The General Maintenance Worker plays a vital role in keeping our communities and centers clean, safe, and visually appealing. This position focuses on a specific set of tasks tailored to meet the needs of the Recreation & Community Services Department, differing from the broader responsibilities of a full General Maintenance Worker under the Public Works Department. The Recreation Coordinator or Recreation and Community Services Supervisor is the key point of contact for this position, providing general direction and/or supervision.

1. Field Preparation: Assist t with basic field preparation for baseball and softball, including tasks like dragging the infield play area, marking chalk lines, and other essential setup activities.
    
2. Groundskeeping: Support keeping the exterior areas of community centers clean and presentable by removing trash and maintaining general tidiness. Assist with watering and care of indoor plants within recreation centers as needed.
    
3. Facility Cleaning: Perform light janitorial duties, including cleaning restrooms, fitness centers, and lobbies.
    
4. Events & Equipment Support: Assist with event setup and teardown once events are completed. Maintain special event equipment, furniture and supplies and promptly report any damaged or broken items to a supervisor for replacement.

The Newark Recreation and Community Services Department is seeking enthusiastic individuals who are passionate about working with the public and have a genuine interest in coaching and serving as positive role models in their community. This role involves teaching the fundamentals of various sports, as well as coaching, refereeing, and scorekeeping for both youth and adult sports programs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Coach and referee youth & adult sports programs to maintain standards of play and ensure the safety of all participants.

• Teach and explain the rules and regulations of basketball, volleyball, baseball, etc.

• Confer with other coaches/referees, players and facility managers in order to provide information, coordinate activities, and discuss problems.

• Score keep or referee games as assigned.

• Maintain the gymnasium area including equipment and facility.

• Meet and deal tactfully and effectively with the public.

• Perform other job-related duties within the scope of this job classification as assigned.

Energetic, organized, and responsible individuals who enjoy working with school-age children are encouraged to apply. Recreation Leaders will assist in the implementation and planning of a wide variety of arts and crafts, sports, games, special events, and excursions. Candidates will work either for the Ash Street Summer program at Ash Street Park or Camp Newark at the Silliman Center.  Both positions require candidates to work in an outdoor environment.   

Work Schedule: Since this is a summer-only position, it is expected that applicants can work Monday-Friday with limited vacation time (less than one week) during the below program dates: 

Ash Street Summer Program: Monday-Friday: June 22-July 24, 10:30am – 3:30pm, no camp on July 3 

Camp Newark: Monday-Friday: June 8– July 31, 7:30 am – 4:15 pm, morning and midday shifts available. 

REQUIREMENTS:

• Must be at least 15 years of age  

• Prior experience working with school-age children is preferred but not required. 

• Must successfully pass a TB test before an appointment, which is at your own cost.  

• Required to submit to a City Fingerprint Background Investigation if over the age of 18.

Camp Newark is seeking a confident, creative, and organized leader to serve as an Activity Coordinator for our dynamic summer camp program. This role is ideal for individuals who thrive in high-energy environments and are passionate about creating meaningful experiences for youth ages 6–11. 

The Activity Coordinator plays a key leadership role in planning and delivering engaging daily programming while supporting and supervising camp staff. This position requires strong communication, organization, and leadership skills, along with the ability to create a fun, structured, and safe camp environment. 

Key Responsibilities: 

• Create, schedule, and implement creative camp activities for youth ages 6–11, including arts and crafts, sports, games, and STEM-based enrichment. 

• Lead, mentor, and evaluate camp counselors, including training and delegating responsibilities. 

• Coordinate daily camp schedules, special events, and field trips. 

• Maintain clear and professional communication with parents regarding camper experiences and program information. 

• Ensure a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment for all participants. 

• Support overall camp operations and assist with problem-solving as needed. 

This position requires working both indoors and outdoors in a fast-paced summer camp setting. 

WORK SCHEDULE 

Summer-only position (June – August) 

Monday–Friday 

30–35 hours per week 

Applicants should be available throughout the majority of the summer season, with limited vacation time (less than one week preferred).

ABOUT THE POSITION

The City of Redwood City Parks, Recreation & Community Services Department invites you to apply for the casual position of Building Attendant. This position requires weekday and weekend shifts and may include both daytime and evening hours. A person in this classification will work flexibly, up to 20 hours per week. Hours and locations will vary across multiple community centers, and Building Attendants will be required to open and/or close the facility as needed.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The City of Redwood City Parks, Recreation & Community Services Department is looking for enthusiastic people to work within our After School Sports and Mobile Recreation programs operated out of Red Morton Community Center. The hours of this position could be Monday through Friday, from 3:30pm-8:30pm during the school year, but nighttime and weekend hours will be mandatory depending on special events and program needs. During the spring and summer, duties will include, but are not limited to, serving as an assistant coach within our Junior Dribblers basketball program and assisting with mobile recreation activities at various parks and school sites. This position will work under the gym/field supervisor and report directly to the After School Sports Coordinator.

Typical duties may include, but are not limited to the following: work as a field attendant in our flag football leagues; work as a scorekeeper in our volleyball and basketball leagues; possess a firm understanding of league rules and policies; ensure that games and practices operated in a safe, inclusive environment; report any issues immediately to gym/ field supervisor and/or After School Sports Coordinator; address all parent and coaches in a professional manner; maintain and care for all sports and mobile rec equipment; follow departmental and city-wide rules and regulations as they relate to the supervision of sports program and general work procedures; assist with other programs within the Parks & Recreation Department, including but not limited to, facilities, special events, and other youth programs.
