The City of San Rafael is seeking a motivated and civic-minded Communications Intern to support equitable engagement through the City’s external communications, digital content, and public engagement initiatives.  This temporary, part-time role is ideal for individuals interested in learning more about local government and public communications.  This is a part-time/temporary position, limited to 1,000 hours worked within a fiscal year (July 1 through June 30) that receives no City benefits.  This position will work for up to 29 hours per week (days/hours may vary).

Under the direction of the Civic Engagement Manager, the Intern will assist with day-to-day communications tasks such as social media content creation, newsletter writing, website updates, and public information campaigns.  This is an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on experience and contribute to real-time public service storytelling and information sharing. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (may include but are not limited to the following):    

• Assist in designing, writing, and editing content for a variety of communications platforms including websites, social media, e-newsletters, flyers, presentations, and press materials.
• Help document City programs and events through photography, videography, and brief interviews.
• Support the development and scheduling of social media content across platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Nextdoor.
• Help maintain and update the City’s website and digital newsletters.
• Contribute to internal content calendars and project trackers.
• Participate in community outreach efforts, including tabling at events, supporting public meetings, and gathering community feedback. 
• Track analytics and metrics from newsletters, social media platforms, and web traffic; monitor media coverage and social media engagement; compile analytics reports to inform communication strategies.
• Support translation coordination and multilingual content production if bilingual (Spanish-English) skills are present.

IDEAL CANDIDATE:
The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, curious about public service, a strong communicator, and excited to learn in a hands-on environment.  They are a self-starter who can write clearly and adapt to a range of topics and formats.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

• Basic principles and practices of public communications, social media management, and/or media relations.
• Writing and editing for clarity, style, and grammar.
• Social media platforms, email marketing tools, and content management systems (e.g., WordPress, Mailchimp).
• Basic graphic design tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite) and video editing platforms (preferred).
• Cultural competency and sensitivity in engaging diverse communities.
• Highly preferred:  fluent, professional-level Spanish and English (both written and spoken).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS DESIRED:

• Fluency in English and Spanish (written and verbal) is highly desired.
• At least 1 year of experience in communications, public-engagement, media, or related work (internships included).
• OR currently enrolled in or recently completed a degree or certificate program in communications, journalism, graphic design, public relations, public administration, or a related field.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Canva, and social media platforms.

WORK SCHEDULE:

• This is a hybrid, temporary position limited to a maximum of 1,000 hours per fiscal year (July 1 thru June 30.
• Part-time up to 30 hours per week.  Flexible scheduling is available, with occasional evening or weekend hours required for community events.

The Position:

Accounting Technician I

This is the entry-level class within the Accounting Technician series in the classified service. Performs related duties as assigned.

Accounting Technician II

This is the second level classification in the Accounting Technician series. Performs advanced paraprofessional accounting work including the maintenance of financial records, systems or transactions. Interfaces with other City departments, auditors, business entities, governmental jurisdiction and general public, giving and receiving information regarding area of financial responsibility. May perform more complex processing and reconciliation work and related duties as assigned.

These are seasonal positions, limited to 1,000 hours worked within a fiscal year (July 1 through June 30) that receive no City benefits.  Job training is anticipated to begin the week of June 23, 2025 and this assignment will run through September 30, 2025 at the latest.  Shifts will average 7.5 hours per day, 5 days per week.  This is a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience working for one of the finest departments in the State.

This position is fully funded through the Marin Wildfire Prevention Authority (MPWA) and will directly support the mission of wildfire preparedness and mitigation, and community safety.

THE POSITION:

The City of San Rafael Fire Department is seeking customer service and public safety focused individuals to join the wildfire mitigation team. Under supervision, inspectors will perform a variety of wildfire prevention duties with a focus on one-on-one education via property wildfire risk evaluations.  The Inspector’s efforts will support resident compliance with City and State Fire codes.

The customer-service oriented positions will support the City’s and Marin Wildfire Fire Prevention Authorities (MWPA)’s goals. The ideal candidate will be able to connect and inspire individual action among our diverse community by explaining complex concepts in easy-to-understand ways.  Inspectors will utilize tablets and other technology to document findings and interactions in the field.

