About the Opportunities
We are excited to announce multiple full-time, permanent opportunities for Maintenance Workers in the Water and Sewer / Collections divisions within Public Works. Under general supervision, you will perform a variety of manual tasks to maintain the City's vital infrastructure. The eligibility list created could be used to fill any Maintenance Worker I vacancies within the department of Public Works.
Water Division
In this division, you will perform manual labor in operational maintenance and repair of leaks, water mains, hydrants, valves, and service lines. You will assist in servicing and reading water meters, testing samples, emergency response, and construction tasks such as laying pipe and excavating trenches.
Sewer / Collections Division
In this division, you will perform manual labor and operate heavy equipment to maintain sewer mains, laterals, and manholes. Duties include cleaning sewer lines, operating combination trucks, performing inspections to prevent flooding, and responding to emergency sewage spills or blocked systems.
Your Key Responsibilities may include:
Infrastructure Maintenance: Ensuring City infrastructure complies with level of service standards.
Manual Labor: Performing heavy labor including shoveling, lifting, and digging for the repair of landscaping, sewers, streets, and water lines.
Equipment Operation: Safely operating hand/power tools in the performance of assigned duties.
Emergency Response: Responding to emergency calls for service (sewers, water leaks, storm drains) after hours and on weekends.
Technical Tasks: Performing basic carpentry, cement work, and oxyacetylene cutting.
Qualifications
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent GED.
Experience: One (1) year of full-time experience in semiskilled construction maintenance or landscape maintenance work.
Licenses & Certifications:
Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record.
Must obtain a Class B California Driver’s License with required endorsements within six (6) months of hire.
Water Division: Must obtain a Class D-2 Water Distribution Certificate within one (1) year.
Collections Division: Must obtain a CWEA Grade I Collections Certificate within one (1) year.
Knowledge and Abilities:
Knowledge of safety hazards and applicable safety precautions.
Ability to think and act quickly in emergency situations.
Ability to meet physical requirements, including lifting up to 100 pounds and working in confined spaces or inclement weather.
Effective communication skills and the ability to follow complex verbal and written instructions.
Ability to report to work any hour of the day or night during a disaster or other emergency situations.
