DESCRIPTION  

The City of Thousand Oaks Public Works Department currently has an opening for an Associate/Senior Engineer! We are seeking engineers with the competence and experience to execute design and construction projects with confidence and professionalism. Ideal candidates will have demonstrated skills in the areas of water and wastewater utilities, land development, roadway improvement, energy resilience, engineering design, and/or construction management across all civil engineering disciplines. 

PRIMIARY RESPONSIBILITIES 

Associate Engineer:  

• Prepares and oversees the preparation of complex and technical engineering studies, plans, and reports   

• Assists the Division Manager and Team Leader/Senior Engineer in managing varying responsibilities including permitting, design and construction of water, wastewater, storm drain, pavement, energy resiliency and roadway improvements 

• Assists with the preparation of construction documents, drawings, estimates, and specifications    

• Coordinates and performs professional planning and engineering work including reviewing proposed land development plans 

• Participates in the review, development, and/or revision of the various elements of plans, ordinances, and other policies and procedures   

• Provide oversight of engineering consultants and/or co-workers  

• Meets and works with professional and public groups   

• Respond to residents regarding public works concerns  

• Assists in preparing basic engineering plans for roadway improvements including pavement, drainage and striping plans  

• Prepares engineering maps and drawings; participates in the filing and retrieval of engineering maps, documents, and records

• Manage important infrastructure design, engineering, and construction projects from start to finish

The City of Brisbane is currently recruiting for an Engineering Technician. Under direction of the Deputy Director Public Works, this position will focus on regulatory and utilities projects. Class Characteristics

Engineering Assistant is a classification of employee that provides technical support and assistance in production, reviewing, and processing of various civil engineering plans, permits, specifications and technical reports; that generates design drawings using CAD and GIS programs; and that performs a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility.

The Department:                                       

The Engineering and Transportation Department is supported by 27 FTEs, 9 contract employees, and a FY 2025-26 Capital Budget of approximately $72.9 million covering infrastructure and transportation projects. The Five-Year CIP (FY 2025-26 to FY 2029-30) totals $372 million, including citywide projects. Major projects include an impressive list of transportation projects, such as the SR84/US101 Freeway Interchange, grade separations along the Caltrain rail line, parking, transportation demand management and Vision Zero implementation, and various traffic calming and roadway projects. Other major projects entail the Transit Center, the Water Master Plan implementation, finalizing and implementing a Recycled Water Master Plan, and various Stormwater System improvements. Future priorities will involve developing an Adaptation Plan to address Sea Level Rise and the Redwood Shores and Bayshore protection projects.

The City of Foster City is looking for an experienced Associate Engineer with a passion for public service. This position will provide exposure to large-scale projects and internal collaboration and performs engineering work on water and wastewater capital improvement projects. They will perform regulatory reporting for utilities as well as the Sanitary Sewer Master Plan. Utility experience is desirable. 

It is essential that the candidate should have project management experience from conception to completion and be able to manage a wide variety of projects simultaneously while developing and maintaining positive and effective working relations with others. The ideal candidate would be able to effectively communicate information to non-engineering staff or persons, both orally and in writing, which are necessary for interacting with contractors, vendors, manufacturers, and residents.

Education and Experience
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Education: Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in engineering or a directly related field.

Experience: Three (3) years of professional experience in civil engineering work including project design, plan checking, and project management.

Licenses and Certifications

• Possession of a valid Certificate of Registration as a Civil Engineer in the State of California, desirable.

Selection Process
Applications will be reviewed for relevant education, experience, training and other job related qualifications. Based upon a review of employment applications and supplemental questionnaires received, a limited number of the qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the examination process. 

The process will consist of an Oral Panel Interview. An eligibility list will be established from those who pass the examination process with a score of 70% or higher. Current and future vacancies may be filled from this list. The list will remain in effect for at least one year unless exhausted sooner. 

The department will invite the most qualified candidates from the eligibility list to a final department interview. The Public Works department will make the hiring decision.

The Department of Public Works is accepting applications for the position of Public Works Technician I/II. Under general supervision, Public Works Technicians perform a variety of routine to journey level sub-professional technical, field, and office civil engineering work in a variety of technical areas.

The current vacant Public Works Technician I/II position is in the Road Operations - Permitting Section of the Road Services Division.

The Road Maintenance Division of County of San Mateo's Department of Public Works is responsible for routine and emergency repairs to over 315 miles of road surfaces, culverts, shoulders, drainage facilities, and roadside vegetation on roads within the public right-of-way of San Mateo County's unincorporated districts.

Public Works Technician I is the entry level class of this technical support series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn technical support and County procedures. As experience is gained, there is greater independence of action within established guidelines. This class is flexibly staffed with Public Works Technician II and incumbents are expected to advance to the higher level after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency which meet the qualification of the higher-level class.

Public Works Technician II is the journey level class of this series, fully competent to independently perform a variety of responsible technical support duties. This class is distinguished from the Senior Engineering Aide class which is specialized in scope and technical functions.
