The City of San Bruno Fire Department offers an exciting opportunity to serve as a Fire Cadet. Our one-year Fire Cadet program is an unpaid, volunteer work experience program that offers hands-on training, and introductory knowledge of firefighting skills, fire service tools and equipment. Cadets respond to emergency calls, render Basic Life Support and participate in training, and participate in the daily station duties.

Cadets must be willing to commit to 24-hour shifts, two to four times per month. The cadet program is one year in length. Upon completion, this program meets the manipulative training and experience requirements in obtaining a California State Fire Marshal’s Office Firefighter II certification.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

• State of California EMT certification
• Possession of a valid driver’s license and a driving record with minimal violations
• Possession of a Firefighter I Academy certification (or proof of “student in good standing” letter signed by an Academy Instructor if currently enrolled)
• 18 years of age at the time of application

Rewarding aspects of the job: Your work will have a direct impact on the execution of food service operations to Incarcerated Persons within the two correctional facilities, the Youth Services Center-Probation and Staff. Challenging aspects of the job: As a Food Service Worker within the Sheriff’s Office, you will be working in a restrictive environment inside a correctional facility that serves the incarcerated population. You must be able to handle multiple duties at one time, meet tight deadlines, drive a large truck, trouble shoot issues that arise, work independently, and ensure careful delivery of meals between correctional facilities.
   
The ideal candidate will possess the following:

• Food Handling Skills: One year of experience preparing and serving food. Possession of a valid ServSafe Food Handler Certification from the National Restaurant Association.
• Food Safety and Sanitation: Demonstrated understanding and adherence to proper food handling, hygiene, and safety protocols. Awareness of the general food safety and sanitation codes and standards.
• Time Management: Efficiently manage time to coordinate the preparation and cooking of multiple dishes simultaneously. Prioritize tasks in alignment with established procedures and manage time efficiently to meet deadlines while following protocols. Ability to be at your workstation on time.
• Customer Service: Prioritize and handle tasks that directly contribute to delivering excellent service throughout Food Service Unit operations. Ability to make decisions that lead to appropriate resolution of an issue. Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and those outside the department.
• Teamwork: Collaboration with other food service staff to ensure smooth operations and timely service.
• Stress Management: Ability to handle high-pressure situations, such as changes in assignments and unexpected issues in a correctional food service environment.
• Technical Proficiency: Skilled in effectively using and navigating various computer systems, software applications, and technology tools. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and nutrition management.
• Flexibility: Ability to work a flexible schedule as the Food Service Unit operates 7 days a week from 6:30 am to 7 pm year-round. This position may require you to work evenings, nights, weekends, holidays and/or other shift work.

Additionally, the ideal candidate for the Sheriff’s Office will possess a California Class C or Class A license, have a clean driving record, and be comfortable working alongside incarcerated individuals. Fluency in Spanish, Tagalog, Mandarin, Cantonese, Russian (speak, read, write) is highly desired but not required.
  
Candidates chosen for these positions must successfully pass a background investigation in order to work in a locked facility around incarcerated persons. Felony and misdemeanor convictions may be disqualifying depending on type, number, severity, and recency.  
   
The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office currently has one regular full-time vacancies with additional vacancies expected. The appointment may be made at either the Food Service Worker I or II level, depending on the qualifications of the successful candidate(s) and the needs of the department.
  
As a Food Service Worker with the Sheriff’s Office you will be responsible for:

• Directing the work of incarcerated individuals who are assigned to clean and prepare food or assist in related routine tasks defined by supervisors at specific facilities assisting Cooks in the preparation of meals.
• Driving a large or small truck to deliver food and supplies and maintaining basic records related to vehicle use such as mileage and service reports.
• Preparing food for cooking by peeling, cutting, or slicing.
• Preparing salads, sandwiches, beverages, and simple desserts.
• Setting up tray lines and/or individual trays.
• Maintaining safety and security of equipment and addressing issues that arise.
• Overseeing the activities of the dish room, including ensuring chemicals are ordered, monitoring the PH and temperatures of the equipment, and preparing daily items such as dishes, pots, pans, containers, carts, and equipment.
• Cleaning facilities including sweeping, mopping, and sanitizing work areas such as floors, storage spaces, trucks and emptying garbage cans.
• Assisting with deliverables including signing for, bringing in, and/or storing items.
• Performing basic office tasks such as answering phones, working with computers, and paperwork.
• Following Food Service Unit policy and procedures including arriving to work on time, submitting personal timecard and assisting in following up on requests in a timely matter.
• Performing related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:
 
