THE DEPARTMENT
The Burlingame Police Department is a municipal, full service, community oriented department.  We offer a variety of investigative, preventative, and community policing programs to both protect and serve a community that spans five square miles and is home to more than 28,000 residents.

The Burlingame Police Department is divided into two divisions: Operations and Administration.  The force currently consists of 40 police officers, made up of the Chief of Police, 1 Captain, 2 Lieutenants, 6 Sergeants, 6 Corporals, 2 Inspectors, and 22 Patrol Officers.

We are active in county-wide law enforcement efforts by participating in the San Mateo County Gang Task Force, Avoid the 23 (DUI) Task Force, Narcotic Task Force Details, Alcohol Beverage Control Operations, Office of Traffic Safety grants and as Police Academy Training Officers.

POSITION
Burlingame Police Officers are responsible for preventing crime, arresting law violators, directing traffic, etc.  In that capacity, officers may also serve in special assignments such as K-9, detective, SWAT, hostage teams, FTO, and motorcycle patrol.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

• Patrol various areas within the City by driving a police vehicle or by walking to prevent criminal activity, to enforce various laws, regulations, and codes.
• Respond to radio dispatched calls and reports to crime scenes or locations of disorder to protect life and property.
• Conduct investigations, gathers information and writes factual reports involving criminal activity, traffic accidents, suspicious activity, or other unusual incidents.
• Make arrests as necessary and writes report of all arrests made and activities performed.
• Interview and interrogate suspicious persons, suspects, and prisoners.
• Gather, mark, preserve, and record evidence in criminal or related matters; testify and present evidence in court.
• Serve warrants and subpoenas.
• Assist in the performance of special investigations and perform undercover and surveillance activities when necessary.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge of:

• State laws, local regulations, ordinances, and codes including laws or arrest, current court decisions, General Police procedures and rules.
• Standard police broadcasting procedures and codes.
• Proper use of departmental firearms.
• Geography of the local area.

Ability to:

Skills:

• Operation of police vehicle at high rates of speed during emergency situations.
• Use police vehicle radios as well as hand-held portables and use proper radio codes.
• Use hand-held and/or electronic equipment for drug and alcohol detection.
• Ability to process for and lift latent evidence.
• Finger print and take palm prints from arrestees.
• Use departmentally issued firearms safely and safety equipment.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Candidates must be a US Citizen, at least 21 years of age on date of appointment, a US high school graduate (or GED equivalent), have no felony convictions or disqualifying criminal history.  Must be able to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions, read, comprehend, write, and speak English effectively.

Entry Level - Proof of completing the POST Written Test and Physical Agility Test with a passing score.

Lateral Police Officer - To be considered for a lateral Police Officer appointment, candidates must have prior experience as a sworn law enforcement officer within the past twelve (12) months, including the completion of the field training program and probation period with a law enforcement agency.

San Mateo Medical Center is seeking a professional, goal-oriented Clinical Services Manager I to lead and oversee Perioperative Services, including the Operating Room (OR), Pre/Post-Anesthesia Care Units, Endoscopy, Sterile Processing Department (SPD), and Perioperative Scheduling.

 

In this role, you will plan, organize, direct, and supervise operations to ensure high-quality patient care, regulatory compliance, and efficient service delivery. You will also support staff through training, coaching, and performance management while contributing to continuous improvement efforts.

 

Reporting to the Chief Nursing Officer/Deputy Director, this position provides direct and indirect supervision to professional, clinical, technical, and clerical staff, as well as consultants and contract service providers. You will join a dynamic team dedicated to advancing the mission of a safety net hospital.

 

This role manages a large, complex span of control across multiple service lines and requires the ability to balance high-volume operations, competing priorities, and diverse clinical environments. The Clinical Services Manager operates with a high degree of autonomy, making sound decisions related to operations, staffing, quality, patient safety, and fiscal stewardship.

 

Key responsibilities include coordinating surgical and procedural scheduling, ensuring equipment and instrument availability, overseeing sterile processing operations, and aligning staffing resources. The role also focuses on identifying opportunities to improve efficiency, optimize resource utilization, and support financial performance across perioperative services.

 

The ideal candidate will bring:

• Three years of progressive management or supervisory experience in an accredited hospital or clinic 
• Strong clinical and operational leadership in perioperative services (e.g., Operating Room, Endoscopy, and/or Sterile Processing) 
• Knowledge of perioperative workflows, including surgical scheduling, procedural flow, and instrument processing 
• Experience managing large, complex teams in high-acuity environments 
• Ability to independently prioritize and manage competing operational demands

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated:

• Experience improving procedural throughput, including block utilization and scheduling efficiency 
• Success in identifying and implementing efficiency and cost-reduction opportunities 
• Experience leading structured process improvement initiatives (e.g., Lean, 5S, continuous improvement) 
• Ability to analyze operational and financial data to inform decision-making and improve performance 
• Collaborative experience working with surgeons, anesthesia providers, and interdisciplinary teams

