THE POSITION:

This can be a stressful and demanding job located within the Police Department requiring shift work, weekend and holiday duty.  Although hours vary, this is an on-call, as-needed position that is paid hourly.  Using RIMS (Records Information Management System), per diem dispatchers dispatch police and transfer calls to Fire & EMS under emergency conditions; receive residential alarm calls and take calls of an emergency and non-emergency nature from citizens; greets public and assists at the front counter.  Dispatchers must remain calm and tactful under trying conditions, remembering detailed information, and thinking clearly while performing several tasks at once.

To maintain familiarity with the Atherton Police Dispatch Center, we can offer guaranteed 16 hours of shifts spread over a few days per month. You'll provide break relief while also getting a chance to work with another dispatcher. Since we may not always have many shifts available, expectations would be that you would also assist with open shifts/sick calls as needed and not just rely on the 16 hours.

 

San Mateo Medical Center (SMMC) is seeking an experienced Patient Services Specialist (PSS) - Extra-Help.
 
The successful hire will support the clinical team with all registration, eligibility, enrollment, authorization, other administrative tasks, and Admission, Discharge, and Transfer (ADT) activities for SMMC. The PSS serves as the ambassador for SMMC to validate information and educate our patients and guests with the financial process upon arrival to the facility. The PSS verifies all demographic information, validates eligibility, obtain authorizations, collects co-payments, assist with all payor notifications and communication, and enroll patients if needed. The hire will be expected to work holidays and rotating weekends, if needed, to support department needs.
 
The ideal candidate for this position will possess excellent communication skills, including the ability to explain complex medical terminology and medical insurance requirements to individuals with varying levels of medical knowledge. Additionally, they should have strong skills in conflict resolution and problem-solving.

The ideal candidate will also be able to collaborate effectively with the clinical team, work with challenging patients, and assist those who may have language or communication barriers. This position requires keen attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to multi-task. Furthermore, the ideal candidate must be flexible and available for various shifts throughout the week.

NOTE: This is an extra-help, at-will assignment, paid on an hourly basis. Extra-help hours are dependent on the business needs of the department and therefore work hours may vary from week to week. Extra help employees shall not exceed 1,040 hours of work per fiscal year. Some extra help positions are eligible for benefits under the Affordable Care Act. Extra help employees are not guaranteed permanent status at the end of the assignment.

 

Examples Of Duties

 

• Perform difficult, complex, technical, and/or specialized patient services office support and business office support work, which may require the exercise of independent judgment, the application of technical skills, and/or a knowledge of detailed or specialized activities related to the area to which assigned.
• Research and assemble information from a variety of sources for the completion of forms or the preparation of reports; make arithmetic or statistical calculations related to the billing for patient medical services.
• Provide information to the public or to County staff regarding fees, insurance coverages, etc., that requires the use of judgment and the application and interpretation of policies, rules or procedures.
• Interview patients to provide information and obtain necessary financial responsibility and personal data.
• Collect co-payments, assist with payor and recodes accounts if needed.
• Type varied materials/processes using a computer; proofread and check such materials for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with departmental policies and regulations.
• Enter and retrieve data and prepare reports using an on-line or personal computer system; review such reports for accuracy and make corrections as required.
• Oversee and personally perform a variety of office administrative details such as ordering supplies, arranging for the repair of equipment, transmitting information, and keeping reference material up to date.
• May train others in work procedures or direct the work of others on a project or relief basis.
• Check the Patient Access work queues daily to identify accounts that may need immediate attention and resolve them appropriately. 
• To be willing and able to work holidays, if needed, to support the department needs.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

Knowledge of:

• Medical terminology as related to patient services support work.
• Policies and procedures related to patient services office support and hospital or clinic business office activities.
• Office administrative practices and procedures, including filing and the operation of standard office equipment.
• Basic business data processing principles and the use of word processing or computing equipment.
• Proper form for typed materials.

The Position
Utility Workers perform a variety of manual tasks such as building and grounds maintenance, minor equipment repair, and transportation of materials, and supplies in a locked facility.
 