Our highly qualified candidate will be able to work effectively in small teams or independently and clearly communicate wildfire safety-related information to residents from various backgrounds.  We are looking for people who have sound judgment and can communicate effectively with others.  They will need to be able to follow both verbal and written instructions, engage effectively with the public and work harmoniously with our team. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (may include but are not limited to the following):    

• Perform defensible space inspections and wildfire risk evaluations in accordance with San Rafael Municipal Code 4.12.
• Investigates public and referred public agency complaints.
• Provide guidance to residents on suggested and required home hardening and defensible space strategies. 
• Provide residents with appropriate support resources and programs.
• Increase awareness, knowledge and actions implemented by individuals and communities to reduce human loss and property damage from wildfires.
• Collects, enters, maintains, and disseminates data pertaining to fire prevention; reconciles reports, files and records.
• Composes letters and reports based on field notes.
• Collect and input data and images into electronic devices.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

• Communicate clearly and respectfully to residents and stakeholders.
• Learn and apply City and State Fire Codes and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards.
• Provide clear and concise written reports free of grammar and spelling errors.
• Utilize personal computers, tablets, and related software including the Microsoft Office Suite, mapping, and database tools.
• Independently conduct fire (defensible space) inspections.
• Apply technical knowledge and follow proper inspection techniques.
• Be self-motivated, work independently to complete assigned duties and responsibilities in a timely manner.
• Interpret and explain fire prevention services, policies and procedures.
• Build and maintain positive working relationships with stake holders to ensure that assigned fire prevention coordination efforts are successful.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS DESIRED:

• Graduation from high school or equivalent and any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities in qualifying.

The Environmental Services Department is currently looking to hire ONE regular full-time Environmental Compliance Inspector. The list established from this recruitment may be used to fill future Environmental Compliance Inspector vacancies as a regular or term-limited position.

The Environmental Services Department provides comprehensive and innovative environmental utility services for Sunnyvale's residents and businesses, and facilitates initiatives to achieve the City's sustainability objectives. The department brings together technical, operational, and administrative professional disciplines to form its dedicated and dynamic team.

These programs help protect our waterways and the San Francisco Bay by ensuring that businesses and residents are implementing best management practices to prevent water pollution and are in compliance with Federal and local water quality regulations. Environmental Compliance Inspectors work closely with a wide variety of businesses to ensure that the composition of their wastewater is in compliance with City requirements and does not compromise the integrity of the City's Water Pollution Control Plant or the sewer collection system. Such businesses range from aerospace and semiconductor manufacturers to dental offices and restaurants. The inspection team is also advancing multiple stormwater initiatives such as trash reduction and controls for pollutants of concern such as mercury and PCBs.

Under general direction, performs journey level inspection and enforcement activities on industrial, commercial, and residential discharges to the sewage and storm drain system for compliance with codes and laws regulating waste processes; and does other related work, as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Education/Experience

The minimum qualifications for education and experience can be met in the following way:

A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, microbiology, environmental science, environmental or chemical engineering,  AND
 
One year of increasingly responsible experience in the collection and analysis of industrial or other wastewater/water samples, or one year of increasingly responsible experience in conducting environmental or regulatory inspections.

Licenses/Certificates

Possession at time of hire and continued maintenance of a valid Class C California driver's license and a safe driving record.

Salary:  $46.48 - $59.32 Hourly

What's the Role and What You'll Do
We’re looking for a highly motivated, reliable and skilled individual to join the Public Works Department as a Public Works Inspector I/II. What You'll Do
Review plans and specifications of assigned project; attend preconstruction conferences as assigned.

Inspect a variety of public works improvements such as utilities, streets, sidewalks, gutters, and other off-site construction; check line, grade, size, elevation, and location of structures for conformance with specifications and regulations.

Inspect a variety of public works construction projects such as City parks, traffic signals, roadway improvements, utilities, and building renovations. Verify conformance with project plans / specifications, and measure field quantities for payment.

Observe work during progress and upon completion; ensure that safety procedures are followed.

The City of Sebastopol is looking for a respectful, compassionate, empathetic Police Officer Trainee. The selected candidate must be currently enrolled or enrolled at a future date as a self-sponsored recruit in a certified Peace Officer Standards & Training Council (P.O.S.T.) Police Academy. The Police Officer Trainee is a non-sworn, training-level classification requiring no prior law enforcement experience. The incumbent performs a variety of entry-level police support duties in a learning capacity. The selected candidate will assist and observe Police Officers and civilian police personnel.

The successful candidate will attend the Police Academy to obtain a Basic P.O.S.T. Certificate of Completion, and perform related work which may require public contact but not the enforcement of laws. Police Officer Trainees attend a POST certified Police Academy, which follows a standardized curriculum in order to provide them with basic training in various aspects of policing, many of which are prescribed by law and/or statute.

The Accounting Manager leads a team of 10.5 Full Time Equivalent positions and plans, organizes, directs and coordinates the activities of the accounting division which includes functions such as all aspects of accounting services, accounts payable, accounts receivable and debt and investment management. This position is also responsible for regulatory federal and state reporting, acts as the staff liaison with external auditors, leads the preparation of the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR), and provides highly complex staff assistance to the Director of Finance.

