The City of Newark is looking for a motivated and detail-oriented Permit Technician to join our Building Division. In this key role, you'll provide technical support and customer service, assisting the public, contractors, and developers with building permit applications.
You'll be responsible for:
- Processing applications at the front counter, over the phone, and via correspondence.
- Calculating and collecting permit fees.
- Issuing over-the-counter permits.
- Ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
As a Permit Technician, you'll play a vital role in ensuring smooth development projects, from small residential builds to large commercial developments, contributing to Newark's commitment to efficient public services and a welcoming community. You'll work closely with various stakeholders to provide timely and accurate service while upholding City regulations.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
Education:
- Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent.
Experience:
- Two (2) years of increasingly responsible support experience with a public agency working in building inspection, planning, or engineering or equivalent private sector experience with a high level of public contact and experience explaining procedures and regulations.
License:
- This classification requires the ability to travel independently within and outside of City limits.
- Possession of a Building Permit Technician certification from the International Code Council within the probationary period and throughout employment.