Qualifications

 

Licensure/Certification: 

• Possession of a valid California license as a Registered Nurse (R.N.)
• Must possess a Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certificates approved by the American Red Cross or American Heart Association

Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is;

• Three years of professional nursing experience in an accredited hospital or clinic
• At least one year of supervisory experience
• Two years of the required experience must have been in perioperative nursing

 

Knowledge of:

• Nurse Practice Act.
• Principles and practices of nursing and clinical systems, including safety and infection control practices.
• Principles and practices of community health care including current trends in research, treatment, prevention, education and related services.
• Principles and practices of program management, including planning, implementation, and evaluation.
• Principles of budget preparation and monitoring.
• Principles of personnel training, supervision and evaluation.
• State and other regulatory requirements for assigned unit or program.
• Emergency Medical Services Act (EMS), relevant EMS regulations and functions, and public safety/law enforcement organizations, if assigned to EMS.
• Principles and practices of public health, public health nursing, epidemiology, communicable disease control and prevention, emergency preparedness response and environmental health, if assigned to disease control and prevention and public health nursing programs.
• Non-profit public/private entities, community/faith-based organizations and related state and federal agencies, as well target population for assigned program, if assigned to public health nursing programs.
• Treatment and intervention practices for acute psychiatric population, if assigned to psychiatric nursing.
• Third-party reimbursement systems, revenue streams, and other principles relevant to the financial management of operating rooms, if assigned to perioperative nursing.

 

Skill/Ability to:

• Organize, direct, coordinate and evaluate nursing services that ensure quality patient care and conform to all prescribed standards.
• Work cooperatively with other County departments and public and private organizations, including private medical providers.

The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office is seeking a highly qualified candidate to serve as the Sheriff’s Office Communications Management Analyst, supporting social media content, public information and internal communications.

Reporting directly to the Sheriff’s Director of Communications, this position will oversee development of the Sheriff’s Office Annual Report, assist with major updates to the Sheriff’s Office website, and serve as a lead content developer for the Sheriff’s Office social media accounts.

The Sheriff’s Office Communications Management Analyst will research social media best practices and trends and provide recommendations and ideas to the Sheriff’s Director of Communications and the Sheriff’s Office Communications Team.

This position will also serve as a brand champion, helping define the Sheriff’s Office brand for years to come.

The Sheriff’s Office Communications Management Analyst will assist in writing news releases, feature stories, and other materials. During emergencies, this position may also be called upon to serve as a Public Information Officer (PIO) in the County’s Joint Information Center (JIC).

Primary duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Create engaging content for Sheriff’s Office social media accounts following best practices in policing and local government.
• Manage Sheriff’s Office social media accounts with a customer-service mindset, monitoring messages and comments to ensure timely responses to community questions.
• Capture content at community events, which may occur outside of regular business hours. 
• Edit videos for social media and internal training purposes. 
• Ensure social media and website content complies with accessibility standards.
• Develop and make regular updates to content on the Sheriff’s Office website. 
• Prepare and disseminate internal messaging, news releases, e-newsletter content, and other public information materials as needed.
• Respond to media inquiries in the absence of the Sheriff’s Director of Communications.
• Work collaboratively with members of the Sheriff’s Office Communications Team and Public Information Officers from County departments and allied agencies.
• Design graphics, PowerPoints, and promotional materials for internal and external use.
• Develop an Annual Report for the Sheriff’s Office, coordinating closely with internal stakeholders. 
• Perform related duties as assigned.

In addition, the ideal candidate will possess a bachelor's degree with coursework in journalism, communications, or a related field and will possess three years of public relations, communications, or related experience.

Qualifications

 

Education and Experience: Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

• Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in business administration, public administration, or a related field.
• At least three years of professional administrative experience is typically required for the Management Analyst level.

Knowledge of:

Open & Promotional. Anyone may apply. Current County of San Mateo and County of San Mateo Superior Court of California employees with at least six months (1040 hours) of continuous service in a classified regular, probationary, or extra-help/limited term position prior to the final filing date will receive five points added to their final passing score on this examination.

The examination process will consist of an application screening (weight: pass/fail) based on the candidates' application and responses to the supplemental questions. Candidates who pass the application screening will be invited to a panel interview (weight: 100%), which may include the evaluation of a written or performance exercise given immediately preceding the interview. Depending on the number of applicants, an application appraisal of education and experience may be used in place of other examinations or further evaluation of work experience may be conducted to group applicants by level of qualification. All applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination. All examinations will be given in San Mateo County, California and applicants must participate at their own expense.

The City has new desktop and laptop computers in place for employees. The City already has Crime Analysis and Traffic Analysis software systems in place. A new handheld citations system for traffic has recently been launched. The City also implemented a citywide GIS system, document imaging system, and Intranet, which are available to all staff members. Additionally, we have placed laptops in all patrol cars in order to facilitate timely report writing and response to calls for service.
