The Redwood City Fire Department is seeking individuals for the position of Cadet Firefighter. The Cadet Firefighter Program is designed to allow students an opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge of fire department operations. Fire Department Cadets spend a minimum of 48 hours and a maximum of 96 hours per month at the firehouse, participating in calls for service, station duties, and training. Cadets will also be expected to attend department-sponsored community functions outside of their 96-hour monthly commitment. Though the goal is to immerse the cadet into all aspects of fire department life, they are not allowed to participate in situations deemed Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health (IDLH).

The San Mateo Public Library is seeking a part-time (20 hours per week) Library Assistant I/II  in the Children Services Division at the Main Library The Library Assistant I/II works closely with the Supervising Librarian and the four merit Children’s Librarians to prepare and implement Children’s programs and services. What You'll Do

The Library Assistant I/II performs a wide variety of library support work and technical library tasks related to such activities as acquisition, cataloging, classification, circulation, and assisting patrons; and performs related work as required.  The current vacancy may be filled at either level based on experience.  Depending upon class level and assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Prepare print and non-print materials for introduction into the library materials collection, including use of an automated system to retrieve cataloging data and produce catalog cards; preparing and affixing identification labels and pockets to materials; pull discarded materials from catalog card files.
• Assign routine tasks and provide technical instruction to part time and other subordinate positions in area of responsibility.
• Assist in the acquisition, processing and maintenance of the periodical, microform, audio visual, business, historical, or other special collection for the library.
• Assist adults and children in locating materials in the library and in placing requests for materials not available.  Refer more difficult or technical questions to appropriate library staff.
• Handle patron complaints for overdue and lost materials; refer delinquent accounts to an agency for collection.
• Maintain statistics of library use; use computer produced and manual data to prepare reports on circulation processing, inquiries received and other activities.
• Assist in ordering and receiving books, records, cassettes, periodicals, and other library materials and preparing associated paperwork for payment.
• Perform routine clerical assignments, including typing, maintaining files, and routing mail.
• Use a microcomputer or the City's mainframe system for word processing, data file management, and statistical record keeping.
• Process incoming and outgoing interlibrary loan requests; receive and send requests via computer as well as by mail; verify requests for accuracy.
• Provide story hours to children and participate in other programs for children and young adults.
• Prepare and maintain displays and exhibits; develop artwork for publicity materials.
• Recruit and keep records of the work of volunteers in the library; screen potential volunteers and direct to appropriate library division for assignment.
• Assist and advise outreach volunteers and serve as library liaison to Peninsula Library System Outreach Service in the City of San Mateo.
• Check out library materials to patrons; check in and prepare materials for return to the circulating collection; register new patrons; collect overdue fines.
• Respond to patron in person and telephone requests for library materials, services, and information.

The Library Assistant I/II receives direction from higher level personnel.  The Library Assistant II may provide technical supervision over lower-level library positions.

POSITION

The City of Daly City is looking for people interested in working 10-20 hours per week in a variety of settings selected by the Department of Library and Recreation Services. Our current openings are in the Recreation Division and may be in the areas of the Afterschool Youth Recreation Program, Aquatics Program or Facility Attendant. This position will report directly to the Recreation Program Coordinator or Recreation Program Supervisor and will work various hours throughout the week, including evenings and weekends

DEFINITION

Under direct supervision, a Recreator I performs assigned tasks which serve the public use of municipal recreation facilities and performs other related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Open and close facilities following established guidelines, set up equipment needed for facility programs, perform routine maintenance and clean up for assigned facilities, collect fees for facility use, maintain order and discipline in assigned facilities and programs by enforcing City and Departmental policies, may assist in assigned program areas, may supervise volunteers or court workers as assigned, and maintain accurate records and reports.  May include specific assignments such as cashiering, attending to locker rooms, aiding with swim instruction, staffing facilities used by the public, and assisting with recreational programming.  Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of: General facility operations, basic lesson instruction techniques for an assigned area, and safety practices for assigned programs.

Ability to: Follow written and oral instructions, meet and communicate effectively with members of the public, and carry out assignments requiring average physical strength such as setting up tables and chairs.  Learn and progress in this position, direct others, understand and enforce written and oral rules, regulations and policies, solve minor disciplinary problems, interact positively and cooperate with co-workers, respond politely to customers, work as a team member, function under demanding time pressure, respond in a positive manner to supervision, and attend work and perform duties on a regular and consistent basis.

The Department

The South San Francisco Public Library is a full-service library committed to delivering quality services to a diverse community.  Library services are available at three sites, including the Main Library (901 Civic Campus Way), the Grand Avenue Library (306 Walnut Avenue) and the Gene Mullin Community Learning Center (520 Tamarack Lane).  Lifelong literacy services are provided by Project Read at the Main Library and the Gene Mullin Community Learning Center (GMCLC).  The City currently has one opening in this classification, for a position providing programs and services at the GMCLC.

The Department

The Parks and Recreation Department is the third largest department in the City and is organized by program area, with each program administered by a supervisor, coordinator, or specialist. The Parks and Recreation Department mission is to provide opportunities for physical, cultural and social well being; protect and enhance the physical environment; and ensure the effective and efficient use of public facilities and open space.

The Position 

Under direct supervision of the Natural Resources Specialist and general supervision of the Parks Supervisor and/or Parks Program Manager, the Natural Resources Aide performs a variety of tasks and maintenance activities, including the removal of invasive plants, installation of native plants, trail repair, erosion control, and other related duties as assigned.

This entry-level classification will perform maintenance and labor tasks in support of habitat management and restoration activities under the Sign Hill Habitat Restoration Project. Work may be performed independently or as a member of a crew. Depending upon assignment, work is performed under close to general supervision. Work is reviewed while in progress and by the results achieved. Incumbents may provide limited work direction to temporary or volunteer workers.

The Position
Under general or direct supervision, performs a wide variety of law enforcement duties involving crime prevention and investigation, protection of life and property, and enforcement of laws, codes, and ordinances; performs investigation duties, assists in the preparation of cases and testifies in court; cooperates with other law enforcement agencies and City departments; may provide lead direction for subordinate departmental employees and volunteers; provides information and assistance to the public; and performs related duties as assigned.

Community Oriented Policing
The Foster City Police Department is centered on the philosophy of Community Oriented Policing. There is an expectation that all employees will provide excellent service to the public, every call, every contact, every day. As with all employees, the Police Corporal is expected to make non-enforcement contacts with the public in an effort to more clearly identify the needs of the community, and to assist the public in solving community problems. 

Class Characteristics
This is a lead-level class in the sworn officer series responsible for performing a wide variety of law enforcement tasks in support of a municipal police department. Incumbents perform the full range of duties as assigned, working independently, and exercising judgment and initiative. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. This class is distinguished from Police Sergeant in that the latter exercises technical and functional direction over and provides training to lower-level staff on an assigned shift.

Education and Experience
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade; successful completion of 30 semester units of college course work at an accredited institution.  An Associate's degree or higher is desirable. The minimum education requirements may be met by the possession of an Intermediate Post Certificate.

Experience: Possession of a POST Basic Certificate at the time of application. 

Licenses and Certifications:

• Possession of a valid California Driver’s License, and a good driving record, to be maintained
  throughout employment.
• Possession of a valid Basic Certificate issued by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST). 
• Possession and maintenance of firearms qualification.

Selection Process
Applications will be reviewed for relevant education, experience, training and other job related qualifications. Based upon a review of employment applications and supplemental questionnaires received, a limited number of the qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the examination process. 

The process will consist of four Oral Panel Interview (Technical - weighted 30%; Tactical - weighted 30%; Community - weighted 30%; and Presentation - weighted 10%). An eligibility list will be established from those who pass the examination process with a score of 80% or higher. Current and future vacancies may be filled from this list. The list will remain in effect for at least one year unless exhausted sooner. 

The department will invite the most qualified candidates from the eligibility list to a final department interview. The Police department will make the hiring decision.

The Position

The City of South San Francisco seeks customer service-oriented individuals to join the Community Resource Team at the new Library | Parks and Recreation Center. This position is shared between the Library Department and Parks and Recreation Department and works under the direction of the Community Resource Analyst. The Community Resource Clerk will typically be stationed at the lobby desks on the first and second floors of the new Library | Parks and Recreation Center at 901 Civic Campus Way in South San Francisco, however, may temporarily be assigned to other sites, or to represent the departments at special events. This position will provide a welcoming presence by greeting members of the public and responding to visitor inquiries to assist with wayfinding in the facility and sharing information about activities in the building as well as city and other local community resources.

Definition: Under supervision, to provide facility support to recreation programs, activities or services; understands and adheres to facility policies and procedures; and performs related work as required.  This temporary part-time non-benefited position works an average of 5 - 25 hours per week during the program year.  Available shifts are Saturday and/or Sunday afternoons/evenings.

Essential Duties:  Depending upon assignment, the duties of a Facility Attendant - Recreation Leader I, II or III may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Organizes, inventories and maintains necessary facilities and materials.
• Open, close, and secure recreation facilities.
• Set up and tear down tables and chairs.
• Follow set-up directions specific to each activity and event.
• Maintains group and individual discipline, and code of conduct.
• Perform light maintenance to maintain equipment, rooms, and the overall appearance of the facility and picnic rental sites

Recreation Leader II:  Current enrollment in high school, with minimum age of 16 at time of appointment.  Equivalent to three (3) months of full-time experience (approximately 500 hours) of volunteer or paid work experience in recreation programs or equivalent. Depending on area of assignment, previous knowledge of and experience participating in the activity and/or sport is desirable. 

Recreation Leader III:  Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12) grade.  Equivalent to six (6) months full-time experience (approximately 1,000 hours) of volunteer or paid work experience equivalent to a Recreation Leader II with the City of Millbrae. Depending on area of assignment, previous knowledge of and experience participating in the activity and/or sport is desirable.

Certificates:  Must possess a first aid/CPR certification or be willing to obtain one. 

Service Standards:  

Must successfully complete background process.  All candidates will be fingerprinted pursuant to California State Law.  All successful candidates under age 18 must possess a work permit prior to hire.
