The Parks & Recreation Department is responsible for managing and maintaining the City's beautiful park system, recreation facilities, pools, and cemeteries and providing programs, services and activities that enhance residents’ lives and contribute to the health and wellness of the community. The Position:
 This recruitment is for two Recreation Coordinator positions. 

Recreation Coordinator, Performing Arts Unit, Community Recreation Center

The Performing Arts Unit offers year-round programming in theater, dance, music, and choir, led by a team of contract instructors and part-time staff. One of our cornerstone offerings is the Youth Theater Program—now in its 55th year—which stages four full-scale productions annually. We’re looking for a passionate, organized, and collaborative recreation professional who shares our love for theater and the performing arts. This role is key to delivering high-quality, inclusive, and engaging programs, classes, and performances. Recreation Coordinator, Active Older Adults, Senior Center

The Senior Center serves a thriving community of over 1,000 members and welcomes hundreds of visitors each day for both drop-in and fee-based programs. The incumbent may be required to oversee a specific recreation facility, perform routine program development or oversight, and take specific responsibility for the coordination of as-needed staff and contract employees. Performs related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Minimum Requirements:

• A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with a degree in Recreation, Recreation & Leisure Studies, Tourism, Leisure & Event Planning, Social Science, Kinesiology, or closely related field; and
• Two (2) years of full-time paid experience coordinating a recreation program, including the supervision of recreation leadership personnel.  These two (2) years may be a combination of full-time, part-time, or internship experience (2,000 hours of part-time and/or internship experience are equivalent to one (1) year of full-time work experience).

For Aquatics Program:

• Minimum of two (2) years of experience in various aquatics programs and in aquatic environment emergency response.

Possible Substitution for Education:

• Graduation from high school or possession of a G.E.D. and five (5) years of additional paid full-time experience in the supervision of recreation personnel in a public recreation setting may be substituted for the college graduation requirement.

Desirable Qualifications:

• Experience with program budgeting and program marketing is highly desirable; and
• Experience using recreation registration software program is desirable.

LICENSE(S) AND/OR CERTIFICATION(S)

• Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license is required at the time of appointment and for the duration of employment; and
• CPR and First Aid is required within six (6) months of appointment and for the duration of employment.

For Aquatics Program:

• Title 22 First Aid and CPR certification are required at the time of appointment and for the duration of employment; and
• Lifeguard Training Certificate and Lifeguard Training Instructor Certificate are required at the time of appointment and for the duration of employment.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience with program budgeting and program marketing is highly desirable;
• Experience using recreation registration software program is desirable; and
• When assigned to the Aquatics Program, Water Safety Instructor Certifications or other recognized Swim Lesson Instruction Certification is desirable. 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

• May be required to work evening shifts, weekends, and unusual hours to meet program and event requirements; and
• Must be able to perform all of the essential functions of the job.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The Recreation Coordinator is an advanced journey level classification responsible for coordinating programs for a specified recreation program or recreation facility. Incumbents regularly work on complex tasks that require discretion and independent judgement. Assignments are given with general guidelines and incumbents are responsible for establishing objectives, timelines, and methods to deliver services. The Recreation Coordinator differs from the lateral classification of Recreation Coordinator - Therapeutics in that the lateral classification specializes in therapeutics programs, whereas, the Recreation Coordinator performs general recreation work. The Recreation Coordinator is distinguished from the higher-level classification of Recreation Supervisor in that the later primarily performs supervisory functions over recreation programs, facilities, events, and/or parks and supervises full-time personnel.

Position Duties:

The Department is recruiting for part-time, unbenefited Lifeguard and Instructor Lifeguard positions in the Recreation Services Division (RS) for the Citywide Aquatics programming.

The Lifeguard classification is covered by the Minimum Wage Police and pay starts at $17.95 hourly.

The Instructor Lifeguard classification is covered by the Pay Floor Rate and pay starts at $29.45 hourly.

These positions may be required to work variable shifts between the hours of 6:00 AM – 8:00 PM, Monday – Saturday during the dates of June 16, 2025 - August 8, 2025. Additionally, a MANDATORY training for both Lifeguard and Instructor Lifeguard positions will take place starting the week of June 9, 2025 - June 13, 2025, from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM. These positions are part-time, unbenefited with a limit of less than 20 hours per week or less than 1,040 hours per year. There is no guarantee of hours or longevity. All programs adhere to Santa Clara County, Public Health guidelines to ensure the health and well-being of staff. Face coverings and Personal Protective Equipment are provided. Staff may assist with daily health screenings, cleaning, and sanitization in City programs following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines. 

