NOTE: This is a part-time, non-benefitted position with the Mill Valley Arts and Recreation Department starting in September 2026. Approximately 15-20 hours per week; must not exceed 1000 hours in the fiscal year. 

DEFINITION: Under general supervision from Preschool Instructor(s) and the Recreation Supervisor, the preschool aide assists in planning, organizing, and implementing preschool programming for children ages 2-5 years old in a range of classes from introductory drop-off preschool classes to Kindergarten preparedness preschool classes. Program hours are M-F PM 8:30am – 1:00pm. Approximately 20– 23 hours a week. Preschool aides must be willing and able to both take direction from the Preschool Instructor and work independently when fulfilling tasks. Substitute and on-call positions also available.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

• Assists in the development, coordination, planning, implementing and supervising the day-to-day activities, themes and special events for an ongoing preschool program.

• Create and maintain a safe, nurturing, and creative environment.

• Supervise and engage preschool students during preschool program hours.

• Demonstrate excellent customer service and communicate effectively with co-workers, parents, and children.

• Maintain registration, attendance, and activity records; ensure the proper pick-up/drop-off of children. 

• Encourage good behavior, appropriate manners, read books and engage with all preschool students. 

• Implement and lead appropriate activities for preschool-aged children.

• Possess strong leadership skills in one or more of the following areas: art, crafts, sports, drama, cooking.

• Motivate children by example; create and maintain a positive environment for all. 

• Must be a team player and have the ability to work independently with minimum supervision.

• Practice proper hygiene, with self and children, to deter the spread of disease (colds, flu, etc).

• Render first aid in case of minor injuries.

The San Rafael Public Works Department (DPW) is committed to providing the highest standards of service delivery to its citizens as it works to build, maintain, and update the City's civic infrastructure.  Public Works is comprised of approximately 50 employees with a general budget of $33 million and a Capital Improvement Program (CIP) budget that ranges between $15-$30 million depending on the City's annual infrastructure needs.

Its mission is to ensure San Rafael's infrastructure meets the needs of a vibrant and growing city through careful management of major improvements and the maintenance of the City's assets.  By hiring trained, dedicated, responsive, and service-oriented personnel, DPW is actively making its mission a reality.

THE POSITION

The Parks Maintenance Worker I/II performs a variety of tasks involving the maintenance, repair, improvement, and cleaning of parks, park buildings, recreation facilities, and related areas.  We currently  have three (3) vacancies to fill at either the I or II level.

We are seeking a skilled parks maintenance professionals with experience in landscaping, irrigation, and groundskeeping.  The ideal candidate can operate equipment, perform routine maintenance and repairs, and is knowledgeable in plant care and safe work practices while working effectively in a team.

• Three (3) years of work experience involving groundskeeping.

                                     POSITION DETAILS:

• Salary range $46.39 - $60.09 hourly with Excellent Benefits 
  • 5% Cost of Living Adjustment increase effective 6/29/26
• Educational Incentive:
  • Bachelor’s degree: 5% salary increase

  • Associate degree: 2.5% salary increase

• POST Certification Incentives:
  • Intermediate POST: 3% increase

• Work Schedule: 4/10 (Four 10-hour shifts)

                             MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education/Training: 

• Equivalent to graduation from an accredited U.S. high school OR passing score on the General Education Development (GED) test; OR Possession of a two-year, four-year, or advanced degree from an accredited college or university.
• College coursework in police science, criminal justice, or a related field is desirable.

Experience: 

• Completion of a P.O.S.T.-certified training academy.

License or Certificate: 

• Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
• Possession of a California Basic P.O.S.T. certificate within one year of employment.

Special Requirements:

• Must be 21 years of age as of the date of hire.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

Physical Agility Examination

• Phase I Includes:
  • 99 Yard Obstacle Course (time limit 25 seconds)
  • Body Drag (165 pounds) (time limit 14 seconds)
  • Chain Link Fence (time limit 10 seconds)
  • Solid Fence (time limit 13.5 seconds)
  • One Mile Run (time limit 10 minutes)
• Phase II: For candidates progressing to the Chief’s Oral Interview process
  • 1.5 Mile Run (time limit 15 minutes)
  • 15 Military Style Push-ups without stopping

Comprehensive Background Investigation

• Includes:
