Maintenance Workers at all levels perform a variety of manual, manipulative and semi-skilled tasks in the construction, operation and maintenance of public services facilities; drive trucks and operates equipment; perform heavy physical labor; and perform other duties as assigned. Maintenance Worker IIs additionally perform lead functions, such as assigning work, training crew, and giving input on performance evaluations;.

DEFINITION: Under general supervision, direct, supervise, and coordinate operations and maintenance activities for the Town’s Public Works and Parks departments. Public Works responsibilities include, but are not limited to, streets, right-of-ways, street medians, storm drain maintenance, stormwater pollution prevention, streetlight maintenance, major park facility repairs, and Town buildings.  Parks responsibilities include, but are not limited to, parks, landscaped public areas, recreational amenities, minor park facility maintenance, and open space amenities. Functions and responsibilities under each Department may shift or overlap due to operational, staffing, or other Town needs.

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

The position is a supervisory class that performs and oversees work that is difficult and complex. The position exercises direct supervision to workers in the maintenance workerseries.  The incumbent is responsible for assisting with the development, recommendation, and implementation of the Town’s goals, objectives, policies, and procedures, and works extensively with Public Works and Parks and Recreation staff, other Town employees, various public/private organizations, and the general public. The person in this position performs maintenance work in addition to supervision. Cross departmental collaboration between the Public Works and Parks maintenance function is required, to ensure service continuity, emergency response, and project completion.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED:

Under general direction of Department Directors or their designees, the Public Works/Parks Maintenance Supervisor assists in overseeing the Public Works and/or Parks maintenance activities of the Town.  The position is responsible for supervision of staff assigned to Public Works and Parks Maintenance programs, and organizes, supervises, and carries out year-round preventive and ongoing maintenance programs.   WORKING CONDITIONS:

Attends meetings at various sites within and away from the Town.

Work on evenings, weekends, and holidays may be required. Incumbents must be willing to work extended hours and be called back in emergencies.  

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Work is conducted in an office setting and in the field on a year-round basis. (1) Mobility: frequent performance of heavy manual labor; frequent standing for long periods of time; frequent bending and squatting. • Supervise assigned services and activities related to:
  • Streets, right-of-ways, street medians, storm drain maintenance, stormwater pollution prevention, streetlight maintenance, major park facility repairs, Town buildings, and capital improvement projects and other assigned public works functional areas.
  • Parks, landscaped public areas, recreational amenities, minor park facility maintenance, open space amenities, capital improvement projects and other assigned parks functional areas.​​​​​​​
• Participate in the monitoring and evaluation of efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery methods and procedures; recommend, within departmental policy, appropriate service and staffing levels.
• Plan, direct, coordinate, and review the work plan for assigned areas; assign work activities and projects; review and evaluate work products, methods, and procedures; meet with staff to identify and resolve problems.
• Select, train, and evaluate assigned staff; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; investigate problems and recommend and implement discipline. 
• Order and maintain supplies, tools, and equipment.
• Provide recommendations on staffing, equipment, materials, and supplies needed for public works and parks maintenance activities.
• Serve as liaison for the operations and maintenance function with other Town departments and outside agencies; negotiate and resolve sensitive and controversial issues.
• Establish, ensure compliance, and enforce safety requirements; coordinate and participate in safety training for staff.
• Respond to and resolve difficult and sensitive inquiries and complaints.
• Serve in various emergency response roles as required.
• Assist in the implementation and reporting of contractual agreements in compliance with state and regional regulations, and local policies and procedures.
• Coordinate and oversee contracts for quality work and adherence to contract terms and conditions.
• Provide technical guidance to contractors concerning public works and parks projects.
• Assist and coordinate work of various community groups,such as volunteers, or scouts.
• Coordinate with and support Public Works or Parks operations when workload, staffing, or Town priorities require cross-assistance.

Position Summary

Under general supervision, the Ferry Mechanic performs preventative, scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, trouble-shooting, repair, and modifications on structural, mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, piping and control systems found on ferry vessels and passenger terminals; performs related work as assigned. Responsibilities include record keeping and written verification of work accomplished.

Salary Range:  
Day Shift:               $56.32 per hour
Swing Shift:           $56.32 per hour + 10% differential pay
Graveyard Shift:    $56.32 per hour + 15% differential pay
 

Essential Responsibilities

• Working with computers on a daily basis for work scheduling, work order entry and work order reporting on the Districts electronic maintenance system in addition to notifications and communications.
• Conducts tests, analyses and measurements as directed to diagnose any unusual, erratic or malfunctioning occurrence in any shipboard or terminal system or component.
• Reports any unusual wear patterns, noise, pressure, temperature, or changes in voltage, current, cycles, resistance or any other indication of potential malfunction.
• References manufacturer schematics including blueprints, drawings and specifications to resolve maintenance issues.
• References parts catalogues and other sources to determine correct parts for specific applications.
• Performs inspections, preventive maintenance, repairs and overhauls as directed.
• Documents and records work performed and parts and materials used in the electronic maintenance system. 
• Reports all safety hazards and corrects unsafe situations immediately where possible.
• Immediately reports to supervisor any potential maintenance problem or condition which could cause a possible schedule delay.
• Maintains all work areas, special tools and equipment used in performing maintenance function, in a clean and orderly manner.
• Operate a forklift and other equipment/vehicles safely.
• Interacts on a regular basis with vessel operations personnel.
• Adheres to the safety and health rules and safe working practices applicable to job.

