Sausalito Parks and Recreation is Seeking Vibrant Skilled Recreation Leaders 

This recruitment is for spring, summer and fall events and activities beginning March 9th, such as Bocce and Volleyball Referee, Jazz and Blues, Fourth of July, Chili Cook-off, A Toast to Sausalito, Halloween and other fun classes, activities, and events. Ideal candidates will be available to referee Monday through Thursday each week and/or to staff events on Friday evenings from June through August and occasional Saturdays. 

Pay: $16.90 - $17.90/ Hr.

The City of Sausalito is recruiting part-time temporary help for the spring, summer, and fall seasons of recreation activities and City-wide events.  The first of these is the Bocce League referee.  

Bocce Referee
As a Sausalito Parks and Recreation Bocce Referee, you are responsible for set-up, management, and cleanup of scheduled Bocce matches. You are the enforcer of rules, an impartial judge, and an advocate for fun and fair play, all while maintaining a positive attitude and providing a friendly environment when communicating with teams and keeping score. This position reports directly to the Recreation Supervisor.  The ideal candidate must meet all minimum requirements as listed below and be confident and capable of dealing with conflict and intense games.  

Event Staff

As a Sausalito Parks and Recreation Event Staff member, you are responsible for actively participating in set-up, cleanup, and management of your assigned event.  You must arrive on time and remain until the event leader releases you after the event.   Event staff may set up chairs, tables, stages, corridors, and barriers.  You may be asked to perform traffic control or direct drivers to parking.  The ideal candidate will have a can-do attitude, meet all of the minimum requirements below, remain calm under pressure and in the face of adversity, be cheerful, friendly, and love the diversity of people. 

The minimum requirements for the position are:

• Reliable transportation to and from games or events
• Ability and commitment to arrive on time and remain until duties are completed and you are released
• Confidence and capability to manage conflict with grace and calm
• Commitment to long hours, days, evenings, or on weekends depending on the assigned event schedule
• Must be 14 years of age or older and must obtain a WORK PERMIT if under 18
• Able to work independently
• Excellent people skills
• Strong ability to follow directions
• Ability to lift and carry 25lbs

DEFINITION

Account Clerk I: Under supervision, perform clerical work of difficulty in connection with preparing, maintaining or checking financial or statistical records; receive and receipt money; operate office accounting machines; do related work as required.

 

Account Clerk II: Under general supervision, perform difficult and complex bookkeeping and financial clerical work requiring the application of sound financial record keeping practices; supervise the work of clerical assistants; do related work as required. Positions in this class require frequent use of a high degree of independent judgment and interpretative ability. Duties do not always follow standard routines; the employee recommends changes in methods and procedures when necessary. The class is required to have operating knowledge of financial systems and greater overall experience.

 

Positions in the Account Clerk II positions are flexibly staffed and normally filled from advancement from the Account Clerk I class, or when filled from the outside, require specific accounting experience. Appointment to this class requires the employee to be performing substantially the full range of account clerk duties and to meet the qualifications for the class. The class requires the ability to work independently exercising judgment and initiative and a greater knowledge of the City’s financial system. 

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

 

Either manually or through the use of computers, as appropriate, does responsible clerical accounting work in the maintenance of financial records, recording and checking financial transactions, and preparing financial or statistical statements or reports; waits on counter; receives and receipts money; prepares records to open, change, maintains or closes utility accounts; performs routine arithmetical computations; issues business licenses and files various documents; reconciles invoices, requisitions and purchase orders; prepares payment authorizations; assists in preparing payroll, prepares purchase orders, meter books, cash receipts, journals vouchers and other routine data input for computer processing; operates adding machines; does routine typing of documents and precise computer data entry of financial data.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Knowledge of: Account Clerk I level: Methods, principles, and terminology used in financial clerical work; and modern office practices. Account Clerk II level: Methods, principles, practices and terminology used in complex financial accounting work; municipal bookkeeping principles; modern office methods and procedures.

 

Ability to: Perform clerical work of average difficulty; prepare basic financial reports, maintain journals, ledgers and complex files; operate adding and calculating machines;

perform arithmetic computations rapidly and accurately; interact positively and cooperate with co-workers, respond politely to customers, work as a team member, function under demanding time pressure, respond in a positive manner to supervision, and attend work and perform duties on a regular and consistent basis.

