Performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repair of streets, sidewalks, traffic control, curbs, gutters, signs and markings.  The purpose of this recruitment is to fill a vacancy in the Street Maintenance Division of the Public Works Department, as well as establish an eligibility list for future vacancies.  Initial position/assignment and salary of the selected candidate will be based on previous work experience and valid licenses/certificates. 

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The Ideal Candidate for this position will have prior experience in road maintenance, including work on sidewalks, driveways, roads, curbs, and gutters. While this experience is preferred, it is not required. The candidate must be able to follow directions accurately and demonstrate strong communication skills, both verbally and in writing. They should be punctual, maintain good attendance, and have a positive attitude. The ability to work independently with minimal supervision is essential, along with a willingness to learn new skills and take on additional responsibilities as needed. This position requires flexibility, including availability for overtime, weekend shifts, and holiday work when necessary. While a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is preferred, it is not mandatory at the time of hire.

Maintenance Worker I:

This is the entry level class in the Maintenance Worker series. The Maintenance Worker I may often perform many of the duties required of Maintenance Worker II but is not expected to have the depth of experience, skill level and certifications of the Maintenance Worker II. As a result, the Maintenance Worker I will have fewer opportunities to exercise independent discretion and judgment on matters related to work procedures and methods. This position is required to work any shift, weekends and holidays as needed.

Maintenance Worker II:

This is the journey level in the Maintenance Worker series. This class differs from Maintenance Worker I in that incumbents perform more complex maintenance duties including working independently, exercising judgment, and operating the full range of tools and mechanical equipment related to a specific assignment. The Maintenance Worker II may also be expected to assist in the oversight and training of less experienced personnel. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the Maintenance Worker I level, or by candidates with prior work experience elsewhere. This position is required to meet all Standby Program requirements, take standby duty, and to work any shift, weekends and holidays as needed.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

The following are typical illustrations of duties encompassed by the job class; this is not an all-inclusive or limiting list: 

• Assist other departments in addressing Right of Way (ROW) issues within the city, this may include homeless camps, illegal dumping and blight related issues
• Ensure that safe traffic control measures are deployed, and that proper safety precautions and safe work methods are followed
• Design, fabricate, and install traffic signs and markings, set up barricades, direct traffic, and remove traffic control devices as needed
• Assist the Signs and Markings Group with the installation of signs and road markings
• Operate a variety of light and moderately heavy construction and maintenance equipment including such pieces as a loader, dump truck, water truck, steel rollers, zipper, mastic machine, crack seal machine and rubber-tired tractor with all attachments to perform a variety of routine construction and maintenance operations. Operate forklift as assigned and trained.
• Ability to set, form, pour, and finish concrete is required to repair curbs, gutters, driveways, and sidewalks
• Keep and record accurate and up to date records on all assignments using city maintenance management software
• Promote and maintain safe working conditions and correct unsafe working conditions
• Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and upgrade a wide variety of streets and sidewalk equipment
• Prepare plans and specifications for the procurement of parts and supplies on assigned projects
• Perform other duties as assigned
• Regular, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position

THE POSITION
To perform a variety of tasks in the maintenance of City-owned buildings, equipment and facilities.

The purpose of this recruitment is to hire a Temporary / Part-Time position. Applicants who do not meet the minimum qualifications for the Facility Maintenance Worker I position may be considered for employment as an Intern. Temporary / Part-Time employees work no more than 130 hours per month AND 960 hours per fiscal year. Typical work schedule will be three 8-hour shifts per week, excluding weekends and evenings.

IDEAL CANDIDATE
This position will perform semi-skilled tasks in a variety of light construction and maintenance activities. The Ideal Candidate will be customer-friendly and be a solutions-oriented professional who is flexible in dealing with shifting priorities, have good time management skills, and possess the ability to work effectively in the absence of supervision.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Maintain and repair City buildings, equipment and facilities by performing a variety of semiskilled carpentry, plumbing,  painting, heating/air conditioning, mechanical repair and electrical work as necessary. Inspect City buildings to locate conditions indicating the need for repairs and maintenance; assist in establishing and implementing preventative maintenance programs. Operate and maintain a variety of heavy tools and equipment, including small power and hand tools. Work cooperatively with others. Regular and consistent attendance.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS
Remodel and repair a variety of building components such as counters, tables, desks, bookshelves, cabinets, partitions, walls, windows and doors; boilers, water pumps, exhaust fans, compressors, and other water and sewage system plumbing as required. Perform electrical work such as wiring and rewiring; replace switches, ballast and receptacles as required. Prepare simple activity and related reports; maintain inventory and work records as required. Requisition supplies and materials. Perform general janitorial duties as needed. DEFINITION