As part of their duties, Utilities Workers assist the skilled trade workers including painters, carpenters, and engineers. Other duties include, but are not limited to: operating and maintaining equipment or hand tools used in the maintenance of buildings, grounds, and facilities; assembling, maintaining, and repairing equipment and furniture; providing complete custodial services to areas such as medical examination rooms, public restrooms, and lobbies; utilizing the assistance of and instructing incarcerated individuals, clients, or other staff to perform work; ordering and receiving supplies, tools, and equipment; delivering supplies to appropriate areas; digging holes, cleaning-out gutters or storm drains, and disposing of debris; operating a car, van, or light delivery vehicle to transport materials; operating and maintaining power tools, hand tools, and specialized equipment; and performing related duties as assigned.

As a Utility Worker, you will be responsible for a variety of tasks, which may include but are not limited to the following:

• Lift, move, load, arrange, and transport materials or supplies such as furniture, mattresses, heavy equipment, records, mail, money, or waste materials.
• Operate and maintain equipment or hand tools used in the maintenance of buildings, grounds, and facilities.

The Utility Worker position may be assigned to one of multiple sections within the Department.  At this time, up to three different sections of the Facilities and Capital Projects Division are seeking qualified applicants.  More information on the various Divisions and sections of the Department is available at:  https://www.smcgov.org/publicworks/our-organization. 

 

The Building Services section provides janitorial services and a variety of building services for more than 70 County facilities, with over 4 million in total square footage. Core activities of the section include interior office maintenance, exterior office maintenance, receipt and delivery of supplies, room set-up and office configuration, and parking control. If hired into the Building Services section, additional duties may be:

• Provide complete custodial services and support to the custodial staff.
• Provide support and services to our parking structures and parking enforcement which may include providing custodial services and issuing parking citations.
• Maintain and clean all outdoor premises which may include pressure washing, window washing, operating a sweeper, etc. 

 

The Facilities Maintenance & Operations Redwood City section is responsible for the operation, maintenance, installation and repair of machinery and equipment in County operated buildings. This includes HVAC systems, boilers, lighting systems, refrigeration, generators, water treatment, and emergency power systems. It also includes crafts services such as carpentry, painting, plumbing, and lock smithing services required to maintain County facilities. If hired into the Facilities Maintenance & Operations (FM&O) section, additional skills needed, and duties may include: 

• Identify weeds from plants.
• Work independently.
• Dig and set sign and fence posts.
• Attached signs to wood and/or metal posts.

 

Construction Services provides competitive professional crafts services beyond the scope of routine maintenance provided by the Facilities Operations and Maintenance section, and contracts with the County and Cities to provide carpentry, graffiti abatement, and lighting district services. Trades represented include electrical, plumbing, carpentry and painting.  If hired into the Construction Services section, additional duties may be:

• Assist trades with painting, carpentry, light electrical, and clean-up of work site.
• Empty trash at offices and vacuum floors.
• Dig trenches or post holes on various projects.
• Handle small moving jobs for other departments.
• Knowledge of how to use hand and power tools.

 

Qualifications

 

Utility Worker I ($28.35 - $35.45/Hourly) is the entry or trainee level class in this series. Initially, under close supervision, incumbents perform the more routine duties while receiving on-the-job instruction and gaining practical experience. As experience is gained, there is greater independence of action within established guidelines. Incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency which meet the qualifications of the higher-level class.

Utility Worker II ($29.90 - $37.38/Hourly) is the experienced journey level class in this series. Under general supervision, incumbents independently perform the full range of duties. All the positions are characterized by the presence of fairly clear guidelines from which to make decisions and the availability of supervision in non-routine circumstances. Incumbents should demonstrate a thorough knowledge of operations and procedures and the ability to independently accomplish day-to-day tasks under normal conditions and to instruct others.

 

Education and Experience:

• Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is: One year of experience providing building and facility maintenance and minor equipment repair.