 

Additionally, at the Account Clerk II level.; operate a personal computer, utilizing spreadsheet and word processing software; perform accounting tasks and operate office machines used in accounting or statistical record-keeping work; prepare and analyze financial statements, invoices and reports; make arithmetical calculations readily and accurately; train and supervise the work of a group of clerical assistants; work cooperatively with others; understand and carry out general instructions and work independently.

 

Experience:

 

Account Clerk I: One year of clerical experience involving financial record keeping and general office work; six (6) months of experience using computer spreadsheets is desirable.

 

Account Clerk II: Three years of experience in financial and general record keeping, including six (6) months of personal computer spreadsheet experience. Two years of college (60 semester units or 90 quarter units) can be substituted for one year of required work experience. Three (3) semester units or five (5) quarter units of college level computer course work can be substituted for the spreadsheet experience.

 

Education:

Account Clerk I: Graduation from high school or equivalent.

 

Account Clerk II: Graduation from high school or equivalent and six (6) semester units or nine (9) quarter units of college level financial accounting course work. One year of additional experience may be substituted for the required college units.

The Deputy Director of Public Works / City Engineer, plans, directs and manages assigned functional areas within the engineering or utility division in connection with engineering design, construction, inspection, transportation projects and the capital improvement program; staffs one or more citizen advisory committees; performs advanced professional engineering assignments on a wide range of municipal projects of a complex nature; serves as project manager on a variety of projects; supervises engineering and technical staff of the department directly or through subordinate levels of supervision on a day to day basis; functions as department head in their absence as assigned. Serves as the City Engineer responsible for engineering standards, development review, and oversight of public works engineering activities.

Class Characteristics
Deputy Director of Public Works – City Engineer is a Deputy Director level engineering classification responsible for overseeing the City’s engineering functions and performing a wide variety of engineering duties requiring independent judgement and initiative in prioritizing, scheduling, assigning and coordinating work. This class requires registration as a professional engineer. This class is distinguished from all other engineering classes by its supervisory and administrative responsibilities over a wide range of duties as well as the requirement to perform the more complex engineering and project management assignments. Assignments and projects may be long-term or may constitute a major portion of a continuous or comprehensive engineering or construction program. Typically assigned functional areas include private development review and plan checking, oversight of regulatory compliance (e.g., Municipal Regional Permit [NPDES], Cal-OSHA, SWRCB/RWQCB non-utility related orders), waste franchise, Sierra Point Lighting & Landscape District, and Capital Improvement Program.

 

Supervision Received and Exercised:

Receives general direction from the Public Works Department Head.

Provides general supervision to engineering, maintenance, and administrative support staff.

 

Examples of Important and Essential Duties- the duties described below are provided as examples and are not to be considered as exclusive or all-inclusive:

• Recommends and assists in development and implementation of departmental policies, goals, and objectives.  
• Plans, directs, and coordinates engineering work programs and activities within the Public Works Department, directly and through subordinate levels of supervision.
• Manages the City’s Capital Improvement Program and Projects; supervises, coordinates, and reviews all public works engineering activities, including engineering design, inspection, and survey; contract administration, and construction management for projects planned and approved by City Council; Deputy Director of Public Works prepares plans, specifications, and estimates. Deputy Director of Public Works – City Engineer has overall responsibility for the city’s CIP.  
• Supervises staff assigned, including scheduling, assigning, prioritizing, and reviewing work; training and evaluating staff; approving time off; and developing effective recommendations on all employee actions.

The Department 

The Public Works department is comprised of the Maintenance, Engineering and WQCP (Water Quality Control Plant) divisions. The Maintenance Division is responsible for all of the asphalt and concrete streets within the City as well as all of the associated signalized intersections, streetlights, road signs and traffic markings.  The division also maintains the sanitary sewer/storm system which includes all of the sanitary sewer lines, all of the storm lines and catch basins, several storm water pump stations, as well as various large storm water trash capture devices throughout the City.

THE POSITION

Under close to general supervision, this hourly position is responsible for cleaning and maintaining the downtown corridor, including the removal of litter, debris, and illegal dumping. Duties are primarily driven by SeeClickFix service requests and may include other related maintenance and cleaning tasks as assigned.
 

IDEAL CANDIDATE 

The ideal candidate will have experience with outdoor maintenance work and be familiar with basic tools, equipment, and safety practices related to cleaning and debris removal in public spaces. They will take pride in keeping high-visibility areas clean and welcoming, respond promptly to service requests (such as those submitted through SeeClickFix), and interact professionally with the public and City staff. The ideal candidate will be reliable, self-motivated, and able to work independently or as part of a team, using sound judgment while following established safety procedures.

