About the Department

The Department of Public Works is responsible for delivering capital improvement projects for a wide variety of City facilities and infrastructure, maintaining City facilities and fleet assets, facilitating and regulating development activities, and providing animal care and services. Position Duties

Salary range for this classification is $168,495.60 - $205,252.32 annually. This range includes an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable pay. Actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates’ qualifications and experience.
 
The City of San Jose, Animal Care and Services Division is seeking Veterinarians to work at the Animal Care Center with part-time, and/or relief in either/or, shelter medicine and/or the shelter’s public high quality, high volume spay/neuter clinic. The Animal Shelter Veterinarian may perform all aspects of shelter medicine in a large animal shelter. Duties may include routine spay/neuter surgeries on cats, dogs, and other animals as indicated. This position provides direct care and treatment of homeless animals entering the City of San Jose’s Animal Care Center.
 
In addition, this position is required to diagnose, treat, and/or recommend euthanasia. Registered Veterinary Technicians will be assigned to assist this position with the preparation and post-surgery processes of spay/neuter and other surgical procedures. This is a position reporting to the Shelter Manager of Animal Care and Services. This classification is represented by City Association of Management Personnel (CAMP).

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

•  Directs, coordinates and performs the screening, diagnosis, and basic and emergency medical treatment of animals in the shelter.
•  Performs or supervises the visual monitoring of impounded animals, including those that may be isolated or quarantined for signs of illness or unusual behavior.
•  Performs surgical procedures, including spay/neuters and vaccinates animals to prevent diseases. 
•  Maintains accurate medical records of animals.
•  Effectively communicates the condition and status of animals with staff, public and animal groups. 
•  Advises staff on matters within the veterinary field.
•  Orders, maintains and controls the drugs used at the shelter and in the field.
• Trains appropriate staff in administering first aide and vaccinations to animals, the performance of euthanasia and other paramedical duties.
• Performs and directs staff to perform euthanasia of animals that are irremediably suffering from serious illness or severe injury, as necessary
• Ensures that shelter staff participates in a comprehensive disease prevention program for the animal shelter. 
• Participates in special spay/neuter or vaccination clinics.
• Supervises staff to include: prioritizing and assigning work; providing technical guidance to staff; ensuring staff are trained; and making hiring, termination and disciplinary recommendations.
• Ensures compliance of activities to codes and all legal regulations.

Physical Requirements:
Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects up to 50 pounds while handling animals and equipment. Employees may be exposed to cold and hot temperatures, loud noises, odors, dust, air contaminants, blood borne pathogens while using hypodermic needles on animals and may be exposed to animal scratches and bites.

Overview:

The Plant/Pipeline Mechanical Technician II will perform maintenance and repair functions on industrial equipment used in water treatment, recycled water, water purification plants, pumping stations, and hydroelectric plants. This position will also work on related mechanical equipment components used for water treatment, storage, distribution, and flood control. They will be required to perform maintenance and repair duties on water conduits and equipment. As well as performing a variety of tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility. This position will be assigned to work at one of Valley Water’s three water treatment plants in Santa Clara County and can be assigned to work rotating on-call weekends after approximately 1-2 years.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on domestic treated water, recycled water purification, pipeline systems; maintain water conduits and equipment including vacuum breakers, air releases, and water valves; perform confined space related duties.
• Read and interpret plans and specifications; estimate labor and materials for proposed work, perform work in accordance with these documents; make preliminary sketches of work to be performed or completed; locate, examine, clarify, identify, record and mark locations of creeks, pipelines, telemetry, test cables, and underground cables. 
• Diagnose mechanical problems; recommend preventative or corrective repair; make estimates of labor, materials, and supplies required to complete assigned work; request required materials.
• Maintain records of work performed; enter and retrieve data from a Computerized Maintenance Management system (CMMS); ensure proper completion of reports including confined entry documentation.
• Operate a variety of hand tools and power equipment including welding equipment, lathes, drill presses, sanders, trucks, forklifts, boom lift, scissor lifts, and overhead cranes.

