NOTE: This is a part-time, non-benefitted position with the Mill Valley Arts and Recreation Department starting in September 2026. Approximately 15-20 hours per week; must not exceed 1000 hours in the fiscal year. 

DEFINITION: Under general supervision from Preschool Instructor(s) and the Recreation Supervisor, the preschool aide assists in planning, organizing, and implementing preschool programming for children ages 2-5 years old in a range of classes from introductory drop-off preschool classes to Kindergarten preparedness preschool classes. Program hours are M-F PM 8:30am – 1:00pm. Approximately 20– 23 hours a week. Preschool aides must be willing and able to both take direction from the Preschool Instructor and work independently when fulfilling tasks. Substitute and on-call positions also available.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

• Assists in the development, coordination, planning, implementing and supervising the day-to-day activities, themes and special events for an ongoing preschool program.

• Create and maintain a safe, nurturing, and creative environment.

• Supervise and engage preschool students during preschool program hours.

• Demonstrate excellent customer service and communicate effectively with co-workers, parents, and children.

• Maintain registration, attendance, and activity records; ensure the proper pick-up/drop-off of children. 

• Encourage good behavior, appropriate manners, read books and engage with all preschool students. 

• Implement and lead appropriate activities for preschool-aged children.

• Possess strong leadership skills in one or more of the following areas: art, crafts, sports, drama, cooking.

• Motivate children by example; create and maintain a positive environment for all. 

• Must be a team player and have the ability to work independently with minimum supervision.

• Practice proper hygiene, with self and children, to deter the spread of disease (colds, flu, etc).

• Render first aid in case of minor injuries.

• Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing.

• The ability to speak English clearly and understandably.

• Perform related duties as required.

• Must be able to lift 50lbs.

 

TRAINING & EXPERIENCE: Any combination of education, training, and experience, which likely provides the required knowledge and abilities.

Facility and Sports Field Attendants work in the formal Suisun City classification of Recreation Specialist I. Starting hourly rate will depend on qualifications. This position works on average 19 hours per week.

                                  APPLICATION PROCESS:

1. Submit Online Application

2. Written Examination Requirement

• Complete the National Testing Network (NTN) FrontLine National Written Exam within one year prior to application or after submitting your application.

                                           TESTING PROCESS:

1. Written Examination

• Candidates who pass will receive a Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ).

2. Oral Interview & Eligibility List

• Candidates who submit a complete PHQ will be invited to an oral interview with Background Detectives.
• Successful candidates are placed on an eligibility list.

3. Background Investigation

• Includes:

  • Medical evaluation

  • Psychological assessment

  • Polygraph examination

  • Drug/alcohol screening

  • Employment verification

4. Physical Agility Testing

• Candidates must meet the following standards:

  • 1‑Mile Run: 10 minutes

  • Solid Fence Climb: 13.5 seconds

  • Chain Link Fence Climb: 10 seconds

  • Body Drag (165 lbs): 14 seconds

  • 99‑Yard Obstacle Course: 25 seconds

5. Final Interview

• Candidates who pass all prior stages will participate in the Chief’s Final Oral Interview.

• Theft.
• Unlawful carrying of a concealed weapon.
• A sex act in which the other party was under eighteen years of age.
• Demonstrated history of irresponsible motor vehicle operation.
• A “Failure to Appear” on your driving record.
• D.U.I. conviction.
• Applicants under psychological/psychiatric care.
• Military discipline or less than honorable discharge.
• Demonstrated history of financial irresponsibility.
• Failure to keep appointments or submit documentation in a complete, neat and timely fashion during the hiring process.