 

TYPICAL DUTIES (may include but are not limited to the following):

• Conduct daily cleaning and maintenance of the City’s downtown corridor, ensuring all public areas are free of litter and debris.
• Efficiently empty, clean and service all City owned trash receptacles, adhering to waste disposal and sanitation standards.
• Respond to requests for service in real time via smart device.
• Uses a variety of hand and power tools in connection with the above duties; operates light, motorized equipment, such as pick-ups, flatbeds, and dump trucks.
• Identify and report maintenance issues, safety hazards or vandalism during routine duties to appropriate City personnel.
• Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

Experience: One year of experience in general construction or maintenance work.

Training: Equivalent to graduation from high school.

The Department is responsible for policing a city of 181 square miles and over one million residents.

 

THE POSITION

The City of San José Police Department (SJPD) is seeking an experienced executive to serve as Deputy Director and lead the Bureau of Technical Services. Under the direction of the Assistant Chief of Police, the Deputy Director is responsible for developing and overseeing the Department’s strategic technology plan while managing Police Department support divisions, including the Systems Development Division (IT Division), Crime Analysis Unit, Body-Worn Camera Unit, BTS Technology Portfolio Manager, Interoperability Manager, and serving as the City-designated Working Committee board member for the Silicon Valley Regional Interoperability Association.

This position plays a pivotal role in ensuring that SJPD remains at the forefront of law enforcement technology, enhancing officer effectiveness, improving emergency response capabilities, and maintaining public trust. By integrating advanced technology solutions and data-driven decision-making, the Deputy Director directly contributes to the Department’s mission of protecting and serving the San José community with excellence and integrity.

As a key executive within the Police Department, the Deputy Director collaborates closely with the Chief, Assistant Chief, and Deputy Chiefs to lead a dynamic, progressive law enforcement agency. The Deputy Director must bring a balanced combination of law enforcement expertise, technical proficiency, and data analytical skills to drive operational effectiveness, officer safety, and community engagement through innovative technology solutions. This position oversees a staff of 48 with six direct reports and plays a crucial role in ensuring the Department’s IT infrastructure is resilient, secure, and aligned with the mission-critical needs of first responders.

Duties include, but may not be limited to the following:

•    Mentor and lead multiple teams by setting clear division goals, establishing performance standards, and conducting regular staff evaluations. Provide coaching and professional development opportunities to ensure team members align with the Police Department’s strategic IT objectives and operational priorities.

•    Develop, oversee, and enforce Police Department IT governance structures, policies, and security protocols to ensure that technology investments and initiatives support law enforcement operations, mitigate risks, and comply with DOJ Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) Security Policies, as well as other relevant law enforcement regulations and standards.

•    Drive innovation and continuous improvement within the Police Department’s IT infrastructure by leveraging emerging technologies, industry best practices, and data-driven solutions. Identify opportunities to enhance system performance, cybersecurity, scalability, and reliability while optimizing cost efficiency to support critical policing functions, officer safety, and real-time intelligence operations.

•    Proactively monitor and assess the Police Department’s technology solutions, ensuring system roadmaps align with operational needs, investigative requirements, and future policing advancements. Develop strategies to modernize infrastructure, enhance digital forensics capabilities, and improve emergency response efficiency.

•    Collaborate with executive leadership across the Police Department to drive strategic technology initiatives that enhance investigative capabilities, crime analysis, real-time intelligence gathering, and public safety outcomes.

•    Oversee resource allocation and budget management, ensuring timely and measurable technology advancements within financial constraints. Provide strategic recommendations on IT investments and actively participate in long-term technology planning and public safety modernization efforts.

•    Establish and maintain strong partnerships with external vendors, technology providers, and law enforcement agencies to ensure seamless integration of mission-critical solutions. Negotiate contracts, manage vendor performance, and enforce compliance with CJIS security standards to safeguard law enforcement data and digital assets.

•    Collaborate with patrol, investigations, and command staff to integrate technology that enhances officer situational awareness and investigative efficiency. Build strong relationships with regional law enforcement agencies, technology partners, and public safety stakeholders to advance interoperability and intelligence-sharing.

•    Promote employee wellness, staff engagement, and professional development to maintain a highly skilled and mission-focused team. 

