ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The San Rafael Fire Department is an all-risk fire agency with 69 highly trained operational firefighters providing services in firefighting, Advanced Life Support (ALS) response, ambulance transport, technical rescue, hazardous material response, disaster response, fire prevention, and community preparedness.   

The San Rafael Fire Department delivers exceptional public service from seven neighborhood fire stations.  Our department philosophy of community fire servicing emphasizes collaborative relationships with the community.  

THE POSITION

The San Rafael Fire Department is seeking a full-time Administrative Analyst to join our Administrative Division.  At the direction of the Department's Senior Management Analyst, this position provides professional administrative support to the Fire Department, with responsibilities including contracting, grant management, principles in accounting and other administrative duties.

The ideal candidate will be a blend of the following skills and experience:

• Background and knowledge of accounting and budgeting including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and budgeting.
• Experience with managing contracts, risk management, and the RFP process.
• Ability to create flyers, news posts, and other outreach material to the broader community.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare clear, accurate meeting agendas, minutes, and memos.
• Experience with payroll and understanding of basic human resources policies and principles.
• Ability to analyze data and present concise written recommendations or summaries of findings.
• A collaborative, service-oriented approach to working with the public, internal staff, and staff across departments.

• Plans, organizes, coordinates and implements day-to-day program assignments independently.
• Conducts research, analyzes data, and presents conclusions and recommendations.
• Analyzes federal and state laws and regulations as they relate to assigned programs and develops and implements changes.
• Develops program manuals, comprehensive reports, handouts, flyers, newsletters, and other documents for communicating program  information.
• Drafts and publishes authorized social media posts, consistent with City messaging, and responds to citizen inquiries on behalf of Department.
• Plans and coordinates civic engagement events.
• Participates in the training of clerical personnel.  May provide work direction to others.
• Prepares comprehensive written reports regarding program activities.
• Educates and engages with other city staff, city council, community representatives, and citizens.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:  (Please see  job spec for additional details):  

• Equivalent to an Associate's degree with college course work in public administration, business administration, or a related field, AND
• Three (3) years of progressively responsible administrative support experience, preferably within a public agency.
• Experience involving extensive written customer communications, employer social media posts, research, budget preparation/reconciling; development of marketing materials and event planning/coordination may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Marinwood Fire Department operates as a single station all-risk Advanced Life Support (ALS) engine company that includes nine (9) professional firefighters trained in areas of firefighting, ALS/BLS emergency response, technical rescue, disaster response, fire prevention, and community preparedness.  The department works closely with the City of San Rafael Fire Department under an existing Shared Services Agreement.  This includes San Rafael Fire Department providing all chief officer services, ambulance services, and joint training programs.  Our mission is to partner with our community to proactively reduce risk from fire, illness, injury and other hazards.

The San Mateo Consolidated Fire Department commenced operations on January 13, 2019. This classification includes a variety of assignments in preventing, controlling and extinguishing fires, performing emergency medical care and rescue operations, public education activities, and maintenance operations. While time spent fighting fires constitutes a small fraction of the scheduled work time, incumbents must be able to meet such emergencies and the hazards which may involve considerable physical exertion, and potential risk to health and safety.

The Opportunity:

To perform technical inspection and investigative work in enforcing compliance with laws, ordinances and regulations pertaining to the prevention and control of fires; and do related work as required. The Fire Prevention Inspector I/II position is flexibly staffed based on experience.

This is the entry level class in the Fire Prevention Inspection series. This class is distinguished from the Fire Prevention Inspector II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series including weed abatement and smoke detector inspections, which do not require prior specialized experience. Generally, work is observed and reviewed both during performance and upon completion, and changes in procedures and exceptions to rules are explained in detail as they arise. Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience.

What You’ll Do:

• Interpret and enforce provisions of fire prevention and fire safety laws, ordinances, and other regulations.
• Perform periodic inspections of new and existing buildings, structures and installations requiring fire clearances; identify fire hazards; recommend corrective actions; perform follow-up inspections to see that corrective actions have been taken.
• Investigate complaints pertaining to violation of fire prevention laws; issue correction orders as necessary.
• Investigate fires; secure fire scenes; identify types of fires; investigate causes of fire; collect, prepare, and present evidence; interview witnesses and suspects; write fire investigations; testify in court when required.
• Provide information to the public concerning the fire prevention practices and procedures; develop and conduct training programs and group presentations relative to fire prevention and fire investigation.

The City of San Bruno Fire Department offers an exciting opportunity to serve as a Fire Cadet. Our one-year Fire Cadet program is an unpaid, volunteer work experience program that offers hands-on training, and introductory knowledge of firefighting skills, fire service tools and equipment. Cadets respond to emergency calls, render Basic Life Support and participate in training, and participate in the daily station duties.

Cadets must be willing to commit to 24-hour shifts, two to four times per month. The cadet program is one year in length. Upon completion, this program meets the manipulative training and experience requirements in obtaining a California State Fire Marshal’s Office Firefighter II certification.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

• State of California EMT certification
• Possession of a valid driver’s license and a driving record with minimal violations
• Possession of a Firefighter I Academy certification (or proof of “student in good standing” letter signed by an Academy Instructor if currently enrolled)
• 18 years of age at the time of application

The Skywalker Fire Brigade Fire Chief (FC) position will supervise, lead, and train the Skywalker Fire Brigade (Department). This is a management position for 9 employees that staffs one private fire station and has the opportunity to build and direct a motivated staff of firefighters. The Fire Chief will oversee three duty Captains and their projects, providing guidance and leadership for the organization. The Fire Chief will oversee daily schedules with regard to standard prevention activities, training, and special events. Oversee fire prevention inspections, lead vegetation management projects including pile burning, shaded fuel breaks, and interact with the property insurance agent and facilities manager for future projects. The Chief will represent the Skywalker Fire Brigade during county-wide meetings for Operations and Training. Skywalker Fire employees provide an extraordinary level of customer service and hospitality to Skywalker Properties' clientele. While this role operates within a Brigade fire department, the position itself is mostly comprised of prevention and training. This is a great opportunity to train and develop individuals in a unique, private environment with a dedicated and passionate team to support our mission.

Skywalker Holdings has several locations. The Fire Brigade operates at The Skywalker Ranch in Marin County, Nicasio, CA. Skywalker is a private organization that operates 5,000 acres of wildland urban interface land with various types of infrastructure within it. At the Presidio (San Francisco, CA) there are numerous buildings that are also included in the prevention responsibilities. The Ranch operates numerous buildings, smaller organization and other operations within the that support the greater vision of Skywalker Properties Ltd.  

Schedule:

This position will work a semi-flexible 40hr work week as to oversee and manage 3 shifts who are on a 48/96 work schedule. Flexibility is determined by the President and subject to department need as well attending any critical meetings with leadership teams. Remote work hours may be included in the flexibility.

Although rare, there are times when the Chief might have to back-fill staffing and/or provide staffing on apparatus due to non-fillable vacancies or training needs.
