ABOUT THE POSITION

• Operates a light tractor with gang or sickle mower attachment, small roller or comparable attachment.
• Operates light equipment such as mowers, aerators, spray rigs, utility vehicles, backhoes, front-end loaders and dump trucks.
• Prunes small trees and shrubs
• Edges ground cover.
• Repairs irrigation, installs plant material, performs landscape construction duties.

General:

• Operates various equipment involved in the maintenance of street, sanitary sewers, storm sewers, water distribution system, parks, street trees, or golf course.
• Operates equipment such as air compressors, pneumatic hammers, power activated hammers, chain saws, concrete saws, pipe cutters, sprayers, compactors, forklifts, painting and spraying equipment and rollers.
• Operates power tools such as air compressors, jack hammers, wet tapping machines and painting and spraying equipment;
• Loads, unloads and operates pick-ups and trucks to transport maintenance supplies and materials.
• Places traffic control flags, signs and cones to direct traffic around work sites; may direct traffic.
• Uses general carpentry and mechanical hand tools such as brooms, rakes, shovels, ladders, hammers, screwdrivers, pliers, saws, drills and wrenches.
• Performs routine maintenance and repair of hand and power tools.
• Tactfully responds to questions and comments from the public.
• Responsible for the safe operation of equipment and tools used.
• May prepare and keep written records and make material and equipment requests.
• May perform some tasks regularly assigned to senior level classes, particularly on a training basis.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Position requires sitting, standing, walking on level, uneven and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movements in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when operating assigned equipment. Acute hearing is required in both the field and the office. The ability to lift, carry and push tools, equipment and supplies weighing up to 70 pounds, such as a jackhammer, is also required. Additionally, the incumbent in this outdoor position works in all weather conditions, including wet, heat, and cold. The incumbent may be exposed to fumes, dust chemicals, biohazard materials and air contaminants. The nature of the work may also require the incumbent to climb ladders, use power and noise producing tools and equipment, work in confined spaces, drive motorized vehicles and work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions. Some of these requirements may be accommodated for otherwise qualified individuals requiring and requesting such accommodations.

The base salary for this classification includes pay for potentially hazardous duties as listed in the essential job functions. 

 

Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience

The minimum qualifications for education and experience can be met in the following way:

Graduation from high school or tested equivalent; AND

Two years of maintenance experience equivalent to the level of Maintenance Worker I.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: 

• The basic techniques, equipment and materials used in the maintenance of water systems, sewers and/or streets, as required by the program to which assigned.
• The safety procedures for operating equipment and power tools.
• The proper use and care of common hand tools.
• Work practices governing the maintenance and construction of municipal facilities such as streets, sewers, water lines, golf courses, and landscaped areas;
• Landscaped maintenance practices

Ability to: 

• Work effectively alone and as a member of a crew.
• Operate a dump truck or like mover vehicles requiring comparable skills.
• Operate pneumatic and power tools
• Locate utilities and understand Underground Service Alert (USA) procedures as required by the specific position.
• Safely perform heavy manual labor.
• Learn the operation of power tools and equipment and the performance of a variety of semi-skilled tasks.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The City of Gilroy is recruiting an undergraduate or graduate-level City Emergency Management College Summer Intern for the summer of 2026. This internship will provide a significant opportunity to gain experience and exposure and accumulate skills that are used daily in city government emergency management programs that make substantial impacts to the community. The Emergency Management Team works year-round to ensure that community is prepared for disasters through planning, training, outreach, and coordination with local and regional partners. Working under the supervision of the Emergency Services and Volunteer Coordinator, the Emergency Management Intern will assist with planning, preparedness, outreach, and administrative functions that support OEM programs and Emergency Operations Center (EOC) readiness. WOODLAND JOINT UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT HOST SITE

Woodland Joint Unified School District (WJUSD) is partnering with the City of Woodland to host two fellows as part of this year’s Civic Fellowship Program. The fellows will work on-site at WJUSD Business Services Office and receive day-to-day guidance and supervision from WJUSD staff while remaining part of the fellowship cohort and participating in program-wide activities.

 

This posting is for the Logistics & Inventory Systems Fellow within the Transportation Department in Business Services at WJUSD.  

 

Typical work hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday; and 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Friday, up to 40 hours per week.

 

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Woodland Joint Unified School District (WJUSD) Service Center is seeking a motivated Civic Fellow to support inventory organization and management of parts and materials essential to district operations. This role provides hands-on experience in warehouse operations, inventory systems, and process improvement within a public education environment.

The Fellow will assess current storage and inventory practices and help implement a more efficient, organized system. Responsibilities may include developing labeling structures, organizing storage areas, establishing inventory tracking procedures, and improving material accessibility for staff. In collaboration with Service Center personnel, the Fellow will identify opportunities to enhance efficiency, organization, and accountability.

This fellowship offers practical experience in warehouse logistics, operational system design, and cross-functional collaboration, while building skills in organization, problem-solving, and process improvement within a public sector setting.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general directions from the designated WCC host-site employee.

 

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented, organized, and motivated individual interested in operations, logistics, engineering, business, or public service. The Civic Fellow should be comfortable working independently and as part of a team, and willing to take initiative to improve organization and efficiency.
The successful candidate will demonstrate strong problem-solving skills, a willingness to learn new systems, and the ability to think critically about processes. Interest in organization, data tracking, or hands-on operational work such as inventory or warehouse systems is desirable. Experience with spreadsheets or data entry is helpful but not required.
Additionally, the ideal candidate will have strong communication skills, a positive attitude, and reliability. This position is well suited for someone who enjoys solving practical challenges and contributing to systems that help organizations run effectively.

 

THE POSITION OBJECTIVES/GOALS

The goals of the position are to:

1. Accurately assess and document current inventory of parts and materials within the WJUSD Service Center, including storage locations, item categories, and current organizational practices.

2. Review existing storage systems to identify inefficiencies, inconsistencies, or gaps, and coordinate with Service Center, Maintenance, and Transportation staff to improve organization.

3. Develop and implement a standardized organizational structure for parts and materials, including clear storage locations, labeling practices, and logical grouping of inventory.

4. Improve inventory accessibility and efficiency by helping establish procedures that allow staff to quickly locate, store, and track commonly used materials.

5. Create simple documentation and reference materials to support consistent inventory organization practices, including basic procedures for storing and locating materials.

6. Develop a working understanding of school district operational support systems, including how the Service Center supports Maintenance, Facilities, and Transportation functions.

7. Contribute to continuous process improvement by identifying opportunities to improve inventory organization, storage workflows, and material tracking practices.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

• 4+ years of high school
• Local Woodland knowledge preferred
• Strong interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail 
• Strong computer skills
• Ability to build and maintain trust-based relationships with multiple internal and external stakeholders 
• Eligible to work in the United States
• Valid California driver license (if driving is an essential duty)

 

SALARY RANGE

$20.00 - $25.00 / hour dependent on experience.

This role offers a hands-on opportunity to gain experience in sustainability practices, facilities operations, and process improvement within a public education setting.

The Civic Fellow will assist in assessing current district practices related to recycling, waste reduction, and resource conservation. This may include reviewing recycling programs, observing waste management practices at school sites, and identifying opportunities to improve sustainability efforts. Working closely with Maintenance, Operations, and Facilities staff, the Fellow will help research best practices and develop practical recommendations to improve environmental outcomes and operational efficiency.

This fellowship provides practical exposure to sustainability planning, facilities management, and public sector operations, equipping participants with valuable skills in research, data analysis, environmental practices, and process improvement while contributing to the district’s commitment to responsible resource management.