Food Service Worker I ($30.86 - $34.47 / hourly) is the entry/trainee level position. Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn a full range of Food Service Worker duties. As experience is gained there is greater independence of action within established guidelines. This classification is flexibly staffed with Food Service Worker II and incumbents may advance to the next level after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiencies which meet the higher-level qualifications.
  
Food Service Worker II ($32.50 - $36.35 / hourly) is the journey level position. Under general supervision, incumbents independently perform a variety of responsible food service duties. Incumbents work under specified guidelines and supervisors are available in non-routine circumstances. Specific duties may vary from position to position.
 
Knowledge of:

• Basic kitchen cleaning and sanitation methods.
• Operation and care of kitchen equipment.
• Proper lifting techniques.

Skill/Ability to:

• Prepare simple foods and beverages.
• Interact cooperatively with others including staff, patients, inmates and members of the public.
• Work rapidly under pressure.
• Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Maintain a high standard of personal cleanliness.
• Maintain basic records.
• Direct the work of juvenile detainees or adult inmates assigned to assist in basic food service activities at specific facilities.

Licensure/Certification: Must possess and maintain a current California Food Handler Card for the duration of employment in this classification or obtain card within six (6) months of employment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Signing bonus

ABOUT THE ROLE

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Deputy Director will oversee department-wide administrative operations and strategic initiatives including organizational planning, program performance, budget development, financial accounting, procurement, contracting, human resources, recruitment, and other administrative functions. This role will supervise three staff members in the Operations Division and closely collaborate with other staff to achieve the Commission’s strategic goals.

The Deputy Director must be willing to forego involvement in all local political activity while a member of the Commission staff and publicly file an annual Statement of Economic Interests (Form 700).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Essential duties of the position include, but are not limited to the following:

• Establish and implement departmental goals, policies, and strategic plans as directed by the Executive Director.
• Develop and maintain a broad understanding of the Commission’s laws, policies, programs, procedures, and operations.
• Oversee daily administrative operations of the department including financial management, procurement, accounting, payroll, and related office operations.
• Effectively plan, coordinate, supervise, and evaluate the work of direct reports.

• Maintain information on the Commission’s website, including budget, operational reports, and Commission information, in compliance with the City’s language access and digital inclusion standards.

• Support Commission-related operations including assisting with public meetings and onboarding new Commissioners.
• Act on behalf of the Executive Director when requested to provide business continuity for other programmatic and business functions.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, AND
• Two (2) years of managerial experience in governmental ethics, campaign financing, and/or lobbying laws and regulations, all of which must include supervisory experience.

Substitution: Additional experience as described above may substitute for the required degree on a year for year basis up to a maximum of two (2) years.

Desired Qualifications

• A Master's degree in public administration, business administration, public policy, or a closely related field of study, or a juris doctor degree.

• Two or more years of demonstrated experience with public sector management, budgeting, financial accounting, procurement, contracting, and/or recruitment functions.
• Experience in the fields of campaign finance and governmental ethics.
• Experience working objectively, efficiently, and effectively under strict deadlines and highly visible, sensitive, or politicized settings.

The County of San Mateo is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Equity and Belonging Manager.

The Equity and Belonging Manager will work with the Chief Equity Officer in the development and management of innovative and effective strategies to advance the ORSJ’s vision and day-to-day operations. The work requires considerable initiative and judgment and the ability to make sound recommendations to the Chief Equity Officer and departmental leadership.
 
The Equity and Belonging Manager may provide direct and indirect supervision over lower level supervisory, professional, technical, and clerical employees and contractors.
 