Note: Candidates are not required to possess the Lifeguard Training certificate at the time of completing the application or to interview for the position. If selected for the position of Lifeguard, the Citywide Aquatics program will offer Lifeguard Training certification classes, if needed. If selected for the position of Instructor Lifeguard, the Citywide Aquatics program will be offering Lifeguard Training and American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor's (WSI) certification classes, if needed. The American Red Cross Lifeguard Training certification age requirement is at least 15 years old and the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification age requirement is at least 16 years old. 

If selected to move forward in the conditional offer process, the Lifeguard certification pre course swimming skills test that consists of the following:

• a 300-yard swim using front crawl or breaststroke.
• a 2-minute tread using legs only
• the ability to retrieve a 10-lb dive weight from 7 ft deep, to the surface and swim 20 yds with the weight, using legs only and exit the pool without using a ladder within 100 seconds. 

Lifeguard:  Lifeguards supervise the conduct of swimmers to maintain safety in the swimming pool. Lifeguards also enforce swimming pool rules and may participate in swim instruction programs; observe swimmers in swimming pools; provide warnings to those who violate the safety rules of the pool and expelling them, if necessary, because of willful disobedience of the rules; rescues swimmers who are in distress; and administers artificial respiration when necessary, according to the prescribed method. Lifeguards may also train and direct the work of lower-level workers as assigned and participate in pool maintenance. Possession of a current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training’s Authorization Certificate is REQUIRED for the position of Lifeguard. 

Instructor Lifeguard:  In addition to the duties identified for Lifeguards, Instructor Lifeguards also organize and conduct swimming instruction classes for beginners, intermediate, or advanced swimmers at a swimming pool. Duties will include teaching swimming to children, adult individuals, and groups. Instructor Lifeguards may officiate at competitive swim meets. Instructor Lifeguards must also be able to instruct in the techniques of swimming and lifesaving. Possession of a current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor’s Authorization Certificate (WSI) is REQUIRED for the position of Instructor Lifeguard.

ABOUT THE POSITION
The City of Gilroy is hiring two part-time Recreation Specialist positions, each with a distinct focus. One position will support Youth, Adaptive, and Senior programs, while the other will focus specifically on serving the East Gilroy neighborhood with various recreation programs. Both roles will involve leading programs for socio-economically disadvantaged youth, teens, and adults, managing part-time staff, program planning, administering grants, and collaborating with local organizations and public agencies.

Overview:

The Program Administrator (Contracts Supervisor) plans, organizes, supervises, and coordinates the procurement by contract of professional consultant services (architectural engineering "A/E" and non-A/E consultants) and specialized Valley Water activities, and coordinates and oversees contract administration activities.  The Program Administrator works on contracts that are highly complex and sensitive in nature, where substantial judgment and initiative are essential in making recommendations and resolving problems. ABOUT THE POSITION

The City of Gilroy is currently recruiting for a full-time Senior Civil Engineer or an Engineer II (dependent on qualifications) for the Engineering Division of the Public Works Department. In this exciting opportunity the incumbent will play a pivotal role in shaping infrastructure and overseeing key projects vital to the growth and development of the City of Gilroy.  The Senior Civil Engineer will work under the direction of the City Engineer and/or the Public Works Director and is afforded the authority and discretion to oversee the day-to-day operations of the Capital Improvement Program (CIP) Section. The Senior Civil Engineer classification is an exempt, mid-management level position. 

The Engineer II will play a critical role in designing, managing and delivering Capital Improvement projects that improve essential city infrastructure. From planning and budgeting to implementation, your work will positively affect thousands of residents daily, supporting the city’s mission to create a safe, connected, and vibrant community. Although this position is dedicated to CIP, in order to appropriately respond to community needs, the Engineer II may also provide support to the Land Development and Transportation engineering sections, so adaptability and flexibility are keys to success in this position. The Public Works Department is responsible for providing high quality, safe and effective maintenance, operation and construction of streets, parks, storm drainage and related infrastructure. The Department is under new leadership with a renewed focus on master infrastructure planning, proactive capital maintenance and replacement, traffic engineering and customer service. Pipeline public projects include completion of the Civic Center Master Plan, design and bid of the new Santa Teresa Fire Station, a $7 million pavement rehabilitation project, a $3 million San Ysidro Park remodel project, and completion of Traffic Impact Fee Study. The City is processing multiple large private projects including an almost one million square foot Amazon data center as well as multiple residential subdivisions and multi-family projects.

 The Utilities Department is a newly formed department focused on delivering exceptional water and wastewater services. • Senior Environmental Engineer - Wastewater: Must possess a valid Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of California. If an applicant possesses all of the minimum qualifications, except registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of California, the applicant may (at city’s sole discretion) be allowed up to one (1) year to obtain registration as a condition of employment.
