Typical Duties

Duties include but are not limited to the following:
• Under general supervision: patrol designated areas in, by foot, by bicycle, or other means to preserve law and order;

• Respond to calls for the protection of life and property, the enforcement of laws and ordinances, general public service calls, and complaints including those involving automobile accidents, traffic hazards, misdemeanor and felony incidents;
• Investigate complaints and take appropriate action, which may include the use of deadly or non-deadly force;
• Use sound judgment under adverse, stressful conditions;
• Identify, collect, preserve, process, and book evidence;
• Locate and interview victims and witnesses;
• Work in partnership with the Santa Clara Police Department and the District Attorney's Office to follow through on criminal complaints;
• Apprehend and arrest offenders for crimes committed under federal, state, and local laws and codes;
• Control and mitigate people under the influence of drugs or alcohol or other potentially hostile situations;
• Establish and preserve good relationships with the general public;
• Answer questions from the public concerning local and state laws, procedures, and activities of the department, apply good public relation principals;
• Participate in continuous training required by POST  to enhance law enforcement skills 
• Attend meetings and trainings;
• Prepare a variety of reports including those on activities, operations, arrests made, and unusual incidents observed; prepare investigative reports and case information;
• Testify in courts and at hearings; prepare and present case evidence;
• Escort prisoners to county jail, juvenile hall, or Santa Clara Police Department; and
• Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE  

• Currently employed as a Full Time or Part Time Peace Officer with a California Law Enforcement Agency; or

• Currently working as a Level I Reserve Police Officer with a California Law Enforcement Agency; or

• Retired as a Full Time Peace Officer with a California Law Enforcement Agency; or two years experience as a Peace Officer with a California Law Enforcement Agency and possession of a valid Basic Certificate issued by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training.  

LICENSES &/OR CERTIFICATES

• Possession of a valid driver's license is required; 

• Proof of a current Basic or higher certificate issued by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) is required at the time of application and for the duration of employment  (Not required for Reserve Police Officers, see below);

• Must have passed Field Training Program with home agency as required by POST;

• Must have passed Probationary Period with home agency;

• The minimum Peace Officer selection standards are set forth in Government Code (GC) Sections 1029, 1031, and 1031.4.  Every California Peace Officer must be: Free from any disqualifications for employment, including felony convictions (GC 1029). Be legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law (GC 1031);

• and at least 21 yrs of age for specified peace officers (GC 1031.4).

PHYSICAL AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Environment: 

The employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions; extreme cold, extreme heat, potentially hostile environments; extensive public contact. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but may be very loud due to crowd noise, music, sirens, firearm training, etc. Incumbents are required to work various shifts, including evenings and weekends, and may be required to travel to attend meetings or court appearances.

DEFINITION

Under general supervision, subject to exercise of individual judgment and initiative, to perform law enforcement and crime prevention work; to control traffic flow and enforce state and local traffic regulations; and to do related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

An incumbent in this position performs a variety of law enforcement activities during an assigned shift, which may include crime response, patrol, investigation, traffic enforcement, crime prevention and public safety, case presentation and variable shifts. They wear uniforms, carry weapons, drive patrol cars or ride motorcycles and must comply with departmental grooming standards. In addition, they work under potentially adverse and hazardous conditions and are on call.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

The Position 

The San Bruno Police Department is recruiting for Public Safety Dispatchers. The San Bruno Police Department has a long-standing tradition of small-town service with big-city dedication to public safety.  Public Safety Dispatchers are responsible for public safety dispatch and related records management activities. This position operates on a 24-hour, 365 days per year basis, and may be assigned to either a day, swing, or graveyard shift on a regular, rotational basis that includes nights, weekends, and holidays.  Public Safety Dispatchers perform a wide range of duties involving radio, telephone, and computers, applying various procedures and codes. Essential Duties 

• Receives and transmits emergency telephone and radio traffic.   

• Maintains and processes a variety of communications reports, records and radio logs. 

• Operates a dispatch console, uses Computer Aided Dispatch (C.A.D.) System and other computer programs to process information and records.

• May act as Records/Dispatcher Supervisor in their absence.

• Maintains various C.A.D and Record Management Files.

The Senior Transportation Planner will focus on managing projects and programs that support sustainable transportation opportunities for the Town while addressing and improving mobility, safety, environmental, social, and economic conditions around transportation. The Parks and Public Works Department (PPW) is responsible for the maintenance and improvements of the Town's public parks, facilities, streets, and other infrastructure.  Our goal is to efficiently provide residents, businesses, and visitors with the highest quality service possible, with dedication and professionalism.  The Department has five service areas: Engineering, Capital Improvement, Streets and Signals, Parks, and Environmental Services. The Department also collaborates with all Town departments, and external partners and stakeholders.

• Engineering Services: The Engineering team provides services in the areas of encroachment permits and permitting and inspection of other work in the public right of way, including situations where new developments need to provide improvements in the right of way.  
   
• Capital Improvement: The Capital Improvement team develops and constructs capital projects across all Town assets, including improvements to roads, streetlights, parks, and Town buildings. See the annual capital budget for a list of current capital projects.
   
• Streets and Signals: The Streets and Signals team maintains the Town’s roadways, signs, and traffic signals. Traffic plays a big part in this team’s daily work as they seek to meet the needs of the community.  This includes traffic on major streets as well as on neighborhood streets where traffic calming can be a solution.
   
• Park Services: The Park Services team maintains the Town’s parks, trails, open spaces, facility grounds, median islands, parking lot landscaping, downtown planters, and the urban forest as well as administering park use fees and reservations.
   
