and policies. 
• Open/close the facility and monitor for safety, cleanliness, and proper use. 
• Check daily facility schedules and rental setup requirements.
• Use computer systems for data entry.
• Assist patrons with registration processing and POS transactions.
• Handle office tasks including mail distribution, shipments, and deliveries.
• Support office inventory management for supplies and equipment.
• Assist facility attendants and recreation programs as needed.
