The Department  

The Department of Economic and Community Development includes four divisions that support the physical and economic well-being of South San Francisco:

• Planning – Long-range planning, development review, and zoning administration.
• Building – Enforces building codes and conducts construction inspections.
• Housing – Manages affordable housing programs and housing policy.
• Economic Development – Supports small businesses and promotes economic growth.

THE POSITION

• This position will work specifically in the Economic Development Division.
• Approximately 15 hours per week, with flexibility depending on outside commitments.
• Availability to support some upcoming events scheduled during occasional weekday late afternoons or evenings.
• The duration of this position is for six months from the date of hire, with the ability to extend based on performance.

TYPICAL DUTIES (may include but are not limited to the following):

• Assists the Division with promotions, and marketing programs that support local businesses.
• Assists the Division with City communications, including email campaigns, social media, and flyer distribution.
• Supports the Division with upcoming events hosted by the City and its economic development partners. Upcoming events include, but are not limited to, the Biotech and Beyond Speaker Series, business workshops both in-person and virtual, community events, and night markets. Support may include event planning, outreach, logistics, and day of planning and support, as needed.
• Assists the Division with implementation of some of Skyline College’s Accelerate Fellowship Program past projects that support downtown revitalization, and business support initiatives.
• Assists the Division with planning event logistics including budgets, timelines, and staffing plans. This also includes onsite coordination of events, including set-up, and clean-up.
• The Economic Development Intern may also support occasional follow up reports needed to show performance metrics from events implemented by the Division.
• General administrative support, as needed.
• This position may occasionally work at either City Hall (400 Grand Avenue) or the Economic Advancement Center (366 Grand Avenue) both in South San Francisco. Events and meetings coordinated by the Division take place all within the City of South San Francisco.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Education:
Applicants must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate student at an accredited community college. Coursework in communications, public administration, business, marketing, community development, or a related field is desirable.

This role is offered on a limited-term basis and is currently budgeted through June 30, 2027.  It is possible that the position will be extended beyond this date, but that will not be known until the Spring of 2027.  This position offers a meaningful opportunity to help uphold community standards and ensure compliant neighborhoods. The Code Enforcement Officer will respond to citizen concerns and proactively identify violations such as property maintenance issues, and zoning infractions. You will educate the public on code requirements through clear and respectful communication and work collaboratively with other city departments and external agencies to resolve issues. The Code Enforcement Officer is distinguished from the Supervisor by performing work of moderate difficulty and more routine tasks and duties assigned to this position within this classification series. These tasks involve inspections and enforcement of applicable ordinances pertaining to residential and commercial properties, housing, building construction, and other related regulations. Additionally, the Code Enforcement Officer will issue notices, citations, and follow up on compliance efforts in a fair and consistent manner. It is also imperative that the Code Enforcement Officer maintain accurate case files and documentation for possible legal proceedings.

This application is for non-benefited, part-time employment only. The candidate will fill staffing vacancies as needed and will be required to work days, evenings, weekends and/or holidays. Schedule may vary and incumbent must be available to work flexible hours.

Ideal Candidate

The City of Burlingame is accepting applications for a part-time, 18 hours per week Library Aide.  Must be available to work a schedule that includes combination of day, evening and weekend shifts.  Must be able to work one evening and one weekend day per week. 

The Library Aide performs various routine and repetitive tasks relating to the maintenance of the library collection. Duties include shelving, sorting, filing and shifting of books, periodicals and other library materials. Maintains library reading rooms, stacks and other areas in clean order. Library Aides may process materials returned from circulation, including checking in the daily delivery on the computer system and moving boxes of books and other materials. May be asked to back up Circulation staff and assist in a variety of special projects and services as needed. Library Aides work in all divisions of the Library, including Circulation, Children's, Technical Services, Reference and the Easton Branch.

ABILITY TO:

Communicate and interact effectively and cooperatively with employees and library users of all ages; work under pressure of heavy service demands; be flexible in work scheduling; work as part of a team; remain calm when dealing with difficult situations and difficult people, handling situations with tact and firmness. Ability to stoop, bend and crouch to retrieve materials and books; lift books or other materials weighing up to 40 pounds; sit, stand and walk for long periods of time; push a fully loaded book truck; climb stairs. Hear and see well enough to perform the above duties.

SALARY & BENEFITS:

The salary range for this position is $18.60-$25.14 per hour. This position is a temporary, part-time position and part of   Healthy Workplaces/Healthy Families Act: California Paid Sick Leave Benefit, as amended effective 1/1/2024. This benefit accrues at the rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked and is available after 90 days of employment. The maximum use of paid sick leave is 40 hours in a one-year period.  There is no cash value associated with benefit. There is no guarantee of hours and employment may end at any time. This position is at will and is not part of the City's Civil Service System.
