PART-TIME LIBRARIAN I/LIBRARY ASSISTANT I

The Mill Valley Public Library is looking for a part-time librarian who is passionate about public service, shows initiative, and has a strong work ethic to work the adult reference desk. This is a great opportunity to get experience in reference work and assisting patrons with their needs. You will work in a very fast-paced, collaborative environment.  

ESTIMATED NUMBER OF HOURS:

Will work at least one shift per week with additional sub hours available. Applicant must be able to work Saturday (9:15am - 5:15pm) and/or Sunday (11:30am - 5pm) and one weeknight until 8pm. 

Salary: $24.77 - $41.04/hour depending on experience and education.

ABOUT THE POSITION:

Staffing the Adult Reference Desk is the primary responsibility of this position. A knowledge of literature or the desire to read widely is essential in making book recommendations and understanding types of computers and assisting with technology troubleshooting is crucial. The Mill Valley Library is fast-paced and innovative; the person in this position needs to learn new skills quickly, adapt easily to change, be detail-oriented, and patron focused. Many part-time staff are cross trained to work in other Library departments as needed.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

• Provide reference services including readers’ advisory. 
• Provide excellent customer service to all patrons with consistency and in line with library policies.
• Assist patrons troubleshooting technological issues on both library computers and personal devices.
• Help with programming as needed.
• Additional duties based on interests and demonstrated quality of work.

ABOUT THE POSITION:
The Circulation Manager leads the day-to-day operations and strategic direction of the Library’s Circulation Services. As a member of the Library’s management team, this role is instrumental in maintaining efficient, patron-centered service. Key responsibilities include overseeing circulation operations at the Serramonte Main Library: supervising and supporting staff, managing schedules, and ensuring a high standard of customer service. The Circulation Manager also collaborates with managers across all four Daly City library locations, contributes to committee work, supports program planning and implementation related to circulation services, and completes special projects as assigned.

DEFINITION

Under the general supervision of a Librarian II, Librarian III or Library Services Manager, this position is responsible for coordinating a library program area such as Circulation, Programming, Outreach and Marketing, or Technology Support and Training.  This is the highest level of the Library Assistant series and is distinguished from the next lower class by the higher level of responsibility, including coordinating services system-wide and training and supervising staff. 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Plan and coordinate the operation of the circulation desk; perform circulation desk duties including checking materials in and out as necessary; train and supervise Library Assistants, Aides, and Pages; assist in the formulating and enforcing local library policies and procedures; may represent the City library on committees dealing with procedures for conducting cooperative library activities throughout the County; maintain the currency of policy and procedure manuals for both intra-library and inter-library activities; assure that subordinate staff operate in accordance with current policies and procedures; schedule work and maintain adequate staffing level; compile weekly timesheets and certify their accuracy; monitor job performance and prepare written evaluations; interpret library policy to patrons and subordinates; assist library patrons in locating and using library materials; answer basic reference questions referring higher level or more complicated questions to appropriate staff; identify and correct operational problems; resolve patron complaints or disputes; report in a timely fashion when problems with equipment or physical plant occur; plan and host library events; promote the library at public events; design promotional materials; plan and implement the maintenance of library computers and other technology; coordinate with third-party vendors, City, and Peninsula Library System information systems staff; troubleshoot technology malfunctions; plan and provide training on the use of technology to staff and patrons; and other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of: Public library purposes, practices, conventions, techniques, and terminology; modern office and library procedures and methods including microcomputer applications and library automation; business math; and principles of supervision.

Ability to: Exercise initiative, tact, leadership, and independent judgment; interact with and relate effectively to people of different ages, socioeconomic status, and ethnic background; maintain appropriate public service demeanor; work effectively without close supervision; make sound judgments and decisions within established guidelines; employ principles and techniques of supervision; operate and troubleshoot library equipment and contact service providers as needed; keyboard at a speed necessary for successful job performance; work with numbers and alphabet accurately; communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing; perform such physical tasks as lifting and moving library materials, stooping, reaching, and walking up and down stairs; interact positively and cooperate with co-workers, respond politely to customers, work as a team member, function under demanding time pressure, respond in a positive manner to supervision, and attend work and perform duties on a regular and consistent basis.

Education: High school graduation or equivalent and possession of an AA degree or completion of two years (50 semester units) of college level courses. Library experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Experience: Three years of full time public library employment at the Library Assistant II level or equivalent.

License: Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's license.

 Applications will be accepted for this position on an ongoing basis. The selection process may include a written examination and interview.

This hourly position is not in Civil Service and does not receive benefits.

10-15 hours/week

THE POSITION

Library Aides provide customer service to library visitors. Duties include checking items in and out at the Checkout Desk, opening new library accounts, collecting fines and fees, shelving materials, and assisting library visitors in finding materials and using the computers. Other tasks may include processing materials, providing storytimes for children, and assisting with other public programs for children, teens and adults. This is an ideal job for someone who is friendly, computer savvy, enjoys working with the public, putting things in order, and is detail-oriented. Bilingual skills are desirable.

DEFINITION

Under supervision, to do library clerical, technical and customer service work, and related assignments as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Check materials in and out, sort materials, open new library accounts, explain library policies and resolve disputes, collect fines and fees, assist library patrons with self-checkout and public-use computers, printers, photocopiers, and scanners, answer routine information questions, complete opening and closing procedures, and perform related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:  Modern office and record-keeping procedures; use of office equipment and technology; numerical and alphabetical filing; basic mathematical principles.

Ability to: 

Provide excellent customer service; apply and explain library policies; communicate clearly, both orally and in writing; perform basic troubleshooting and assist patrons with computer use; adapt to changing technology and working conditions; learn the Dewey Decimal Classification System and library procedures; interact positively and cooperate with co-workers; function under demanding time pressure; respond in a positive manner to supervision; and attend work and perform duties on a regular and consistent basis. 

Bilingual ability (Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, or Tagalog) is highly desirable.

Must be physically able to stand for extended periods, walk, bend, kneel, push wheeled carts, lift, reach overhead, go up and down stairs, and use a step stool.

Availability for evening and Saturday shifts is required.