Ideal Experience:

One (1) year of post-apprenticeship experience in the maintenance of mechanical equipment and components. In lieu of completing an apprenticeship, a candidate should possess four (4) years of journey-level experience in the maintenance of mechanical equipment and components.

Ideal Skills and Abilities:

• Operate a variety of mechanical maintenance equipment.
• Read, interpret, and work from plans, drawings, and specifications.
• Procedures to maintain records of work performed.
• Diagnose operational problems in mechanical equipment and recommend corrective action.
• Perform the most complex maintenance and repair functions on District water treatment and distribution systems.
• Perform mechanical maintenance on pipelines, equipment in pumping stations, hydroelectric plants, and water treatment plants.
• Estimate labor and materials required to correct mechanical problems.
• Prepare clear and concise reports.
• Use common desktop applications and software.

Ideal Knowledge:

• Methods and techniques involved in the maintenance and repair of water treatment and distribution and systems including pumps, valves, gauges, and chemical feeds.
• Operations, services, and activities of a mechanical maintenance program.
• Operational characteristics of mechanical maintenance equipment and tools.
• Operational methods and techniques associated with water treatment process.
• Occupational hazards and standard safety practices including Cal OSHA practices.

Ideal Training and Education:

Must have equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.

Required License or Certificate:

The position will focus on Risk Mitigation as well as Identity & Access Management with exposure and support on all aspects of the Cybersecurity practice, including cross-support.

Salary Information: The final candidate's qualifications and experience shall determine the actual salary. The incumbent will be a part of a cohesive team of 15 in the Natural Resources Department, which is comprised of three Programs: Wildlife, Vegetation, and Earth Sciences. About the Position: The Wildlife Ecologist III will co-lead Midpen’s natural resource permitting program for capital and routine maintenance with their counterpart in the Earth Sciences Program.  This position is responsible for negotiating, administering and overseeing compliance with regulatory permits; reviewing documents and other work products prepared by consultants or District staff as needed to satisfy permit application or reporting requirements; obtaining wildlife (Endangered Species Act) permits and overseeing permit compliance for capital projects and routine maintenance; generating reports for submittal to regulatory agencies; and coordinating with regulatory agency staff on permitting and compliance.  General responsibilities of this position will also include managing consultants and contractors; managing wildlife habitat restoration or enhancement projects; writing detailed technical summaries and reports for District staff and the public; and conducting surveys in the field.

 

The Wildlife Ecologist III has broad technical experience in wildlife and habitat management, is self-directed, and works independently managing complex large-scale projects. The ideal candidate will have knowledge and experience in: negotiating and securing permits (ideally programmatic permits) from regulatory agencies primarily California Department of Fish and Wildlife and US Fish and Wildlife Service but may include US Army Corps of Engineers or Regional Water Quality Control Board; overseeing sensitive status species monitoring, reporting and recovery efforts; land stewardship and environmental planning; data collection, analysis, and interpretation; GIS software or online platforms; preparation of clear and concise reports; developing and maintaining records for regulatory agency permits; and managing consultants and contractors. Knowledge of CEQA is desired but not required.

 

The Ideal Candidate:

• Possesses a broad breadth of understanding of wildlife management for wide ranging taxa from large megafauna to micro invertebrates

• Experience in negotiating and securing permits (ideally programmatic permits) from regulatory agencies primarily California Department of Fish and Wildlife and US Fish and Wildlife Service but may include US Army Corps of Engineers or Regional Water Quality Control Board.
• Experience overseeing sensitive status species monitoring, reporting and recovery efforts
• Is a creative thinker, problem solver and able to juggle competing priorities
• Strong background in project management, from developing project scopes, schedules and budgets to consultant and contract oversight
• Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team to deliver capital projects, and public access projects, while avoiding or minimizing impacts to sensitive natural resources
• Assists staff in designing projects to reduce the need for mitigation, understands mitigation monitoring and reporting, and works creatively to secure mitigation when needed
• Ability to develop and maintain relationships with partner agencies, environmental advocacy groups, scientists and researchers, as well as other staff, boards, volunteers, vendors and the general public
• Strong public speaking skills

Work Environment: The Wildlife Ecologist III functions within a team environment with other Resource Management staff. • equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in watershed science/management, hydrology, water law policy, engineering, ecology, biology, earth sciences or other closely related subject, and
• three years increasingly responsible experience in the field of resource planning and management, including at least one year of supervisory and administrative responsibility. Requires excellent organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
• A master’s degree is desirable.

