The Department

The Suisun City Police Department is a progressive and proactive law enforcement agency. As a result of its proximity to neighboring jurisdictions, the employees of the Suisun City Police Department remain extremely busy as they address the needs of the community.

THE DEPARTMENT

The American Canyon Police Department provides first response services to all forms of emergencies and crises.  The Department provides public safety by enforcing the Penal Code, Health and Safety Code, Vehicle Code, and local ordinances.  American Canyon Police Department is comprised of 24 sworn peace officers, two non-sworn Police Technicians, and an Administrative Clerk.

THE POSITION

The Police Technician performs a variety of non-sworn, administrative and field support tasks associated with law enforcement support services, which may include property and evidence collection, crime prevention, parking enforcement, vehicle abatement, and community relations; to maintain confidential and highly sensitive records related to police activities; and to perform a variety of tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility.

This is a high-profile position with frequent interactions with community members in often difficult circumstances. The quality of the work performed in this role is reflective of the standards of the Department and the City. This is a uniformed, civilian position that does not require peace officer status. However, a detailed background investigation, medical exam and drug screening is required due to the sensitive nature of the work involved.

This position is not designated for retired annuitants.

THE POSITION

Typical duties performed by a Police Technician may include, but are not limited to, the following:
 

• Patrol areas of the City to identify and resolve parking violations and traffic hazards and enforce applicable laws; respond to citizen complaints regarding parking and abandoned vehicle laws; tag and arrange transportation of abandoned vehicles.
• Provide assistance, information and directions to motorists; assist in the coordination of Police Service support for special events in the community; provide traffic control at local schools.
• Respond to non-emergency calls and service requests; take information from citizens and prepare crime reports for non-active calls; interview victims, suspects and witnesses, as directed, and provide referral information.
• Assist with Neighborhood Watch meetings and other crime prevention activities; provide information to interested citizens on neighborhood alert procedures; assist in coordinating crime prevention public displays.
• Collect, receive, and safeguard property/evidence; maintain evidence chain-of-custody records; transport evidence to Sheriff’s Department, Department of Justice, and outside crime lab.
• Coordinate public education, safety and prevention programs, and community outreach activities related to assigned responsibilities.
• Serve as liaison between court staff and Police Officers; assist Police Officers with follow-up evidence requests from the District Attorney’s Office. 
• Log and distribute subpoenas to officers and citizens.
• Receive calls; respond to citizen’s questions and complaints within established guidelines; distribute calls for officer assistance to communications centers; take and relay messages to department personnel as required.
• Handle the abandoned vehicle program to include locating and citing abandoned vehicles and overseeing the towing away of the vehicle.
• Coordinate various crime prevention, volunteer, and community policing programs.
• Research and compile statistical data.
• Assist Police Officers with vehicle and person searches.
• Drive a City vehicle to respond to citizen/officer requests; assist and support patrol division in the performance of their duties in the field.
• Assist with coordination of fleet maintenance and daily fueling of vehicles. 
• Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner.
• Complete special projects as assigned.
• Perform general administrative support functions; type letters, forms, memoranda, and reports; transcribe police reports and notes; operate a computer system to enter/retrieve/transfer data; copy materials; maintain filing systems, screen, sort, and distribute mail; order and maintain office supplies and equipment.
• Assist Police department personnel as needed.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

The Position: Under supervision (Public Safety Dispatcher I) or general supervision (Public Safety Dispatcher II)  the incumbent performs a variety of duties involved in receiving, evaluating, prioritizing, and relaying calls for emergency and non-emergency public safety assistance; dispatches appropriate units and coordinates response of emergency personnel; maintains, processes, and distributes police records; operates a variety of telecommunications equipment, including radio, telephone, and CAD systems; and performs a wide variety of specialized clerical duties involved in the preparation, maintenance, and release of materials related to law enforcement activities.

