Summary: 
Under general supervision, organizes, oversees and coordinates specialized recreational programs for the community and provides staff assistance in a specialized program area; and performs other duties as assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.

• Plans, organizes and implements specialized recreation programs for an assigned community area or group; verifies instructor availability; resolves conflicts related to activities and events.
• Promotes participation in scheduled activities and explains specialized programs to patrons; interfaces with prospective and current participants through emails, telephone and social media contacts; collaborates with marketing team to create fliers, assists in collecting information for print material, submits material for approval, and posts print advertisements.
• Coordinates the planning, promoting and implementing of programs and activities including registration and operations of special events offered by the unit.
• Participates in collecting fees for services; provides patron assistance with payments; properly stores or transfers cash monies; processes refund requests.
• Serves as liaison with community groups to assess needs and proposes program ideas; engages patrons to solicit feedback on existing programs and identifies gaps in service; implements changes and adjustments to programs to enhance participants’ experience.
• Generates a variety of records and reports related to all aspects of programming; maintains participation logs as well as staff scheduling for respective programs and events; assists with the development of master schedule to be viewed by the public; and tracks revenue and expendi­tures.
• Assists in conducting training programs for staff in specialized recreation area including monthly in-service meetings; maintains training documentation; assists in recruiting volunteers and contract personnel; properly retains and files documents.
• Performs regular safety inspections of assigned units; initiates maintenance work orders; maintains appropriate emergency supplies and first aid inventory for facility.
• Initiates purchase orders for supplies and equipment; manages order delivery; maintains budget and documents expenses.
• May be assigned to camp programs.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

• May be required to drive a District or personal vehicle.
• May attend and participate in councils or associations related to specialty.
• Participates during disasters or when emergency response is needed.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfac­torily. Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skill and/or ability listed below is qualifying.

Education/Experience: A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: graduation from high school or GED and at least 2,000 hours of relevant work or volunteer experience, at least 30 units completed in recreation or a related field. An associate degree is preferred. Must be at least 18 years old.

Language Ability: Ability to communicate effectively in English in both written and oral form. Ability to write routine correspondence using correct spelling and grammar.

Math Ability: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers, fractions and decimals.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to use common sense and exercise good judgement in solving problems. Ability to establish effective relationships with fellow employees, volunteers and participants and parents/guardians.

Certificates and Licenses:

• First Aid & CPR/AED within 90 days of employment with ability to maintain certifications thereafter as a condition of employment
• Valid California driver’s license with a good driving record and current automobile insurance. For ^Therapeutics unit: ability to obtain a commercial driver license within one year of employment (for a 15-passenger van).
• Department of Justice fingerprint clearance
• Proof of a negative TB skin test
• Conejo Senior Volunteer Program (CSVP): ability to obtain ServSafe Food Manager
  Certification within 90 days of employment

Supervisory Responsibilities: 
This position has no supervisory responsibilities. This position may provide guidance or direction to other part-time employees and to volunteers.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee works in a community center or office environment subject to frequent public contact and interruption, and to intermittent exposure to individuals acting in a disagreeable fashion. Exposure to hazardous conditions in the environment will vary depending on unit assigned.

If assigned to the Sports/Aquatics, Conejo Senior Volunteer Prgram (CSVP), or Therapeutics Unit, the employee is regularly exposed to wet or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; and risk of electrical shock.

Examination:

• Written Test/Practical Exercise:  A written test and a practical exercise may be used, in addition to the appraisal interview.

About the Position:  The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District (Midpen) Seasonal Ranger Aide is an entry-level position, which provides the opportunity to learn and perform some duties of a ranger under the guidance of experienced ranger staff.  Ranger Aides provide visitor information and assistance, travelling by non-emergency Midpen vehicles and on foot throughout an assigned geographical region. Ranger Aides perform a variety of customer service duties such as educating and informing the public about Midpen land use regulations, public relations and provide general information services, but do not have law enforcement authority.  Ranger Aides will assist with routine maintenance work on Midpen land and facilities and may respond to assist with emergency calls. Requirements: Must have the ability to learn Midpen lands, pertinent laws and regulations and contact, educate and inform the public about the lands and regulations; administer first aid and CPR; operate and maintain various power tools and equipment; operate two-way radios; communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; and other duties as assigned.