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Senior Treatment Plant Maintenance Worker is distinguished from Treatment Plant Maintenance Worker II in that the Senior Treatment Plant Maintenance Worker level provides lead direction, work coordination, and training to assigned staff and requires a higher level of certification.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Leads and performs tasks related to the maintenance and repair of pumps, motors, plumbing, electrical, and exercise and lubricate machinery within the plant; records and maintains accurate maintenance records in a daily logbook;

• Completes monthly work orders and enters information regarding maintenance tasks into the system; records SCADA; records hours on equipment and meters; makes entries into the end of the month report and prints work order summary;
• Generates new maintenance work orders for each month; prioritizes tasks to be performed on Water Pollution Control Plant equipment;
• Leads and performs cleanup of the plant, removing trash, washing down decks, and clearing leaves and branches from storm drains; cleans tools and makes sure equipment is in proper locations and power tools are in safe working condition;
• Changes oil and filters on various pumps and compressors in the plant; maintains safety inspections of fire extinguishers, eye wash stations, and ladders in the plant;
• Removes and replaces packing from various pumps in the plant; installs new rings of packing with new lantern rings if damaged; applies grease to the new set of packing for proper lubrication; removes corrosion or debris from packing gland before reinstalling;
• Evaluates pump performance and flow rate to determine if pump has excessive buildup of rags that is affecting its performance and efficiency; shuts down pumps to remove rags from impeller and clears any obstructions;
• Replaces damaged parts/fittings on leaking chemical feed pumps; makes alterations to existing supply tubing or fittings, replacing clamps or O-rings, or removing  debris caught in the check valves; inspects, tests, calibrates, adjusts, cleans, and paints equipment in the water pollution control  plant; and
• Performs related duties as assigned.

JOB-RELATED QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of: Principles, practices, and techniques of the installation, maintenance, and repair of water treatment plan systems; operation of various hand and power tools; proper procedures to safely perform maintenance on machinery and equipment in the plant;  principles and techniques of lead direction, work coordination, and training; maintenance for MP2 program; recording and updating repair history on water pollution control plant equipment; how to create new work orders and close out completed work orders; forklift operations and scissor lift; replacing, repairing, and installing piping, fittings, and valves on water pollution control equipment; data entry of important, vital information regarding maintenance repairs; performance and evaluation on future preventative maintenance in the WPCP MP2 program; proper protective equipment.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING GUIDELINES

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities. A typical way would be:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent (GED). Technical training in a water treatment plant system or related field is desirable. 

Experience: Four (4) year of full-time experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of pollution control plant and sewage pumping facilities with at least one (1) year of equivalent experience to a Treatment Plant Maintenance Worker II.

Licenses: Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license and a satisfactory driving record. CWEA Certification as a Grade II Mechanical Technologist. Grade II Electrical/Instrumentation Certificate issued by the California Water Environment Association. 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Respond to work at any hour of the day or night, within designated timeframe, as required during afterhours, weekend service, and/or emergency situations; carry communication equipment in order to respond after work hours.  Vision, hearing, and physical ability adequate to obtain and maintain a California Class B Driver’s License; speak clearly and understandably. Requires moderate and sometimes strenuous exertion including bending, stooping, crouching, crawling, climbing, lifting, twisting, digging, carrying, and/or handling material weighing up to one hundred (100) pounds.  Work in confined spaces and wear protective equipment. The Public Works Maintenance Superintendent (Streets) is a management-level role within the Maintenance Division of the Public Works Department. This position is responsible for overseeing the operation of construction and maintenance equipment, street and sidewalk repairs, street drainage system maintenance, and graffiti abatement.

Key duties for this role include:

• Overseeing the operation of construction and maintenance equipment.

• Managing street and sidewalk repairs.

• Maintaining street drainage systems.

• Leading graffiti abatement efforts.

This position also involves:

• Coordinating the functions needed to maintain streets and related infrastructure in a safe and reliable manner, ensuring accessibility for all users.

• Coordinating the equipment needs of the Streets Section.

• Managing activities including staff supervision, assisting with budget preparation and monitoring, and addressing the training and safety needs of the staff.

THE POSITION

The City is currently seeking General Maintenance Workers. This temporary position works with the City’s maintenance staff to perform: unskilled labor in the parks and landscape medians, street and sidewalk maintenance, street sign maintenance, and fleet building maintenance. Duties include, but are not limited to: raking, emptying trash cans and litter removal, irrigation repair, weeding, edging, street sign maintenance and graffiti removal. Under the direction of the Custodial Supervisor, the Casual Maintenance Custodian Assistant serves as the worker in the duties of care and cleaning of assigned buildings and related facilities.  The incumbent may be required to travel between several City buildings during their scheduled shift.  This recruitment is to fill a position that has been designated to cover a night shift from 5 p.m. to 1:30 a.m., including weekends.  This recruitment may also be used to fill similar casual positions throughout the City;  shifts and schedules may vary and may include daytime shifts as needed. 

This is a non-benefited casual position.  A casual employee may not work more than 1000 hours per fiscal year.
