THE POSITION

Under general supervision of a Police Sergeant, the Reserve Police Officer is a sworn position assigned to field operations to patrol for the prevention and detection of crime and enforcement of laws and regulations within the philosophy of community oriented policing.  Incumbents are normally expected to solve most work problems independently and to refer to supervisory personnel only those matters which involve policy decisions, technical questions and unusual problems at the entry level and make recommendations at the advanced level.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

• Enforces laws and regulations and apprehends law breakers
• Conducts crime investigations
• Patrols for the prevention and detection of crime and enforcement of laws and regulations
• Responds to radio messages or telephone instructions and investigates reported disorders or crimes
• Notes and reports complaints, accidents, offenses and damages to property
• Reports abandoned or damaged vehicles
• Directs traffic
• Makes arrests, issues citations and warnings
• Prepares reports on arrests and property impounded
• Inspects crime scenes and questions witnesses
• Analyzes clues and information related to criminal activities
• Reviews modus operandi of known criminals
• Reports on the progress of investigations and prepares assigned cases for court
• Serves warrants
• Appears in court to testify regarding arrests and other law enforcement activities
• Writes complex and detailed reports
• Operates patrol vehicles
• Administers first aid or CPR when appropriate
• Develops cooperative working relationships and mutual aid agreements with other local public safety representatives
• Develops and maintains partnership building with the residential and business community as well as the other working departments within the Town of Colma
• Adheres to department rules, regulations, orders and procedures
• Exhibits and encourages behavior that is consistent with the Town’s risk management program and decreases risk of accident or injury to self, employees, residents, visitors and their property
• Performs other related duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

• Modern office technology
• Principles and practices of customer service
• Operations, services and activities of a comprehensive municipal law enforcement program
• California driving regulations and motor vehicle operations

The City of Sausalito Police Department is seeking empathetic, driven, collaborative Police Officer Trainees. The Police Officer Trainee learns to enforce Federal, State, and local laws and to respond to calls for the protection of life and property by attending a basic Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certified training academy to obtain the basic skills and fitness level necessary for the performance of Police Officer duties. This position requires a thorough background investigation, a polygraph/voice stress analysis examination, a psychological assessment, and a medical exam prior to appointment.

 

Police Officer

Description:  Performs law enforcement and crime prevention work, controls traffic flow and enforces state and local regulations. Some essential duties are:

• Responds to calls for service and takes appropriate action to resolve problems
• Renders assistance to citizens in distress
• Initiates investigation of criminal or suspicious activity
• Makes arrests, issues citations, and gives warnings when appropriate
• Enforces all laws without bias
• Conducts business license checks
• Promotes crime prevention and disseminates security information

Qualifications: Must either be currently employed as a sworn Peace Officer in California and have successfully passed an FTO program, or have completed a Certified POST Basic Academy.

Education: Graduation from a U.S. High School or equivalent is required.  Additional education at the college level is preferred.

Licenses:  Possession of or the ability to obtain a valid California driver’s license by the time of hire, and ability to maintain the valid license.

Physical Requirement: Meet standards of adequate physical stature, endurance and agility. Vision: • 20/100 correctable to 20/30, with adequate depth perception and color vision. If soft contacts are worn, no limit on uncorrected distance visual acuity provided soft lenses have been worn for at least six months prior to the physical examination.

Background: • As part of the selection process, successful candidates will undergo a stringent background investigation which will include: confirming all information provided by the candidates, a polygraph test, fingerprinting, psychological and medical examinations, including a drug screening. Candidates may be disqualified at any point in this process. Felony Convictions: • State and Federal Law require that all Police Officers be free from felony conviction and domestic violence. SALARY:  $9,343.57 - $9,810.74 - $10,301.26 - $10,816.32 - $11,357.14 per month. Appointments to this classification are normally made at the first step of this five-step salary range.  Candidates are also eligible for additional salary incentives including Holiday Pay, Education Incentives, and other special assignment pays.

SELECTION PROCESS:

Applications will be screened for completeness.  After an initial screening of applications, those applicants that meet the minimum qualifications and appear to best meet the Department’s need will be invited to participate further in the recruitment process and will be contacted for an oral panel interview.   Candidates must receive a score of 70% or higher on the oral interview exam to be placed on the initial eligibility list.  A limited number of candidates from the eligibility list will be invited for an interview with the Police Commander and Police Chief.  Depending upon the number of candidates in each recruitment set, this process may be altered.    After a mutual interest has been established, a thorough background investigation will be conducted, including fingerprinting and a polygraph.  Upon successfully passing the background investigation, candidates must successfully complete a psychological evaluation, a medical evaluation, and provide proof of legal right to work in the U.S. prior to appointment.  The Police Chief will make the final recommendation for appointment.
