Program Specialist: Adult Sports Specialist

About this role
We are seeking responsible, reliable and enthusiastic individuals to manage and oversee for Adult Sports Leagues. This position will be responsible for staffing and managing all Adult Sport games on a field or in a gym, including scorekeepers and communication with the sport official’s association, and managing the adult sports scheduling and score reporting online. This is a part time, non-benefited position, up to 30 hours per week and limited to 960 hours in a fiscal year (July-June). You must be available to work Monday-Friday during the hours of 4:30pm-10:15pm and occasional weekends. This position is year-round.

What You’ll Do

• Greet, acknowledge, and interactive with patrons and sports officials in a friendly and professional manner
• Ensures all game related information are uploaded to website in a timely manner for each game
• Keeps games moving, maintains game rules and manages game conflicts
• Ensures use of sport program supplies follows the amount prearranged by the department budget
• Oversees and managers Adult Sport League games and is present before and after designated scheduled game times
• Assists in tracking payroll for all per diem workers
• If necessary, will cover shifts for scorekeeping or gym attendant when no subs are available
• Back up to the field preparation position
• Manage the gym schedule, staffing and be a back up to rental officers, if necessary
• Takes game photos of all Sport League games
• Provide excellent customer service.

The Newark Recreation and Community Services Department is looking for Senior Lifeguards for our fantastic swim lesson and aquatic programs and the upcoming to work at the year-round Silliman Activity & Family Aquatic Center. We are looking for positive, patient, motivated, self-driven individuals that have a passion for working in aquatics and with children, who wish to make a difference in a child's life by teaching them lifelong water skills! Swimming experience is required. Additional program training will be provided once hired. Those that are successful in the application review will be invited to attend an interview either in person, or via ZOOM and complete an in-person skills assessment. Please note that this position requires you to work in an indoor aquatic environment subject to warm/humid temperatures.

• Interprets and enforces the field user policy and park policies to the public and sports user groups.
• Monitors park areas by foot to assist the general public and sports groups in the use of the park areas.
• Responds to inquiries and complaints and ensures safe use of the facilities.
• Documents all emergency and first-aid contacts.
• Reports possible safety hazards and/or unsanitary conditions to the Recreation Supervisor.
• Assist in keeping accurate records of forms, inventory and supplies
• Supports City or Department-sponsored events as required.

You must be available to work Monday-Friday during the hours of 6pm-10:15pm, from early March – mid-November.

PROGRAM LEADER (SPORTS AND FITNESS)

Salary Range: $17.37 to $23.15/hour, DOE

 

This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefitted position; 15-20 hours per week (not to exceed 950 hours per calendar year); predominantly afternoon/evening schedule, some weekends.

 

DEFINITION

 

The Town seeks gym monitors, scorekeepers, and leaders for a variety of youth and adult sports. Sports may include, but are not limited to basketball, softball, and bocce ball. Sports knowledge is preferred. All staff will be cross-trained for multiple sports. CPR/FA certification is recommended but not required.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

 

Program Leader receives supervision from the Program Coordinator and/or Program

Assistant.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

Essential duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Scorekeeping and gym monitoring.
• Completing program score sheets, reports, and timesheets according to deadlines.
• Attending monthly staff meetings.
• Various tasks related to the implementation of sports programs.

DEFINITION: Under general supervision, plan, organize and provide leadership for children grades 1st – 5th . for an onsite afterschool program. Program hours are M, T, Th, F PM 2:30pm – 5:30pm and Wed. 1:30pm – 5:30pm Approximately 15 – 20 hours a week.

Experienced and passionate music teachers are needed to teach music lessons to various ages on various instruments. Must be able to teach participants how to play various instruments at various individualized levels.

Our current openings are in the Recreation Division and may be in the areas of the Afterschool Youth Recreation Program, Aquatics Program or Facility Attendant. This position will report directly to the Recreation Program Coordinator or Recreation Program Supervisor and will work various hours throughout the week, including evenings and weekends

 

DEFINITION

Under general supervision, a Recreator III independently performs assigned tasks which serve the public use of municipal recreation facilities and other duties as required.

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Open and close facilities following established guidelines, set up equipment needed for facility programs, perform routine maintenance and cleanup for assigned facilities, collect fees for facility use, maintain order and discipline in assigned facilities and programs by enforcing City and Departmental policies, may facilitate in assigned program areas, may supervise other part-time staff, volunteers, or court workers as assigned, and maintain accurate records and reports. May include specific assignments such as senior swim instructor, senior lifeguard, facility attendant and assisting with after school or summer programs. Other duties as assigned.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Knowledge of: General facility operations, intermediate lesson instruction techniques for assigned area, and safety practices for assigned programs.

 

Ability to: Follow written and oral instructions, meet and communicate effectively with members of the public, carry out assignments requiring average physical strength such as setting up tables and chairs, learn and progress in this position, direct others, understand and enforce written and oral rules, regulations and policies, solve minor disciplinary problems, interact positively and cooperate with co-workers, respond politely to customers, work as a team member, function under demanding time pressure, respond in a positive manner to supervision, and attend work and perform duties on a regular and consistent basis.

 

Experience: A minimum of two years working or volunteering with people in a customer service position.

 

Education: Graduation from high school or equivalent.

License: Possession of a valid Class C California Driver’s License is desirable.

Certification:  Possession of an American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification is required to work in the Aquatics area as a lifeguard.  Possession of an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification is desirable to work in the Aquatics area as swim instructor.

Monitor youth sports programs within the facilities; address participant and parent concerns; provide lead direction to sports officials. Routinely adhere to and maintain a positive attitude toward City and Department goals.

 

Knowledge Of:

Basic office/customer service skills (answering phone calls, talking to patrons etc.)

 

Emphasis Two: LIFEGUARD:

 

Example of Duties:

Educate patrons in water safety, provide patrons with a safe aquatic environment, perform lifeguard secondary duties, and instruct swim lessons. Promote aquatic programs, assisting senior guard, and aquatics assistant. Conduct rescue operations and administer CPR and First Aid. Direct communication and contact with swimmers and the public.

 

Knowledge of:

Basic child guidance principles and practices. General techniques of various swim strokes.

 

Ability to:

Be active, lift and/or carry equipment and supplies. Work in a leadership role with children and adults

 

Emphasis Three: YOUTH PROGRAM LEADER:

 

Examples of Duties:

Assists in preparing instructional, craft, and other materials; participates in, and encourages, play activities with the children; may assist in providing tutorial and/or remedial activities in small groups. Provides support duties for child development services in Youth Services programs; prepares and serves snacks based on established guidelines; performs clean-up and food storage duties. Assists with maintaining required and appropriate documentation; including observation notes, logs, and other records. May participate in public relations, outreach, and community education activities. Attends staff training, workshops, and courses as directed by supervisor

Assists in daily operation of Doelger Senior Center supporting volunteers and programs.  Contributes to welcoming and safe environment, able to respectfully set boundaries.  May participate in community outreach and education efforts.  Attends trainings as directed by supervisor.

 

Knowledge of: 

Superior customer service; basic office procedures; Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher); volunteer management and Registration management applications; and programs and service providers for older adults.

 

Ability to:

Communicate effectively verbally and in writing; maintain confidential records; work well with older adults (50+); organize schedules; meet deadlines; learn on the job; collaborate with patrons, volunteers and colleagues across City departments.  Fluency in Spanish, Cantonese or Tagalog a plus.