What You’ll Do

The Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) Mechanic I/II performs semi‑skilled and skilled work in the installation and repair of pumps, motors, chain drives, valves and related equipment and to do related work as required.  The WWTP Mechanic I is the entry level class in the Plant Mechanic series.  Positions in this class normally perform beginning level mechanical repair and maintenance work on a wide variety of wastewater quality control plant systems and equipment. Under this class series concept, positions assigned to the class of Plant Mechanic II may reasonably be filled at the Plant Mechanic I level.  The WWTP Mechanic II is the journey level class in the Plant Mechanic series. Positions assigned to this class are flexibly staffed and are expected to perform the most skilled repair and maintenance work and have a thorough knowledge of the operational characteristics, maintenance and repair methods and techniques and most typical system difficulties for the full range of equipment and operational systems in the plant. All positions assigned to this class require the ability to work independently, exercising judgment and initiative. Plant Mechanics II may also be expected to assist in the supervision of less experienced personnel.

 

Depending upon assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Operate machines and tools in repairing defective parts of pumps, compressors, generators, motors, lift stations, boilers and related mechanical equipment.

• Maintain accurate mechanical maintenance records.

• Install, repair, replace, and modify pumps, controllers, bearings, seals, hydraulic pipes, timing devices and assist in installing telemetering electrical equipment.

• Use a variety of power hand tools, cutting and welding equipment and electrical test equipment. Fully utilize the computerized work systems in accordance with work flow processes.

• Perform preventive maintenance on wastewater treatment plant mechanical and electrical equipment. Evaluate equipment performance and identify problem areas.

• Maintain stock inventory and adequate supply of replacement parts.

• Plant mechanics may be required to respond to emergency situations after normal working hours and be subject to serve on emergency stand-by alert and call out status on a rotational basis, including participation in rotating stand-by duties.

• Analyze or create documents, such as blueprints, markings, surveys, etc. to problem solve the most effective approach to a task.

• Verify the work of others for accuracy, proper work methods, techniques, and compliance.

• Formulate solutions to problems with equipment or operations, including logistics, operations, and processes.

• Draft operating procedures.

The Wastewater Treatment Plant Mechanic I/II receives supervision from the Wastewater Treatment Plant Maintenance Superintendent or Wastewater Treatment Plant Mechanic III as directed technical or functional supervision may be provided by higher level treatment plant maintenance personnel.  Assignments may require indirect supervision of less experienced plant maintenance personnel.

Building Maintenance Workers (HVAC) design, fabricate, inspect, install, troubleshoot and evaluate problems with HVAC equipment.  They also repair heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems and related apparatus. Additionally, they install, repair and/or replace controls for energy management system as well as perform preventive maintenance and sheet metal work, including design and fabrication.

The Building Maintenance Division of the Maintenance Operations Department is also seeking experienced Building Maintenance Workers to provide general maintenance support for all public facilities, such as City Hall, Historic Buildings, Fire Stations, Police Department, Recreation facilities, and Rental Housing. Maintenance tasks for the general assignment typically include painting, electrical repairs, wall repair, roof repair, carpentry/metal work, and floor repair.

The San Bruno Public Works Department is committed to delivering responsive, professional, and efficient services that maintain and enhance the City’s infrastructure. With responsibility over streets, storm drains, wastewater collection, water distribution, public facilities, and engineering, the department is committed to providing responsive, high-quality service, and plays a vital role in keeping the city safe, clean, and functional.

 

Under immediate supervision, part-time maintenance assistants perform a range of unskilled and semiskilled tasks that support the day-to-day upkeep of the City’s infrastructure. This is a part-time, temporary position with the Public Works Department (18-20 hours per week) to support the City’s “Cleanup San Bruno” initiative.

 

Examples of duties may include, but are not limited to:

• Cleans and removes debris and litter from parking lots, streets, gutters, storm drains, catch basins, and sidewalks, by shoveling, raking, sweeping, and picking up debris.
• Removal and loading of illegal dumping such as tires, mattresses, and furniture.
• Assists in loading, transporting, and unloading equipment, materials, debris, and other heavy objects related to maintenance.
• Operates a City vehicle and power tools necessary to complete maintenance for the above assigned areas.
• Assists with fire hydrant flushing program.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education, experience, and training that would provide the best qualified candidates. Applicants should have the ability to read, write and carry out oral and written directions. Applicants should also have the ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. Ideal candidates will have knowledge of proper use and care of common hand tools, skills performing manual work, and lifting heavy objects up to 50 pounds. Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical and drug test.

 

Special Requirements:

• Possession of a valid California driver’s license with good driving record (DMV printout required).

The Department

The Parks and Recreation Department is the third largest department in the City and is organized by program area, with each program administered by a supervisor, coordinator, or specialist. The County of San Mateo's Department of Public Works is seeking applications for the position of Electrician. 

 

Electricians are responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems and equipment in and around County buildings. This position requires the ability to work independently in different locations with minimal supervision. While much of the work is performed independently, the Construction Services section is characterized by a strong sense of teamwork and camaraderie.

Construction Services Section
Construction Services offers specialized crafts services that go beyond routine maintenance provided by the Facilities Operations and Maintenance section. We partner with the County and Cities to deliver carpentry, graffiti abatement, and lighting district services. Our skilled team, including craftsmen, maintenance workers, utility workers, and office support staff, handles diverse tasks from remodels to new construction projects. Trades represented include electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and painting, ensuring comprehensive solutions for our clients.

The ideal candidate for this position will have:

• Eight or more years of experience performing Journey-level facilities maintenance electrical work.
• A Journeyman's Electrician Card (certificate).
• Excellent computer skills including familiarity with mobile applications.
• Experience with IT cabling.

Electricians work at various locations throughout San Mateo County (County Facilities/Buildings, San Mateo Medical Center, Hall of Justice, Maguire Correctional Facility, Maple Street Correctional Center, Youth Services Center, and multiple Community Resource Centers within the county).

The selected candidate for this job must undergo a thorough background check by the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office and fill out a comprehensive security clearance form.