Knowledge of:

• Methods, materials, operations, tools, and practices used in moving, loading, arranging, and transporting materials, records, and supplies.
• Principles and techniques used in basic custodial services and minor equipment repair.
• Fixtures, building hardware, and equipment.
• Safety regulations, precautions, and practices.

The Department of Public Works of the County of San Mateo is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Assistant/Associate/Associate Civil Engineer. 
 
There are currently three (3) vacancies in the Department of Public Work’s Design and Construction Section. This recruitment will be used to fill current and future vacancies in either the Design and Construction or Utilities and Watershed Protection sections.

Design and Construction 
The Assistant/Associate/Associate Civil Engineer assigned to the Design and Construction Section would perform AutoCAD/Civil3D work and work on Public Works infrastructure projects such as roads, drainage, retaining walls, bridges, sewer, and other public works facilities including the planning, designing, preparation of construction bid documents, overseeing construction activities in the field, and performing inspection of public works infrastructures.  This position may also involve the application and management of outside grants associated with Public Works facilities.

Utilities and Watershed Protection
The Utilities and Watershed Protection Section oversees 30 Special Districts that include flood control, drainage, domestic water, sanitary sewer, and street lighting. The primary responsibilities of the position include the design and management of various capital improvement projects from the conceptual stage to construction close-out. Additional duties include assisting with the day-to-day operational tasks of administering these Districts.

Assistant Engineer is the entry or trainee level class of this series. Under immediate supervision employees perform first level professional civil engineering field and office work while acting in a trainee capacity in connection with the planning, design, construction and maintenance of a wide variety of civil engineering projects. This class is flexibly staffed with Associate Engineer and incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining experience and demonstrating necessary proficiency.
 
Associate Engineer is the journey level job classification and is responsible for routine office or field projects. Employees are expected to be fully competent to independently perform a full range of duties requiring a high level of technical expertise, and some periodic supervisory responsibilities. Employees may also serve as a resident engineer on smaller, less complex construction projects.
 
Associate Civil Engineer is the registered journey level classification in the engineering series. At this level, a high degree of technical expertise and some periodic lead responsibilities are required. Under general supervision, incumbents may perform a variety of professional engineering tasks in such areas as planning, design, traffic engineering & operations and construction inspection of roads, park trails, bridges, drainage, sanitary sewer systems, water supply, and other public works projects. Associate Civil Engineers may provide lead direction to other staff in completing projects of greater difficulty and complexity. Incumbents will be required to perform field work in support of the planning, design, and/or construction inspection of public works projects.
 
NOTE: Assistant/Associate Civil Engineer differs from the Associate Engineer classification in that Associate Civil Engineers are registered as professional engineers in the State of California and may provide lead direction to other staff in completing projects of greater difficulty and complexity.

The salary range for Assistant Engineer is $100,318.40- $125,340.80 annually.
The salary range for Associate Engineer is $118,664.00- $148,324.80 annually.
The salary range for Associate Civil Engineer is $132,828.80- $166,025.60 annually.

The ideal candidate for this position will be:

• Technically knowledgeable and experienced in the principles and practices of civil engineering, public works design, construction, and/or maintenance. 
• An effective communicator, both orally and in writing; able to represent the County in meetings and presentations to various groups including property owners, community groups, regulatory and other governmental agencies, and the public.
• Customer-focused and interpersonally effective in dealing with staff, engineers, contractors, and the public, and in coordinating with law enforcement agencies, emergency responders, and other agencies when necessary.

The Summer Internship Program will run for 12 weeks from June 9 to August 29, 2025. The Sheriff’s Office is searching for up to 20 Summer Interns to perform a variety of administrative functions throughout the following divisions of our office:

• Corrections
• Court Security & Transportation
• Criminal Records
• Emergency Services
• Fiscal / Accounting
• Forensic Lab
• Patrol
• Property & Evidence
• Sheriff’s Activities League
• Technical Services
• Training

Interns will work a maximum of 20 hours per week. Work schedules will fall during the standard work week -- Monday through Friday, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. There may be room for scheduling flexibility to be further discussed during the placement portion of the hiring process.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Candidates selected to fill these internship positions must submit to a thorough pre-employment background investigation prior to receiving a final offer of employment.

