The Newark Recreation and Community Services Department is seeking enthusiastic individuals who are passionate about working with the public and have a genuine interest in coaching and serving as positive role models in their community. This role involves teaching the fundamentals of various sports, as well as coaching, refereeing, and scorekeeping for both youth and adult sports programs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Coach and referee youth & adult sports programs to maintain standards of play and ensure the safety of all participants.

• Teach and explain the rules and regulations of basketball, volleyball, baseball, etc.

• Confer with other coaches/referees, players and facility managers in order to provide information, coordinate activities, and discuss problems.

• Score keep or referee games as assigned.

• Maintain the gymnasium area including equipment and facility.

• Meet and deal tactfully and effectively with the public.

• Perform other job-related duties within the scope of this job classification as assigned.

Energetic, organized, and responsible individuals who enjoy working with school-age children are encouraged to apply. Recreation Leaders will assist in the implementation and planning of a wide variety of arts and crafts, sports, games, special events, and excursions. Candidates will work either for the Ash Street Summer program at Ash Street Park or Camp Newark at the Silliman Center.  Both positions require candidates to work in an outdoor environment.   

Work Schedule: Since this is a summer-only position, it is expected that applicants can work Monday-Friday with limited vacation time (less than one week) during the below program dates: 

Ash Street Summer Program: Monday-Friday: June 22-July 24, 10:30am – 3:30pm, no camp on July 3 

Camp Newark: Monday-Friday: June 8– July 31, 7:30 am – 4:15 pm, morning and midday shifts available. 

REQUIREMENTS: 

• City application (Only accepted via Calopps) 

• Must be at least 15 years of age  

• Prior experience working with school-age children is preferred but not required. 

• Must successfully pass a TB test before an appointment, which is at your own cost.  

• Required to submit to a City Fingerprint Background Investigation if over the age of 18. 

• Work Permit Documentation may be required 

Camp Newark is seeking a confident, creative, and organized leader to serve as an Activity Coordinator for our dynamic summer camp program. This role is ideal for individuals who thrive in high-energy environments and are passionate about creating meaningful experiences for youth ages 6–11. 

The Activity Coordinator plays a key leadership role in planning and delivering engaging daily programming while supporting and supervising camp staff. This position requires strong communication, organization, and leadership skills, along with the ability to create a fun, structured, and safe camp environment. 

Key Responsibilities: 

• Create, schedule, and implement creative camp activities for youth ages 6–11, including arts and crafts, sports, games, and STEM-based enrichment. 

• Lead, mentor, and evaluate camp counselors, including training and delegating responsibilities. 

• Coordinate daily camp schedules, special events, and field trips. 

• Maintain clear and professional communication with parents regarding camper experiences and program information. 

• Ensure a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment for all participants. 

• Support overall camp operations and assist with problem-solving as needed. 

This position requires working both indoors and outdoors in a fast-paced summer camp setting. 

WORK SCHEDULE 

Summer-only position (June – August) 

Monday–Friday 

30–35 hours per week 

Applicants should be available throughout the majority of the summer season, with limited vacation time (less than one week preferred). 

Interviews will take place through early May 2026. Virtual interviews are available for applicants away at school. 

REQUIREMENTS 

• Must be at least 18 years of age. 

• City application (only accepted via CalOpps). 

• Prior experience working with school-age children is required.

• In accordance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act, all employees must provide proof of U.S. Citizenship or authorization to work in the United States.

KEY DATES: CANDIDATES SELECTED FOR AN INTERVIEW SHOULD ENSURE THEIR AVAILABILITY ON THE FOLLOWING DATES:

• Soccer Referee Interviews: April 14 and April 15 between 3:30PM and 4:45PM 

• Soccer Referee Trainings: Tentative April 17 and April 20

• First Game: April 21

Games will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays 

Individuals must be able to officiate and control games, events, and competitions in a confident, appropriate manner. Ensure all participants understand and comply with game rules and assess penalties when needed. Make game calls with confidence and knowledge of league rules. Keep track of event start times, and start or stop play as necessary.

• Demonstrate excellent customer service and communicate effectively with co-workers, parents, and children. 
• Possess strong leadership skills in one or more of the following areas: art, crafts, sports, drama, cooking.
• Manage the task of checking in and checking out each child to the proper guardian.
• Encourage good behavior and appropriate manners.
• Encourage active play, read books and provide a safe and nurturing environment.
• Implement and lead appropriate activities for 1st – 5th grade aged children.
• Supervise play activities and ensure the safety of the children during such activities.
• Supervise and engage students during the afterschool program hours.
• Motivate participants through example.
• Must be a team player and have the ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
• Create and maintain a positive afterschool environment.
• Accurately maintain attendance records.
• Practice proper hygiene, with self and children, to deter the spread of disease (colds, flu, etc).

• Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The City of Redwood City Parks, Recreation & Community Services Department invites you to apply for the casual position of Building Attendant. This position requires weekday and weekend shifts and may include both daytime and evening hours. A person in this classification will work flexibly, up to 20 hours per week. Hours and locations will vary across multiple community centers, and Building Attendants will be required to open and/or close the facility as needed.

Typical duties include, but are not limited to: provide excellent customer service to youth, teens, adults, and seniors; oversee the use of the facility insuring that patrons conform to established City and building rental policies and procedures; perform classroom and multi- purpose room set-up and breakdowns for classes, meetings, and building rentals; perform front desk customer service functions; perform minor clean-up as needed including, cleaning bathrooms, floors, windows, counter tops, and emptying garbage; lock and unlock doors; secure building; set up supplies and equipment as dictated by program needs; and perform related duties as assigned.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The City of Redwood City Parks, Recreation & Community Services Department is looking for enthusiastic people to work within our After School Sports and Mobile Recreation programs operated out of Red Morton Community Center. The hours of this position could be Monday through Friday, from 3:30pm-8:30pm during the school year, but nighttime and weekend hours will be mandatory depending on special events and program needs. During the spring and summer, duties will include, but are not limited to, serving as an assistant coach within our Junior Dribblers basketball program and assisting with mobile recreation activities at various parks and school sites. This position will work under the gym/field supervisor and report directly to the After School Sports Coordinator.

Typical duties may include, but are not limited to the following: work as a field attendant in our flag football leagues; work as a scorekeeper in our volleyball and basketball leagues; possess a firm understanding of league rules and policies; ensure that games and practices operated in a safe, inclusive environment; report any issues immediately to gym/ field supervisor and/or After School Sports Coordinator; address all parent and coaches in a professional manner; maintain and care for all sports and mobile rec equipment; follow departmental and city-wide rules and regulations as they relate to the supervision of sports program and general work procedures; assist with other programs within the Parks & Recreation Department, including but not limited to, facilities, special events, and other youth programs.
