Summary: 
Under general supervision, organizes, oversees and coordinates specialized recreational programs for the community and provides staff assistance in a specialized program area; and performs other duties as assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Plans, organizes and implements specialized recreation programs for an assigned community area or group; verifies instructor availability; resolves conflicts related to activities and events.
• Promotes participation in scheduled activities and explains specialized programs to patrons; interfaces with prospective and current participants through emails, telephone and social media contacts; collaborates with marketing team to create fliers, assists in collecting information for print material, submits material for approval, and posts print advertisements.
• Coordinates the planning, promoting and implementing of programs and activities including registration and operations of special events offered by the unit.
• Participates in collecting fees for services; provides patron assistance with payments; properly stores or transfers cash monies; processes refund requests.
• Serves as liaison with community groups to assess needs and proposes program ideas; engages patrons to solicit feedback on existing programs and identifies gaps in service; implements changes and adjustments to programs to enhance participants’ experience.
• Generates a variety of records and reports related to all aspects of programming; maintains participation logs as well as staff scheduling for respective programs and events; assists with the development of master schedule to be viewed by the public; and tracks revenue and expendi­tures.
• Assists in conducting training programs for staff in specialized recreation area including monthly in-service meetings; maintains training documentation; assists in recruiting volunteers and contract personnel; properly retains and files documents.
• Performs regular safety inspections of assigned units; initiates maintenance work orders; maintains appropriate emergency supplies and first aid inventory for facility.
• Initiates purchase orders for supplies and equipment; manages order delivery; maintains budget and documents expenses.
• May be assigned to camp programs.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

• May be required to drive a District or personal vehicle.
• May attend and participate in councils or associations related to specialty.
• Participates during disasters or when emergency response is needed.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfac­torily. Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skill and/or ability listed below is qualifying.

Education/Experience: A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: graduation from high school or GED and at least 2,000 hours of relevant work or volunteer experience, at least 30 units completed in recreation or a related field. An associate degree is preferred. Must be at least 18 years old.

Language Ability: Ability to communicate effectively in English in both written and oral form. Ability to write routine correspondence using correct spelling and grammar.

Math Ability: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers, fractions and decimals.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to use common sense and exercise good judgement in solving problems. Ability to establish effective relationships with fellow employees, volunteers and participants and parents/guardians.

Certificates and Licenses:

• First Aid & CPR/AED within 90 days of employment with ability to maintain certifications thereafter as a condition of employment
• Valid California driver’s license with a good driving record and current automobile insurance. For ^Therapeutics unit: ability to obtain a commercial driver license within one year of employment (for a 15-passenger van).
• Department of Justice fingerprint clearance
• Proof of a negative TB skin test
• Conejo Senior Volunteer Program (CSVP): ability to obtain ServSafe Food Manager
  Certification within 90 days of employment

Supervisory Responsibilities: 
This position has no supervisory responsibilities. This position may provide guidance or direction to other part-time employees and to volunteers.

The Program Administrator (Contracts Supervisor) plans, organizes, supervises, and coordinates the procurement by contract of professional consultant services (architectural engineering "A/E" and non-A/E consultants) and specialized Valley Water activities, and coordinates and oversees contract administration activities.  The Program Administrator works on contracts that are highly complex and sensitive in nature, where substantial judgment and initiative are essential in making recommendations and resolving problems. This is a management and leadership position with oversight of a team of contract professionals. This position reports to the Manager of the Purchasing and Consultant Contracts Unit, within the General Services Division.

About the Position: The Planning Department is seeking TWO interns who are interested in learning about open space and planning for ecologically sensitive public recreation. Working Conditions:  This position will report to the Planning Department at the Administrative Office in Los Altos, California.  Midpen offers a hybrid office/telecommute work environment for this position, which will be divided between onsite work, field visits, and limited home office work.  The selected individuals will be required to work a minimum of three days on-site per week, and assignments may vary between field and office work. Field work is conducted in rural or mountainous Midpen open space areas, which may involve working alone or with another intern in wildland areas, traversing rough difficult terrain sometimes with poison oak and dense vegetation, and carrying equipment weighing up to 25 pounds. This is a temporary position working 20 – 40 hours per week (within regular business days/hours). Regular business is conducted Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00am to 5:00pm. About the Position:  The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District (Midpen) Seasonal Ranger Aide is an entry-level position, which provides the opportunity to learn and perform some duties of a ranger under the guidance of experienced ranger staff.  Ranger Aides provide visitor information and assistance, travelling by non-emergency Midpen vehicles and on foot throughout an assigned geographical region. Employees are expected to work full-time (40 hours during the work week); however, school schedules may be accommodated around regular days/hours of operations.  Weekend work (Sat/Sun) is required, with two consistent days off each week (either Mondays/Tuesdays off OR Thursdays/Fridays off), depending on the field office operational needs. Incumbents will work an 8-hour workday (plus a 30-minute unpaid meal break). Daily start and end times will be the same for most workdays, typically scheduled within the range of 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Must be willing to work weekends, nights, holidays, or extended shifts and work with exposure to difficult circumstances, including exposure to challenging situations and upset individuals. Seasonal assignments will not exceed 950 hours or 7 months, whichever comes first, and do not include benefits.

 

Working Conditions: Most work is outdoors within Midpen’s open space lands with exposure to inclement weather conditions. This requires the ability to patrol on foot, off trail, and in rugged terrain.  Also requires the ability to perform related emergency services and maintenance and construction work on Midpen lands. Once trained, Ranger Aides may work alone for parts or all of their shifts. Must wear prescribed District uniform and adhere to strict safety procedures and work habits.

All qualified applicants will be invited to participate in an Oral Appraisal Board interview. Candidates who successfully pass the Oral Board will be placed on an eligibility list based on their performance and ranking.

Physical Agility Examination

• Phase I Includes:
  • 99 Yard Obstacle Course (time limit 25 seconds)
  • Body Drag (165 pounds) (time limit 14 seconds)
  • Chain Link Fence (time limit 10 seconds)
  • Solid Fence (time limit 13.5 seconds)
  • One Mile Run (time limit 10 minutes)
• Phase II: For candidates progressing to the Chief’s Oral Interview process
  • 1.5 Mile Run (time limit 15 minutes)
  • 15 Military Style Push-ups without stopping

 

This thorough process ensures that candidates meet the high standards required to serve the Simi Valley community with integrity and professionalism.