Qualifications:

About the Position

The City of San Carlos is seeking a full-time Associate Engineer in our Public Works Department. This position performs professional and technical civil engineering work in support of the City’s public works and private development projects. Responsibilities will range from simpler projects and to more complex ones. Employees in this job class provide general engineering support and direction to a variety of public and private projects. Projects worked on may include civil works projects including: roads, drainage, grading, buildings, water and wastewater pipelines and treatment facilities, tanks, generators, parks and landscaping, bike paths, environmental mitigation and other related subjects.

 

The Associate Engineer is distinguished from the Assistant Engineer by the level of experience in the field of municipal engineering and the level of job knowledge.  This is a more specialized class wherein incumbents are charged with performing a wide variety of complex engineering assignments and having a much broader range of knowledge, skills and abilities.

 

Employees in this classification work under general supervision of the Principal Engineer. Employees in the Engineer positions are not directly responsible for the supervision and evaluation of other engineering staff; however, they may provide supervision of work product to other engineers, inspectors, technicians or intern staff.

 

Essential Duties

• Plans, directs, participates and effectively completes moderately complex projects. This technical work involves engineering, surveying, construction or other activities related to the civil engineering profession.
• Manages assigned projects, serving as the project lead and ensuring that all aspects of the project are addressed and completed professionally.
• Supervises the work products of project team members, including technicians or intern staff.
• Administers consultant contracts and oversees consultants for services such as design, construction management, construction inspection, soil testing, biological studies, and other related tasks.
• Reviews, prepares construction drawings and specifications for a variety of City public works projects using AutoCAD and related civil design software to process projects through the City.
• Reviews and evaluates preliminary and final plans and specifications for private development.
• Prepares Requests for Proposals for support work such as surveying or biological studies.
• inspects and evaluates ongoing public works and development projects to ensure compliance with plans and specifications and regulatory agency requirements.
• Conducts surveys, and/or assists survey personnel in obtaining field data and conducts a variety of field construction tests for compliance purposes.
• Verifies and maintains appropriate records and files; prepares comprehensive technical reports and agenda reports related to assignments. Presents reports as needed.
• Represents the Public Works Department at various meetings.
• Performs a variety of computer and tracking support functions.
• Interacts with the public at the public counter answering questions and issuing permits for construction in the City’s right of way.
• Prepares Requests for Qualifications/Proposals (RFQ/Ps) for design, construction management and support services as needed.
• Provides preliminary and final review of development proposals such as subdivisions maps, parcel maps and subdivision improvements.
• Reviews private development submittals for compliance with State and local regulations and specifications, working with project proponents to make necessary corrections.
• Effectively plans, organizes, schedules and implements projects.
• Perform studies, research files, records, plans, and maps.
• Gathers, assembles, analyzes and interprets field data, and prepares reports.
• Coordinates with other departments as needed to complete assignments.
• Provides planning, specification, calculation and cost estimating review of others’ work.
• Reviews construction of projects and assists in maintaining construction documents.
• Reviews and evaluates development plans, maps, and related documents for conformance to City, State, and Federal codes. Reviews calculations and issues permits.
• Gathers traffic data, maintains traffic records, conducts traffic studies, and prepares traffic reports.
• Provides assistance to other City employees regarding engineering related matters.
• Administers consultant contracts for moderately complex projects or service contracts, effectively monitoring costs and deadlines.
• Manages assigned projects by acting as lead person on the project, ensuring that all aspects of the project are addressed and the project is completed in a professional manner.
• Assists in preparing and managing budgets for operation and capital improvement programs.
• Coordinates work with regulatory agencies and private entities, completing public relations work as needed or assigned.
• Prepare reports and delivers presentations to City and private groups as assigned.
• Applies for and obtains permits from local, state and federal agencies.
• Applies for and administers grants.
