The Role:

The City of Redwood City is seeking Firefighter/Engineers who are licensed paramedics. Under direction of the Fire Captain, the Firefighter/Engineer will perform firefighting and fire prevention duties aimed at protecting life and property, operate and maintain firefighting equipment, and provide basic medical assistance.  Firefighter/Engineers also provide Advanced Life Support first responder pre-hospital emergency medical care and emergency medical assistance, perform minor station maintenance, and participate in training to maintain skills.  Please see the Firefighter/Engineer Paramedic job description  for more details.

Required Qualifications:

Experience and Training Guidelines:
A typical way to demonstrate the applicant possesses the required knowledge and ability may be obtained through the following ways:

1. Two years (2) of full-time firefighting service.
2. Possession of a California State Fire Training Firefighter I certificate is required.
3. Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver’s license.

Required Certification and License:

Maintenance Worker I

This is the entry-level class in the Maintenance Worker series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents with basic maintenance experience learn City infrastructure, systems, grounds, parks, facilities, use of tools and equipment, and a wide variety of practices and procedures. Positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required of the positions at the II level, but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise. As experience is gained, assignments become more varied and are performed with greater independence.

Maintenance Worker II

This is the journey-level class in the Maintenance Worker series responsible for performing the full range of duties required to ensure that City infrastructure, grounds, parks, and facilities to which assigned, are maintained in a safe and effective working condition and provide the highest level of safety for public use. Responsibilities include inspecting and attending to assigned areas in a timely manner, and performing a wide variety of tasks in the maintenance and repair of assigned areas. Positions at this level are distinguished from the level I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned, working independently and exercising judgment and initiative. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. This class is distinguished from the Senior Maintenance Worker in that the latter is responsible for technical and functional supervision of lower-level maintenance staff and performs the most complex duties assigned to the series.

The Public Works Department’s Environmental Services Division (ESD) is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the City’s 15.7 million gallon per day (MGD) conventional activated sludge wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). The WWTP serves a population of more than 140,000 with an annual operating budget in excess of $15 million and has a staff of 28 professional and technical personnel. The Position

• Install, maintain, repair and research a variety of supervisory controls and replacement electrical components that are part of advanced wastewater treatment processes such as aeration, filtration, disinfection and dichlorination, sludge dewatering, odor control, and an environmental laboratory.
• Perform wiring required for the installation of electronic equipment; electrical conductors in conduits; splice high and low voltage cables utilizing hand taping and pre- molded splice kits.
• Design, install, maintain, repair, test and construct electrical assemblies.
• Troubleshoot plant electrical systems, controls and related process equipment. Provide technical support for other work groups within Public Works.
• Specify, install, program, and repair various types of variable frequency motor drive systems.
• Fabricate, maintain, install, service, and calculate power load distributions to various motors and related equipment.
• Install and repair programmable logic controllers and install related hardware and software for control systems in conjunction with controls technician.
• Maintain and repair automatic control valves and associated control functions.
• Implement preventive maintenance and repair on motors from fractional to over 400 horsepower. Record and calculate current requirements for new electrical installations.

The County of San Mateo’s Department of Public Works is seeking applications for the position of Equipment Mechanic III.

The Equipment Mechanic III, under general supervision, service and repair water district pumps and emergency generators, perform mechanical maintenance and repair work on road construction equipment in the shop as well as out in the field and perform routine maintenance and repair tasks as appropriate.

The Vehicle and Equipment Services Section maintains, inspects, services, and repairs County motor vehicles including school and other buses, trucks, equipment, Sheriff's Office vehicles, and motor pool vehicles. Our service and repair stations are located in Redwood City and San Mateo.

 

Examples Of Duties

 

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Inspect and maintain water district pumps and all emergency generators.
• Perform and run tests on all assigned pumps and generators as required.
• Perform preventative maintenance on all pumps and generators, including tune-ups, oil changes.
• Overhaul pumps, adjust packing, and adjust thrust washers.
• Maintain a record of each unit, which may include but not limited to, preventative maintenance, and inspection dates and times.
• Maintain and troubleshoot diesel process equipment such as pumps, valves, mechanical seals and tanks.
• Perform and coordinate preventative maintenance per required schedule and procedures.
• Certify pumps and generators to meet California Air Board Quality standards.
• Overhaul small to large gasoline and diesel engines.

• Lube chassis, door and hood hinges, door locks and padlocks check and maintain fluid levels, change oil and oil filters.
• Inspect, clean and service air cleaners.
• Repair, mount and balance tubes and tires and rotate tires as needed.

• Steam clean vehicle exterior, engine compartment and other components.
• Inspect, replace and repair cooling system, radiator, pump, thermostats, belts and hoses.
• Inspect, repair and replace exhaust system muffler and exhaust pipes.
• Inspect engine, transmission and differential for leaks and cracks; refer to supervisor if found and complete a repair sheet.
• Inspect and adjust clutch for free play.
• Install seat belts and inspect for wear.
• Perform minor repairs to parts of engine and/or replace them.
• Inspect and adjust or replace door, hood, trunk latches.
• Replace minor parts such as gauges, warning light bulbs, fuses, wind-shield wiper blades, radiator and gas tank caps; replace and adjust headlights and taillights.
• Complete repair sheets noting parts and labor hours used.
• Prepare records and reports. 
• Perform smog inspections and certifications.
• Observe safety regulations, work in such a manner to avoid hazardous situations, and bring potential hazards to supervisor's attention.
• Make service calls using shop vehicle lubrication truck.
• Drive and operate forklift.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Licensure/Certification:

• Possession and maintenance of a valid California Commercial Learner’s Permit at the time of appointment is required if a California Class A Commercial Driver’s License is not held; and must obtain and maintain a valid California Class A Commercial Driver’s License with tank vehicle and hazardous materials endorsements within six months of hire.

Physical Requirements
This position requires a moderate to high level of physical activity depending on program assignment. Duties may include standing, walking, bending, squatting, kneeling, reaching, and sitting for extended periods of time while facilitating programs, interacting with participants, or performing administrative tasks. Employees must be able to actively supervise and engage participants in a variety of recreation programs and activities, both indoors and outdoors, and move quickly to respond to participant needs and ensure safety. The position may also require lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling equipment, supplies, tables, chairs, or other materials weighing up to approximately 30 – 50 pounds as part of program setup and breakdown. Some assignments may involve computer and desk work for program planning, communication, and administrative duties.

The ideal candidate for Plan Check Engineer with our Office of Building Safety will possess strong technical background in structural engineering and/or building life safety in a wide range of residential and commercial projects.  This candidate will be proactive, customer service-oriented, and a team player and demonstrates effective communication skills.  Analytical skills, initiative, independent judgment, along with strong time management and attention to detail, are key attributes for success in this role.

The Department: 

Silicon Valley Power is a not-for-profit municipal electric utility serving the City of Santa Clara since 1896, delivering reliable and competitively priced electricity to over 55,000 customers, including many of the world’s largest data centers and technology companies. With one of the nation’s highest load densities and a peak demand exceeding 700 MW, SVP supports rapid regional growth through a robust transmission and distribution system and ongoing substation and infrastructure expansion and reinforcement. The utility supplies a power mix that is heavily clean and carbon-free sourced from hydro, wind, solar, and geothermal assets.

 

The Position: 

SVP is seeking Journey Line workers that can perform routine and emergency work maintaining and expanding SVP’s electric transmission and distribution system, including but not limited to:

• Perform electrical installation and repair work and to construct and maintain overhead and underground electric distribution and transmission system.
• Think and act appropriately and quickly in emergencies.
• Maintain good public relations.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
