ABOUT THE ROLE 
The Facilities Manager provides strategic leadership and oversight of building operations and facilities programs. This role leads the Bay Area Headquarters Authority (BAHA) Shared Services Organization (SSO), which works in tandem with the building’s property management team to manage building operations, emergency preparedness programs, guides the agency’s space planning and ergonomic strategies to support evolving organizational needs. The Facilities Manager supervises the Facilities Team and partners with internal leadership sections, and external service providers to align facilities operations with agency priorities.

At a strategic level, the Facilities Manager develops and advances facilities programs that optimize space utilization, ensure operational resilience, manage financial resources responsibly, and maximize long-term asset value. The role serves as a key liaison to stakeholders, promoting a customer-focused approach while ensuring regulatory compliance, fiscal discipline, and sustainable facility operations.

This role requires a leader who can ensure the reliability of existing building systems while identifying and implementing strategic improvements that modernize facilities operations, enhance efficiency, and support evolving workplace needs. Key priorities include maintaining safe and compliant building systems, optimizing space utilization, strengthening stakeholder and vendor partnerships, and reinforcing strong financial and operational discipline.

Join our team of dedicated staff working in the special events division of Redwood City’s Parks, Recreation, & Community Services Department. Team members will assist in setting up, monitoring, and breaking down events all while providing excellent customer service.

 

ABOUT THE POSITION
Redwood City is known for delivering a large variety of high-quality special events year-round including concerts, festivals, cultural events, kids concerts, pop up recreational activities, and more. Duties for this position include, but are not limited to, the following: follow event plan and execute assigned duties effectively and efficiently; understand proper setup and breakdown procedures of special events equipment; maintain and care for equipment as necessary; monitor program areas for quality assurance; operate effectively as a member of a team; report to supervisors orally and in writing; complete assigned paperwork such as timecards and incident and/or accident reports.
Work schedules can vary during the year pending current event programming. Candidates can expect an average of 15-20 hours per week throughout the year.

Under the supervision of the Fire Marshal, is responsible for performing plan review, construction inspections, and other duties as required.   The position will also be involved to varying degrees with public education, public relations, exterior hazard abatement, engine company pre-fire planning, record keeping, and report writing.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Receives supervision from the Fire Marshal. There may be limited supervisory tasks assigned to this classification.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

This position is responsible for the review of plans, to ensure compliance with applicable Federal, State, and local fire safety laws, ordinances, and codes. Although not all inclusive the following serve to represent the various types of plans to be reviewed: planning applications; applications for the subdivision of land; site plans for access and water supply; building and tenant improvement plans; fire protection systems including fire sprinkler, fire alarm, kitchen hood extinguishing systems; and other types of plan reviews that are part of various fire code permitted activities.

The position is responsible for performing inspections related to the project and plan review of both new and existing buildings; witnessing various tests required for sophisticated fire protection equipment and verifying proper operation and compliance with applicable codes and standards; prepares necessary correspondence, reports and records; with regards to projects confers with architects, engineers, developers, etc.; attends training courses and meetings of professional organizations as directed. 

Other duties include: attending meetings with other local government agencies such as planning and building departments, architects, contractors, developers, and the general public.  Utilizes the District’s citation process when appropriate and when other means of gaining voluntary compliance are unsuccessful. Provides supervision, work direction and technical assistance as directed. Utilizes tools and technology identified by the District related to performance of tasks. Performs surveys of fire hazards and processes complaints; conducts and participates in public education and public relations programs; performs other related duties as directed.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

• Responds to fire alarms, emergency medical calls at the basic life support level, emergency rescues, hazardous materials incidents, public service calls or other incidents, which require the mitigation of circumstances that may threaten life or property.
• Drives and operates all fire equipment and locates the apparatus at the proper place at the scene.
• In a fire emergency, lays, connects, charges and uses supply lines and various water appliances to control and extinguish fires; places water curtains and performs ventilating and access maneuvers; uses foam and chemical extinguishers as required by the nature of the fire.
• Searches and rescues victims from buildings, motor vehicles, water hazards and other locations.
• Applies medical treatment and life support techniques within the scope of an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT); provides assistance to qualified paramedics, as directed; assists in the emergency transportation of patients.
• Contains, isolates, and minimizes hazardous materials spills.
• Works closely with other emergency medical staff, police and public safety and fire personnel from other agencies; responds to mutual aid situations as required.
• Participates in investigations, clean-up, salvage, and overhaul operations.
• Participates in the fire inspections of buildings and properties within the City on a regularly scheduled basis.
• Maintains apparatus and vehicles in a clean and operable condition; performs minor maintenance and repair on equipment; reports the need for major repair.
• Maintains the station and living quarters in a clean and orderly condition; performs minor maintenance on facilities and station equipment.
• Participates in drills and training sessions.
• Develops and maintains effective working relationships with the community; presents a variety of educational and public services programs to children, youth and community groups.
• Performs and coordinates specific program or project areas.
• Prepares reports; prepares and maintains logs, records, and accurate files.

This is a fantastic opportunity to make a difference in your community, build meaningful relationships, and work in a fun, supportive team environment.  We are looking for team members who are energetic, driven, and passionate about creating a fun, safe, and positive experience for participants of all ages.  You will support after-school programs, youth activities, sports, gymnastics, community events, and senior center programs.  
 
Shifts vary between 7:00 AM – 10:00 PM (most positions in sports and events have a later end time, while youth/senior programs typically are daytime hours).

About the Position
Depending on the assigned program, the duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

After School Programs

• Opening and closing facilities
• Monitoring, coordinating and running classes

Arrillaga Recreation Center (Events)

• Opening and closing the building
• Answering phones
• Ability to learn, use, and perform tasks in recreation software systems
• Setting up and cleaning up events and facility rentals
• Overseeing and monitoring the Recreation facilities during facility rentals Gymnasium/Sports
• Performing outstanding customer service
• Basketball, Volleyball and Softball scorekeeping
• May be responsible for handling money and organizing class sign-in sheets 

Gymnastics

• Working directly with children in gymnastics classes, supporting skill development, confidence, and independence
• Demonstrating skills and modeling positive behavior as a role model for students
• Communicating with parents as needed about progress, development, and questions
• Maintaining class discipline using positive reinforcement and progressive behavior management techniques

Senior Center

• Helping serve meals
• Helping coordinate activities
• Serving as Kitchen Cook

 

These positions are part-time, hourly, non-benefited classifications limited to a maximum of 1,000 hours per fiscal year (or approximately 20 hours a week). 

 

Physical Requirements
This position requires a moderate to high level of physical activity depending on program assignment. Duties may include standing, walking, bending, squatting, kneeling, reaching, and sitting for extended periods of time while facilitating programs, interacting with participants, or performing administrative tasks. Employees must be able to actively supervise and engage participants in a variety of recreation programs and activities, both indoors and outdoors, and move quickly to respond to participant needs and ensure safety. The position may also require lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling equipment, supplies, tables, chairs, or other materials weighing up to approximately 30 – 50 pounds as part of program setup and breakdown. Some assignments may involve computer and desk work for program planning, communication, and administrative duties.
