ESSENTIAL AND IMPORTANT DUTIES:

• Greet/acknowledge customers who contact the Community Development Department while assessing the nature of issues with appropriate and timely responses.
• Review, process and issue various permits and applications utilizing the City’s permit and project tracking system.
• Provide information concerning various permit and application requirements, codes and inspection procedures to internal and external customers, contractors, design professionals and the public.
• Receive and respond to inquiries from the public, contractors, developers, City employees, and other parties.
• Establish filing systems; maintain records, files, databases, and reference materials; assist with plan/map filing.
• Calculate and collect fees; track applications including researching and resolving billing issues with various parties.
• Prepare a variety of reports, letters, agreements, and other correspondence.
• Prepare and distribute Commission and Committee agenda packets. Attend meetings as needed.
• Post notices and prepare mailings for public hearings on individual properties.
• Schedule building inspections.

ABOUT THE POSITION

DEFINITION 

As a Building Attendant, you will be responsible for the daily upkeep and maintenance of the Burlingame Community Center, ensuring a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for all occupants. This role requires a hands-on individual with excellent attention to detail and strong communication skills.

Hours: (Average 10-20 hours per week). 

Shifts include:
Monday-Friday: 7:30am-12:30pm
Monday-Friday: 2:30pm-9:15pm
Saturday/Sunday: 7:30am-1:15pm
Saturday/Sunday: 12:45pm-5:30pm
As needed: Private rentals as late as 2:00am

Shifts depends on special events and rentals.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  (include but are not limited to the following)
Opens and closes the building, provides excellent customer service, and maintains a clean, safe, and welcoming environment. Performs regular cleaning tasks such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, cleaning windows and mirrors, restocking and sanitizing restrooms, emptying trash and recycling, and wiping down surfaces. Assists with event and class setup and takedown of tables, chairs, and equipment, operates audiovisual equipment, and ensures renters follow facility policies, completing final walk-through reports as needed. Staffs the front desk to greet visitors, answer questions, answer phones, take messages, and process registrations and sales.

KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES/SKILLS:  
Knowledge of: Operation of a community center; department rules and policies; availability of current classes; basic mathematical functions; janitorial work (including but not limited to: glass and wall cleaning, dusting, trash pickup, restroom clean up, emptying of trash cans, cleaning of kitchen, etc.).

Ability to: Work independently, learn quickly, perform heavy manual labor; work extremely well with others, including customers, staff, contractors, and volunteers; explain policies and procedures clearly and concisely; read and understand English;

Education and/or Experience:

If selected for the position, the employee will undergo a full background check, psychological testing, and medical testing. After passing required tests, the employee must commit to attending a 20-week program with the Santa Rosa Junior College Public Safety Training Center. The police academy will be held Monday – Friday and include some nights and weekends. The next academy is January 5 - May 22, 2026. 

Upon graduation, the successful trainee will be transitioned to a Field Training Officer program with the Mill Valley Police Department and promoted to Step 1 Police Officer (probationary) with full benefits. If the employee does not complete and graduate the police academy with a POST academy certificate, they will be released from employment. The applicant may be released at any point they do not pass required testing during the course of the police academy. 

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Police Officer Trainee position enables an incumbent to attend a local law enforcement academy and earn their POST (California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training) certificate of academy completion while enjoying the support and mentorship of our agency, and receiving compensation. The City of Foster City is actively seeking a dedicated and responsible individual to join our team as a Building Services Assistant. In this role, you will provide physical set-up arrangements for classes, meetings, activities for public and private functions in the community buildings; assure security of buildings; and providing public information about recreation activities. This is a part-time, non-benefited position.

Education and Training Guidelines
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way would be: 

• Education: Completion of the tenth grade or equivalent.
• Experience: Providing public services, information or directions; or performing group function arrangements or coordination is desirable.

Participates in the development of policies and procedures; develops and recommends programs and projects to higher level personnel.

Participates in the selection and training of personnel; assumes responsibility for motivating and evaluating assigned personnel; provides necessary training; initiates discipline procedures as is appropriate.

Assists with the preparation and development of the budget; monitors approved funds and tracks expenditures to support accurate financial management; Prepares budget reports and recommends adjustments as needed; maintains supply inventories and supply and budgetary records; prepares requisitions and orders needed materials, parts and equipment.

Establishes positive working relationships with representatives of community organizations, state/local agencies and associations, City management and staff and the public.

Must be available to occasionally work evenings and weekend hours and/or respond to emergencies.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Graduation from high school or equivalent, and at least five (5) years of municipal code enforcement experience with at least one (1) year in a lead or senior role. Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in planning, construction technology or a related field may be substituted for two (2) years of the experience requirement. Building inspection experience is highly desirable.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATE

Possession of and the ability to maintain a valid California Class C driver's license and a safe driving record. Certification from CACEO (California Association of Code Enforcement Officers) or similar organization is preferred or must be obtained within one year of appointment.
Possession of an I.C.B.O.
Building Inspection certificate (or other similar
professional certification) is desirable and may be substituted for two years of the
required experience. Penal Code 832 certification is also desirable.