Certificates Needed: A valid California driver license is required upon appointment; valid professional rescuer CPR certificate and basic First Aid certificate (Midpen will offer training to candidates who do not possess CPR/First Aid certificates upon appointment).

Education & Experience: Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Equivalent to graduation from high school. Six months experience working in a customer service-related field.  Some experience or training in a parks settings is desirable.

Schedules:  This is a full-time position. Employees are expected to work full-time (40 hours during the work week); however, school schedules may be accommodated around regular days/hours of operations.  Weekend work (Sat/Sun) is required, with two consistent days off each week (either Mondays/Tuesdays off OR Thursdays/Fridays off), depending on the field office operational needs. Incumbents will work an 8-hour workday (plus a 30-minute unpaid meal break). Daily start and end times will be the same for most workdays, typically scheduled within the range of 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Must be willing to work weekends, nights, holidays, or extended shifts and work with exposure to difficult circumstances, including exposure to challenging situations and upset individuals. Seasonal assignments will not exceed 950 hours or 7 months, whichever comes first, and do not include benefits.

Working Conditions: Most work is outdoors within Midpen’s open space lands with exposure to inclement weather conditions. This requires the ability to patrol on foot, off trail, and in rugged terrain.  Also requires the ability to perform related emergency services and maintenance and construction work on Midpen lands. Once trained, Ranger Aides may work alone for parts or all of their shifts. Must wear prescribed District uniform and adhere to strict safety procedures and work habits.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The Executive Assistant/Deputy District Clerk will be required to attend evening Board/Committee meetings. Meetings may be held in Los Altos or offsite.  This position is part of the General Manager’s office at Midpen’s office in Los Altos, California. Midpen offers a hybrid office/telecommute work environment for this position.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be: 

• Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade supplemented by two (2) years of college-level coursework in business or secretarial science and
• Three (3) years of responsible secretarial experience involving assisting executive management or a high-level officials with administrative duties.
• Experience in a City or Special District Clerk’s Office is highly desirable.

LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED

Possession of a valid California Driver’s License.

Certified Municipal Clerk designation is desirable.

Hourly rate: Starting at $19.55 / hour

Part-time position: This position will be in the Grounds unit. Anticipated 3 days per week, up to 28 hours (may include weekend hours)

Summary:

Employees receive moderate supervision within a framework of standard policies and procedures and may be assigned to work in different areas throughout the District, including grounds, custodial and open space.

Must be available to work varied schedules, including weekends and holidays. Positions are part-time and schedules are made based on the needs of the assigned units of Grounds, Maintenance or Park Rangers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Support daily upkeep and cleanliness of parks, public areas, and facilities
• Perform routine maintenance tasks such as cleaning restrooms, removing litter, trail repair, and maintaining reservation or event areas
• Use hand and power tools for light landscaping work including pruning, weeding, and planting
• Prepare open space, athletic fields or recreational spaces for public use
• Assist with basic irrigation and sprinkler maintenance
• Follow safety procedures and maintain a clean and organized work environment

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

• Perform other related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

Must be at least 18 years old

Education and Experience:

Graduation from high school or equivalent; maintenance/construction or landscape experience preferred.

Certificates and Licenses:

• Valid California Driver License with satisfactory driving record
• Satisfactory completion of a pre-employment functional capacity examination
• Department of Justice fingerprint clearance

Language Ability:
Ability to read and comprehend basic instructions, short correspondence and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to park visitors and to other employees.

Math Ability:
Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10s and 100s. Ability to perform these operations using units of money and weight measurement, volume and distance.

Reasoning Ability:
Ability to use common-sense understanding to carry out instructions provided in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Work Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this class.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions including rain, sun and extreme heat for extended periods. The employee is frequently exposed to moving equipment and mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places, toxic or caustic chemicals, plants and pesticides. The noise level in the environment is loud.

The $5,000 new hire bonus is reserved for new hires; current City of Mountain View employees are not eligible. Bonus is paid in two payments; $2,500 in your first paycheck and $2,500 following successful completion of the probationary period.
