WORK SCHEDULE 

The Internship is for 11 weeks and can start as early as May 26, 2026, and end as late as September 30, 2026. This paid internship is offered at 32 hours per week. The official start and end date of the internship will be determined at the time of hire. Work hours are generally Monday – Thursday between 8:00am – 5:00pm. 

 

WHAT YOU’LL DO: 

• Assist Planning with Greenhouse Gas Reduction/Climate Action Plan, including research and community outreach
• Capture project photos for department’s year-end video 
• Create a housing portfolio of Below Market Rate (BMR) properties for office use 
• Support the Building Division by developing permit examples for website 
• Assist Fire Prevention with entering firework code cases and processing booth permits
• Research and collect data for Public Records Act (PRA) requests

• Grant Funding Research for Housing and Community Services Division

The Department: 

The Santa Clara City Library is a department of the City and has positioned itself as a dynamic community hub, providing access to information, literacy resources, educational programming, and promotes civic engagement in Santa Clara. The Library Department is organized into seven divisions: Administration, Adult Services, Branch Services, Customer Services, Facilities, Technical and Technology Services and Youth Services. Santa Clara City Library has recently finalized and is in the ongoing process of implementing its new Strategic and Facilities Master Plans that will support the direction of future library services.

 

The Position: 

This is an entry-level, as-needed position, requiring no previous training or experience.  After training, a Library Page is assigned routine tasks and duties, and works under direct supervision. Duties include manual work in connection with the use and maintenance of library resources such as checking in and shelving library materials and assisting with meeting room setup. This position may also assist in supporting library programs and services, as well as helping to create a welcoming environment at the library.   

 

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively within a team while also being able to work independently. Strong communication skills, a commitment to excellent customer service, comfort with basic technology, and adaptability in a fast-paced public service environment are essential. Candidate should be someone who is approachable, dependable, and open to working in varied library locations. This recruitment is to fill multiple positions at Central Park and Northside Branch libraries.

 

As an as-needed employee, this is an "at-will" position and there is no guarantee of hours. Hours are limited to 999 in a fiscal year or 960 hours in a fiscal year for retired CalPERS annuitants.

The Combination Building Inspector I/II plays a crucial role in protecting public health, safety, and welfare by reviewing construction projects to ensure compliance with minimum standards. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Reads and interprets plans and specifications for inspection on commercial, industrial and residential buildings. Performs pre-construction inspections on complex permits to get familiarized with the project milestones and establish communication channels with the contractor and the design team. 
• Participates in the development of policies and procedures; recommends programs and projects to the inspector supervisor and the inspection team.

• Operates various equipment involved in the maintenance of golf courses.
• Operates a light tractor with gang or sickle mower attachment, small roller or comparable attachment.
• Operates light equipment such as mowers, aerators, spray rigs, utility vehicles, backhoes, front-end loaders and dump trucks.
• Prunes small trees and shrubs
• Edges ground cover.
• Repairs irrigation, installs plant material, performs landscape construction duties.

General:

• Operates various equipment involved in the maintenance of street, sanitary sewers, storm sewers, water distribution system, parks, street trees, or golf course.
• Operates equipment such as air compressors, pneumatic hammers, power activated hammers, chain saws, concrete saws, pipe cutters, sprayers, compactors, forklifts, painting and spraying equipment and rollers.
• Operates power tools such as air compressors, jack hammers, wet tapping machines and painting and spraying equipment;
• Loads, unloads and operates pick-ups and trucks to transport maintenance supplies and materials.
• Places traffic control flags, signs and cones to direct traffic around work sites; may direct traffic.
• Uses general carpentry and mechanical hand tools such as brooms, rakes, shovels, ladders, hammers, screwdrivers, pliers, saws, drills and wrenches.
• Performs routine maintenance and repair of hand and power tools.
• Tactfully responds to questions and comments from the public.
• Responsible for the safe operation of equipment and tools used.
• May prepare and keep written records and make material and equipment requests.
• May perform some tasks regularly assigned to senior level classes, particularly on a training basis.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Position requires sitting, standing, walking on level, uneven and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movements in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when operating assigned equipment. Acute hearing is required in both the field and the office. The ability to lift, carry and push tools, equipment and supplies weighing up to 70 pounds, such as a jackhammer, is also required. Additionally, the incumbent in this outdoor position works in all weather conditions, including wet, heat, and cold. The incumbent may be exposed to fumes, dust chemicals, biohazard materials and air contaminants. The nature of the work may also require the incumbent to climb ladders, use power and noise producing tools and equipment, work in confined spaces, drive motorized vehicles and work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions. Some of these requirements may be accommodated for otherwise qualified individuals requiring and requesting such accommodations.

The base salary for this classification includes pay for potentially hazardous duties as listed in the essential job functions.

Two years of maintenance experience equivalent to the level of Maintenance Worker I.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: 

• The basic techniques, equipment and materials used in the maintenance of water systems, sewers and/or streets, as required by the program to which assigned.
• The safety procedures for operating equipment and power tools.
• The proper use and care of common hand tools.
• Work practices governing the maintenance and construction of municipal facilities such as streets, sewers, water lines, golf courses, and landscaped areas;
• Landscaped maintenance practices

Ability to: 

• Work effectively alone and as a member of a crew.
• Operate a dump truck or like mover vehicles requiring comparable skills.

DESCRIPTION 

We are seeking a collaborative, service-oriented individual to conduct a variety of code compliance duties with competence and professionalism. The Code Compliance Officer I/II will be responsible for conducting inspections and investigations pertaining to violations of the municipal code provisions in zoning ordinances, sanitary regulations, business license regulations, building standards and nuisance abatement ordinances.  The Code Compliance Officer I/II must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, be self-directed, exercise discretion, and excellent judgment.