• Environment Services: The Environmental Services team ensures that the Town is at the forefront of environmental stewardship. This team also manages the Town’s utilities, including the contract with West Valley Collection and Recycling for garbage service Town wide.

About the Town
The Town of Los Gatos is a general law city operating under the Council/Manager form of government. The Town Manager and Town Attorney are appointed and directly report to the Town Council. The Town’s 150 full- and part-time employees are organized into the following departments: Parks & Public Works, Community Development, Police, Library; and Administrative Services.

General Duties

• Provides program area expertise, project support, and coordination and collaborates with Parks and Public Works staff and other Town Departments on complex, highly visible, and politically significant transportation-related policies, projects, and issues
• Evaluates the complex and often sensitive and competing aspects of transportation planning decisions.
• Attends meetings of the Town Council, the Development Review Committee, Planning Commission and/or the Complete Streets and Transportation Commission and other Town Commissions as directed.
• Builds and maintains positive working relationships with coworkers, other Town employees, elected officials, and the general public, exhibiting exceptional customer service and communication skills.
• Participates in regional planning and working groups and serves as the liaison for the boards and working groups as requested.

Grants Management

• Develops and submits transportation-related grant applications from various local, state, and federal funding sources; oversees proper execution and expenditure of grant funds received.

Safe Routes to School Program

• Manages funding for and implementation of the Town’s Safe Routes to School program.

Multi-Modal Transportation Activities

• Manages updates to pedestrian and bicycle masterplans; develops, updates, distributes, and promotes Town programs, policies, educational materials, and projects to improve pedestrian, bicycle, and other forms of mobility and to encourage safe practices of all forms of mobility; serve as staff liaison to the Town’s Complete Streets and Transportation Commission.
• Coordinates planning for bicycle and pedestrian facilities in cooperation with other Town Departments, regional agencies, and community organizations.
• Performs other transportation related duties as assigned.

Parking Programs

• Oversees the Town’s Parking Programs.
• Oversees the work of and administers contracts for transportation and parking consultants.
• Develops policies, procedures, and operational actions related to effective parking management, including periodic review of parking-related policy issues such as rates, time limits, enforcement hours, loading zones, and other issues.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
 
Education: Any combination of training and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in transportation planning, city and regional planning, urban studies, civil engineering, or closely related field.

Experience: Five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in transportation development programs, including two (2) years of project management.  A Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university is desirable.

License and Certification: 

• A California Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record are conditions of initial and continued employment. 
• Possession of a Certificate of Registration as Professional Transportation Planner or Professional Engineer in the State of California, or certification from the American Institute of Certified Planners is highly desirable.

The Extra Help Employee - Senior Nutrition Driver position, under the direction of the Senior  Nutrition Manager, will be responsible for ensuring the orderly and timely delivery of daily meals and services to senior citizens.  The position requires the ability to plan, organize and coordinate the meal preparation and delivery and congregate services in a courteous manner. The position is at-will, temporary, part-time and scheduled for up to twenty five (25) hours per week. 
 

JOB DUTIES

• Responsible for the safe transport of meals following all food safety principles.  
• Accurately pack cold food transport containers with cold food and beverages and ice packs. 
•  Treat all staff, volunteers and seniors with courtesy.  
• Schedule for the pickup and delivery of meals to seniors from the nutrition site.  
• Clean the inside and outside of all food transport containers each day. 
• Upon return to kitchen, unload van and place all equipment in appropriate storage areas. 
• Maintain high standards of sanitation and safety at senior nutrition site.  
   

TEMPORARY LIBRARY SPECIALIST III, PART TIME

Note: Casual non-benefited employees are limited to working no more than twenty-five (25) hours per week and no more than 900 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30). *Seasonal non-benefited employees are limited to working no more than six (6) consecutive months and no more than 900 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30). 
 
 The City of Sunnyvale is seeking to fill the positions of Temporary Library Specialist III. An energetic and highly motivated individual who possesses excellent customer service, technical and interpersonal skills is needed. 
 
 This classification provides clerical support for Library operations and programs by receiving and responding to patron questions, performing circulation duties, and performing duties related to the opening and closing of the Library. This classification differs from the lower-level classification of Library Specialist II in that the Library Specialist II performs the more routine duties.

Essential Job Functions:

• Conducts transactions with the public and employees including the acceptance of payments or fees, registration of new library cards, checking library materials in and out using either manual or automated circulation systems, updating patron records, preparation of requisitions, and receiving reports, distribution of documents, data, or information.

• Provides first point of contact customer service to patrons in person and on the phone.
• Performs daily start-up and closing operations for the computerized circulation system including setting up and taking down self check-out machines, logging on and off computers and restocking the circulation desk.
• Delivers library materials to homebound residents and offsite locations.

If assigned to the Technical Services work group, additional duties include:

• Processes new library materials; applies labels and creates packaging; programs RFID tag, enters information into circulation system and organizes onto carts for processing.
• Corrects call number labels and barcodes; reviews and resolves issues related to media playability.
• Receives and processes receiving slips and invoices for payments.
• Maintains work group's processing manual.
• Develops, maintains, and archives a variety of files, fling systems, and records.
• Collects information from various sources and compiles data for reports.

WORKING CONDITIONS
 Position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting and stooping in the performance of daily activities. The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement and fine coordination in using a computer keyboard. Additionally, the position requires near and far vision in reading reports and work related documents and using a computer. Acute hearing is required when providing phone and personal customer service. The need to lift, drag and push files, paper, books, carts and documents weighing up to 50 pounds is also required.