The Police Department

The Ideal Candidate

The Police Department is searching for an effective and self-motivated individual who has the ability to perform first line supervisory duties, as well as provide secretarial support to an executive. The Senior Executive Assistant will be well versed in writing, reporting, supply management, scheduling, organization, time management, equipment maintenance and travel logistics. The incumbent will have strong customer service skills to communicate in a professional and effective manner both verbally and in writing. The City of Fremont's Police Department is hiring for the position of Senior Office Specialist. There are two vacancies: one vacancy resides in the Animal Services Division and the second vacancy resides in the Business Services Division.

The Position

The Public Service Assistant (PSA) II is assigned to the Police Department’s Red-Light Camera Unit. Under direct supervision of the Traffic Enforcement Project Specialist, the Public Service Assistant II will perform administrative tasks in support of the Police Department’s Red-Light Camera Unit. This position is a temporary/part-time appointment and may work up to 20 hours a week.

Examples of job duties include:

• Order and prepare court packets of red-light violation from Red Flex for review by court commissioner and defendants.
• Research and understand several sections of the vehicle, government and evidence code as it pertains to red light violations.
• Prepare trial by written declaration packets.
• Research and print out DMV information, including photos and convictions for case files.
• Assist with conducting enforcement sign and equipment verifications.
• Assist with verifying yellow light timing with city Traffic Engineers.
• Assist with review and maintenance of court evidence binders.
• Uploading case file evidence.
• Research statistical studies and assist in report preparation.
• Order office supplies and maintain a functional and organized workspace.
• Retrieve, sort and distribute incoming mail.
• Answer phone and return phone and email messages.
• Other duties as assigned

Police Department

Education: Equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree from a four-year college or university with major work in public or business administration or related field.

Experience: One to two years of general administrative experience, preferably in grant administration in local government.

License: Possession of a valid Class “C” California Driver's License.

What You’ll Do

• Receive on-the-job training, learn, and perform work in the following police records functions:

• Type, process, scan, and file a wide variety of police reports, warrants, subpoenas, citations, registrant files and court ordered record sealings utilizing various types of technology.
• Verify computer entries, process validations and assist with state and federal audits.
• Maintain logs for state and federal computer entries and updates.
• Retrieve and review daily crime reports for accuracy prior to submission to the District Attorney.
• Operate and organize a Department Records Management System to retrieve information such as searches for names, incidents, reports, and calls for service.
• Disseminate records information to department staff, outside law enforcement agencies, the public and other employees according to established laws and guidelines.
• Keep current on continuous changes and additions in report release requirements.
• Handle citizen complaints at the reception counter and on the telephone.
• Assist in training new and other assigned personnel.
• Perform record checks for authorized agencies in strict accordance with the law.
• Process vehicle release forms and collect fees.
• Process mail and order supplies.
• Purge department and citywide files as required.
• Assist in developing procedures.

If assigned to the Property Unit, duties may include but not limited to:

• Receive and maintain the chain of custody and integrity of, and safely store evidence, found property, and property held for safekeeping.
• Advise staff on proper packaging and submission procedures.
• Conduct inventories and audits of property and evidence.
• Release property to the public or the legally authorized persons in accordance with disposition forms, court orders, or stipulations.
• Check out items needed for court, investigations, and forensic testing; share evidence needed for investigation or review; transport items to and from laboratory and maintain strict records of chain of custody.
• Testify in court to verify chain of custody records of evidence.
• Make arrangements for auction of unclaimed property.

The Position

The Police Public Service Assistant (PSA) III is assigned to the Police Department’s Crime Lab and provides support to the Forensic Specialists and Crime Scene Investigators during operations in the Crime Lab. The Police Public Service Assistant III position requires excellent customer service and communication skills.

Examples of job duties include:

• Ordering and purchasing supplies.
• Re-supply evidence packaging area and appropriate lab areas.
• Clerical tasks, to include typing, running stats, electronic filing tasks, etc.
• Pick up and return evidence as needed.
• Pick up and deliver equipment and supplies.
• Arrange logistical operations within the lab and evidence packaging area including but not limited to arranging chemical waste and sharps removal, filter replacement, etc.
• Minor maintenance on office or lab equipment as required.
• Assist in assembling print kits for evidence collection.
• Identify and communicate with police, and outside vendors to complete job duties.
• Escorts outside vendors while they conduct business on the police campus.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