•    Directs and oversees the Systems Development Division (SDD), which consists of three specialized teams: the Applications Team, responsible for software solutions and law enforcement applications; the Infrastructure Team, managing networks, servers, and cybersecurity; and the Sworn Team, comprising one sergeant and four officers, ensuring seamless integration of technology with policing operations. This division plays a critical role in advancing the San José Police Department’s technology infrastructure and IT operations, consisting of 23 professionals. SDD drives strategic IT initiatives that enhance investigative capabilities, real-time intelligence, and public safety outcomes. SDD ensures compliance, cybersecurity, and operational resilience by implementing robust governance structures, enforcing CJIS security policies, and leveraging emerging technologies. SDD is managed by a Division Manager who provides leadership and strategic direction to ensure the success of the department’s technology initiatives.

•    Direct and oversee the Crime Analysis Unit (CAU), which is responsible for crime data collection, analysis, and reporting to support strategic, tactical, and administrative law enforcement functions. Ensure compliance with National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) standards for accurate and timely crime reporting to local, state, and federal agencies. Lead the development and enhancement of Power BI dashboards and other analytical tools to provide real-time operational insights to command staff, patrol, and investigative units.

•    Direct and oversee the Body-Worn Camera (BWC) Unit and Photo Lab, ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations, including data retention, security, and public disclosure policies. Ensure the secure storage, retrieval, and management of digital evidence to support investigations, prosecutions, and public transparency. Support public trust and department accountability by implementing best practices for digital evidence management, audit processes, and system integrity.

•    Supervise the Bureau of Technical Services Technology Project Manager, who centralizes and manages all departmentwide projects. This includes overseeing project portfolio management to support executive decision-making on portfolios, projects, programs, and operations. 

•    Supervise the Interoperability Manager, who is responsible for public safety communications and data-sharing across law enforcement agencies. Represent the Police Department in regional and statewide public safety technology initiatives to enhance interagency cooperation and emergency response coordination.

 

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate will be an inspirational and engaged leader capable of advocating and ensuring the success of the Bureau of Technical Services. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are necessary to build positive relationships and engage with several entities, such as the Silicon Valley Regional Interoperability Authority and the Urban Areas Security Initiative, as well as staff and City leadership. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with the other Deputy Chiefs to ensure the mission of the Department and vision of the Chief is accomplished.

The Deputy Director must be an exceptional and seasoned technology professional who can lead a dynamic and forward-thinking organization. A candidate with a comprehensive background in data analytics is sought. A leader in the IT field with strong management and communication skills is desired.

•    A conscientious, professional, and positive individual able to gain credibility and trust within an organization through mutual respect, effective communication, and listening skills.
•    A proven track record and commitment to ensuring success given the challenges of budgetary and staffing deficits is preferred. A solid understanding of the municipal purchasing process is required. 
•    An engaged and inclusive, responsive to the needs of staff and the department and the sense of urgency required in a public safety environment. 
 

QUALIFYING EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Education 

•    A bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, public administration, business administration, information technology, data analytics, or a related field from an accredited college or university.

Experience

•    A minimum of six (6) years of progressively responsible leadership experience in law enforcement technology, crime analysis, digital evidence management, IT governance, or public safety operations within a public or private agency.

•    Experience in a law enforcement, nonprofit, public sector, or corporate environment working with a governing board and in a union, environment is highly desirable.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

The salary range for the Deputy Director is $161,513.30 - $260,737.36

Placement within this range will be dependent upon the qualifications and experience of the individual selected. This salary includes an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable compensation. The salary is supplemented by an attractive benefits package that includes, but is not limited to: 

•    Retirement – Competitive defined benefit retirement plan with full reciprocity with CalPERS.
•    Health Insurance – The City contributes 90% towards the premium for the lowest-priced non-deductible plan. Several plan options are available. 
•    Dental Insurance – The City contributes 100% of the premium of the lowest-priced plan for dental coverage. 
•    Personal Time – Vacation is accrued initially at the rate of three weeks per year with amounts increasing up to five weeks after 15 years of service. Vacation accrual may be adjusted for successful candidates with prior public service to reflect a vacation accrual rate commensurate with total years of public service. Executive Leave of 40 hours is granted annually and depending upon success in the Management Performance Program, could increase to up to 80 hours. Sick Leave is accrued at the rate of approximately 8 hours per month. 
•    Holidays – The City observes 15 paid days annually. 
•    Deferred Compensation – The City offers an optional 457(b) plan. 
•    Flexible Spending Accounts – The City participates in Dependent Care Assistance and Medical Reimbursement Programs. 
•    Insurance – The City provides a term life insurance policy equal to two times annual salary. Long-term disability and AD&D plans are optional.