The Equity and Belonging Manager will optimize and support the functions of the ORSJ, which include but are not limited to the following:

• Collaborate with the County’s Chief Equity Officer and other equity-focused staff to normalize and institutionalize the implementation of an equity lens to improve relationships, decision-making, structures, and systems of County operation and delivery of services.
• Consult with and advise management, multi-disciplinary staff, community organizations, providers, external agencies, and other stakeholders on complex matters concerning efforts to advance just and fair governance and improving life outcomes for all populations.
• Sustain and improve the operations of an interdepartmental Core Equity Team and its committees to advance their annual action plans.
• Facilitate community and agency partnerships and learning opportunities across government and community leaders.
• Design, implement, promote, deliver, and evaluate programs and tools designed to advance equity, including staff development, community engagement and partnership, organizational assessments, policy and systems changes, public information, and individual and group trainings.
• Manage the County’s Targeted Strategies: Improving Outcomes for All action plans.
• Shepherd the implementation of the County’s Anchor Institution framework to ensure the success of inclusive procurement, investment, and staffing efforts.  
• Conduct public solicitation processes and develop and monitor contracts.
• Participate in the development and implementation of County goals, objectives, policies, procedures, and priorities.
• Prepare and manage a variety of reports, correspondence, and other written materials, and present reports and studies as necessary. 
• Provide guidance and training to support internal and external partners in the development and delivery of equity programs, policies, and tools, and develop related work plans and training materials as needed.
• Participate in designing and implementing performance measurement plans that help determine the effectiveness of the goals and strategies. 
• Monitor changes in laws, regulations, and technology that may affect County or departmental operations; implement policy and procedural changes as required.
• Select, supervise, train, and evaluate professional, technical, and clerical employees and contractors.
• Perform related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:

• Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in public policy, sociology, education, ethnic studies, public relations, social work, public health, public administration, or a related field, includes trainings and education specific to issues related to racial and social equity. 
• Experience: Five years of experience in the administration of community, public policy, educational, or social and racial justice programs, including at least three years in a supervisory level AND life experience related to interacting with inequitable systems that can provide an integral perspective to the position.

Demonstrated track record of success engaging with underserved and marginalized communities, and experience in making transformational changes to advance equity is required.

 
Knowledge of:

• Theories, principles, and practices of effective management and strategic planning processes and techniques.
• Social, political, economic, and environmental issues influencing issues related to equity.
• Strategies to advance equity in a governmental setting.
• Frameworks promoted by the Government Alliance on Race and Equity
• History of racial inequities and current institutional and systemic factors that maintain, reinforce and/or create inequities. 
• Cultural competencies, cultural humility, and intercultural communication to facilitate dialogue and partnership with diverse groups of community members.

Position Summary

This position operates, services and performs minor to major repairs on construction, bridge maintenance and other equipment used by the District to maintain the Bridge and other District properties.  Performs record keeping and written verification of work accomplished as directed.

 

Essential Responsibilities

•    Operates front end loaders, drawbar graders, asphalt rollers, water pumps, travelling scaffolds, air compressors, backhoes, and other machinery and equipment that the District owns or rents
•    Lubricates, services, and performs minor repairs to a wide variety of machinery and equipment, including portable and stationary air compressors, front end loaders, tractors, standby generators, travelling scaffolds, high pressure pumps, sandblasting equipment, fog horns, air powered lifts, air receiver tanks, air tools, air and electric winches, paint spray equipment, permanent bridge air lines, and other machinery and equipment as required
•    Performs major rebuilding, repair, manufacturing and/or removal replacement of mechanical components on machinery and equipment, including engines, transmissions, gear boxes, planetary drives, clutches, differentials, torque converters, pumps, hydraulic systems, valves, electrical systems and associated parts
•    Operates and refuels portable air compressors, front end loaders, travelling scaffolds, air compressors and equipment and other machinery and equipment that the District owns or rents
•    Responsible for normal and reasonable care of all District owned property, equipment and tools provided.  Adheres to shop and equipment safety and housekeeping practices as required by District policy and agencies such as Cal OSHA and Industrial Safety
•    Assists in training apprentices
•    Knows and follows the safety and health rules and safe working practices applicable to his or her job.
•    Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with District employees, customers, vendors and all others contacted during the course of work using principles of excellent customer service
•    Performs additional related duties as assigned
•    Regular and reliable attendance and performance is required