The ideal candidate will have experience working closely with the public and coordinating workflow in a fast-paced library circulation environment. They will possess leadership skills and demonstrate the ability to provide excellent customer service to members of the public and staff alike. Under general supervision of the Fleet & Facilities Superintendent, our Equipment Mechanics perform both routine and complex repairs, diagnoses, and preventive maintenance services on a variety of automotive, construction, and specialized municipal vehicles and equipment, both gasoline and diesel fueled. The employee in the Senior Equipment Mechanic job classification is required to be fully trained in all fleet shop procedures and have strong knowledge of all apparatuses, vehicles, and equipment in the City fleet. The goal of the Fleet Division is to provide high quality repair and maintenance services to all city-owned vehicles, heavy trucks and equipment.

In this exciting opportunity, the incumbent will learn the diverse operation that comes with a government entity such as working with public safety vehicles, public works heavy equipment & vehicles, emergency lighting and sirens, sub-electrical panels, computer hardware and other specialized equipment.

The Position: 

The Public Works Supervisor is a supervisory position in the classified service in the Public Works Department serving one of the following divisions: Fleet Operations, Facilities Maintenance, which includes Building Maintenance and Mechanical Maintenance, Traffic, Street/Storm Maintenance, or Landscape Maintenance. An incumbent in this class supervises the activities of lead staff, field crews, and individuals working on the inspection, service, and repair of City-owned equipment and vehicles; maintenance and repair of City buildings; maintenance, operation, installation, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical and mechanical equipment in City buildings; traffic maintenance activities; street and storm drain construction; or landscape maintenance. An incumbent in this class exercises independent judgement and discretion not of a routine or clerical nature.

This current recruitment is for the Facilities division and includes the Mechanical Maintenance Foreman and Building Maintenance Foreman working as Public Works supervisors. The Facilities division has two work groups, Mechanical Maintenance worker and Building Maintenance worker in which we repair and maintain over 1,100,000 sq feet of facilities within the City of Santa Clara.   We are looking to fill the Supervisor position in both work groups.

Minimum Qualifications:

For all Divisions:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Minimum Education Requirements: 

Graduation from high school or possession of a GED

Minimum Experience Requirements: 

Five (5) years of progressive experience, with a minimum of two (2) years as a lead or supervisor in at least one of the following areas:

1. Repair of Fleet vehicles and equipment to include heavy and light power-driven equipment, aerial trucks, combination trucks, fire apparatus, and various other specialized equipment used in Public Works Departments that burn gas, diesel, and alternative fuels.
2. Building construction trades, including painting, carpentry, plumbing, minor electrical work, building hardware, and/or building security including key and alarm systems.
3. Maintenance, operation, installation, and troubleshooting of diesel and gas engines, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, emergency generators and mechanical equipment found in heavy duty machinery and large buildings, such as manufacturing plants, office buildings, or public building.
4. Operation of street maintenance equipment, spray painting equipment, and the installation of pavement marking materials.
5. Street or storm drain construction and/or maintenance experience.
6. Grounds-keeping, gardening, tree trimming, or landscape maintenance.

Acceptable Substitution: 

Five (5) additional years of progressive experience in any area listed above may be substituted for the required two (2) years of lead or supervisor experience.

License/Certifications: 

All licenses and/or certifications are required at the time of appointment and for the duration of employment, unless stated otherwise.

For all Divisions:

• Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license.
• A Fall Protection Certification is required at the end of the probationary period and for the duration of employment.

For the Facilities Maintenance Division – Mechanical Maintenance:

• Possession of a HVAC/Refrigerant certification.
• Possession of a California State issued Forklift certification is required by the end of the probationary period and for the duration of employment.
• RRP Certification for the renovation, repair and painting of public facilities is required by the end of the probationary period and for the duration of employment.
• Competent Person Class III Certificate for asbestos 16-hour training to comply with Cal-OSHA, Title 8, CCR 1529.

Desirable Qualifications: 

For all Divisions:

• An Associate Degree in Automotive Technology, Business, Construction Management, Public Administration, or related field.

For the Facilities Division – Mechanical Maintenance:

• Experience with in-house Building Management System (B.M.S.), Direct Digital Controls (D.D.C), and Variable Air Volume (V.A.V.).

Other Requirements:  

• May be required to work odd and unusual hours in the performance of duties and in emergency situations and to be available on an on-call basis, as assigned.
• Incumbents with a California Commercial driver's license may be subject to drug and/or alcohol testing as mandated by federal regulations.
• Must be able to perform all of the essential functions of the job assignment.