The City of San José , Public Works Department is seeking to fill five ( 5 ) full- time Electrician vacancies . The department's tight-kn i t team of E lectrician s work collabo ra tively and intra-departmentally to ensure electrical components and systems are installed and m aintained throughout city facilities such as community centers, l ibraries and public park s.

Electrician I is the entry-level class in the Electrician series. Incumbents are provided with training and experience to develop the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the full range of installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems and equipment.

Electrician II is the journey level class in the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical systems and equipment, working independently under general supervision.

Electricians are responsible for installing, maintaining , testing, troubleshooting, repairing, and operating high and low voltage/amperage electrical components, systems and equipment including locating problems; determining appropriate courses of action; and coordinating repairs with affected parties. They design, fabricate, and install electrical systems and components and install wiring and electrical equipment, ensuring code compliance. Electricians review work orders, maintain activity logs, prepare requisitions and obtain approval for various projects. Duties may also include purchasing electrical supplies, including filling out paperwork; coordinating purchases; and, choosing vendors. They are responsible for responding to occasional emergencies, evaluating and taking required actions and determining if support is needed. Public Works electrician duties also include:

 

• N ew construction, remodels, small tenant improvement projects ;
• L ighting retrofit projects ;
• M aintenance of pump stations (includes motor controls and PLC's and computerized alarm and monitoring of pumps, etc. ) ;

• I nstalling cat 5 and fiber optic networks and maintenance of all City buildings ; and

Hourly Rate: $20.30-$24.67

Part-time positions: up to 28 hours per week (may include evening and/or weekend hours)

Locations: Multiple positions at Community Centers (including Conejo Community, Goebel Adult, Old Meadows and Teen Centers).

Summary:
Under general supervision, coordinates, conducts and participates in the delivery of recreational program activities and executes day-to-day operations in assigned units according to established programs, schedules and standards; and performs other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience:

About the Position:  The Farm Maintenance Worker performs general maintenance and construction tasks at Deer Hollow Farm in the Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve and reports to the Maintenance Supervisor. Deer Hollow Farm is an educational, working farm with cows, pigs, goats, sheep, chickens, and other livestock.  Duties include performing maintenance and construction tasks using hand and power tools, operating and maintaining Farm vehicles, and assisting with daily Farm operations. The Farm Maintenance Worker will also assist with basic support and care of animals; greet visitors and provide information to the public; and work with volunteers on farm-related projects. Position Duties

 

The San José Fire Department (SJFD) is seeking to fill multiple Senior Public Safety Dispatcher positions in the Communications Division.  

 

Senior Public Safety Dispatchers (Senior PSDs) are responsible for supervising a team of Public Safety Radio Dispatchers (PSRDs) assigned to a shift in the Communications Center.  PSRD is the journey-level class for public safety dispatching within the City of San José wherein incumbents are required to handle the full range of telephone answering and dispatch functions.

 

Responsibilities of the Senior PSD include, but are not limited to the following:

 

• Supervising PSRDs, including approving time-off and other scheduling requests in accordance with the established guidelines.
• Assigning PSRDs to work the various dispatch positions within the Communications Center. 
• Conducting training sessions and drills to maintain the efficiency and coordination of their assigned team. 
• Evaluating the performance of team members and giving frequent feedback to subordinates.
• Preparing written training evaluations and performance appraisals.
• Investigating and responding to resident, department, and allied agency concerns or complaints.
• Coordinating with Chief Officers in the field regarding matters affecting department operations.
• Performing additional support tasks when assigned to an administrative role in the Operations Unit, Training Unit, Quality Improvement Unit, or Systems Support Unit. 
• Performing all duties of the PSRD classification.
