Recreation Services Coordinator 1 is responsible for marketing, outreach, event planning and part-time staff recruitment efforts. Past responsibilities have included leading monthly Activities newsletter production, creating and analyzing social media efforts, assisting with marketing related projects, leading all recruitment and program outreach efforts and assisting to plan events like park grand openings, 4th of July Festival, Sunset Movies Series and the Community Awards program that support the Library and Recreation Services Department's Mission Statement.

DESCRIPTION:

Substitute preschool instructor plans, organizes, and implements a program of instruction for preschool as part of scheduled recreation activities; develops courses to be a part of preschool, inventories, and maintains material and equipment requirements for program; supervises and trains Preschool aides and volunteer assistants to assist in conducting the program as needed; assists in publicizing programs to the general public; represents the City before general public as part of assigned functions; coordinates assigned program activities with other departmental programs.

This classification differs from that of a Preschool Teacher which is an as needed position. Substitute teachers are responsible for assisting the preschool teachers as needed, on an on-call basis with no set schedule. This is a part-time temporary, non-benefited position limited to 995 hours per fiscal year.

Receives direct or general direction from the Recreation Coordinator. Exercises no direct supervision over staff.

Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.

Engage with participants in a variety of positive, fun, and age-appropriate activities. Typical activities include, but are not limited to: arts, crafts, reading, snack preparation, indoor and outdoor play, field trips, and special events.

Supervises program participants.

Assists with leading activities, programs, and events.

Maintains a positive and safe work environment.

Encourages participation and facilitates activities.

Supports fellow Preschool Teachers and participates in maintenance of facility and equipment.

Attend staff meetings and respect departmental policies and procedures.

Answer questions and field complaints from customers and refer them to appropriate staff.

Performs other duties as required.

Open and close classrooms and facilities for weekday, weekend, and evening recreation classes and events.

Must be 18 years of age and have an equivalent of two years college and minimum of one year experience in facilitating a program for preschool age children or two years related experience in a leadership position working with preschool age children. At least 15 units of college level courses in Early Childhood Education are mandatory. Current Certifications in CPR and First Aid are desirable. The Preschool Instructor should have knowledge of safety precautions, and should possess a positive and enthusiastic attitude.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with teammates, parents, volunteers, and other members of the community.

Current CPR and First Aid certification are desirable. (CPR and First Aid certification and re-certification will be offered to new employees on June 13, 2025).

Must be able to provide official documentation of hours and certifications obtained within Early Childhood Education.

Substitute hours are not guaranteed and may vary.

Typical Preschool Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

Typical Lunch Bunch Schedule: Monday through Thursday, noon to 2 p.m.

Worked hours outside the typical schedule can be up to 7 hours a month

Must be able to stand, sit, bend, squat, climb, kneel, jump, run, twist and reach, and lift and carry weight of 30 pounds or less while coordinating and or/ supervising activities.

• Alternative Minimum Qualifying Education/Experience:  Possess at least 60 semester college units from an accredited college or university (related coursework preferred); and possess and maintain a CA Drinking Water Distribution Grade D5 certification issued by the State of CA Water Resources Control Board.

 The Utilities Department is a newly formed department focused on delivering exceptional water and wastewater services. The team promotes excellence in operations, integrity in decision-making, and collaborative problem-solving. The Utilities Department manages a combined budget of approximately $30.9 million for FY25, with $16.4 million allocated to sewer services and $14.5 million to water services. The Utilities Department supports regional wastewater treatment through technical and strategic engineering work at the South County Regional Wastewater Authority (SCRWA). The Utilities Business Manager is an exciting opportunity for a financially savvy, strategic thinker to make a meaningful impact in one of Gilroy’s most vital service areas. The Utilities Business Manager will be responsible for managing multiple enterprise funds, guiding long-range financial planning, and leading rate studies and forecasting that drive decision-making for water, wastewater collection, and wastewater treatment services. This role will supervise two staff, and may supervise more staff as the department grows. They will serve as a critical advisor to the Utilities Director, helping to shape operational strategy. Experience working with grants, contracts, and municipal systems is highly valued. The Utilities Operations Manager will oversee an Operations Division of 18 staff with two direct reports, and may supervise more staff as the department grows. In addition to supervising day-to-day functions, they will lead the implementation of new technologies, including a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), while also cultivating a culture of safety and accountability. The Senior Environmental Engineer - Wastewater will lead high-profile wastewater treatment initiatives for the South County Regional Wastewater Authority (SCRWA). The Senior Environmental Engineer - Wastewater will oversee one direct report and, working alongside the third-party contractor for the treatment plan, will serve as the technical lead for complex CIP projects, regulatory reporting, consultant oversight, and cross-agency collaboration. The Engineer will play a pivotal role in ensuring long-term environmental sustainability while enhancing infrastructure critical to regional growth. The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in sanitary or environmental engineering and understanding of regional, state, and federal-level regulations. • Education: Bachelor’s degree with major coursework in business, public administration, accounting, or other similar field of study. Master’s degree is desirable.
• Experience: 4+ years professional finance or budget experience, including 1 year supervisory.

• Education: Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, construction management, environmental sciences, public administration, or a related field of study.

ABOUT THE POSITION
The City of Gilroy is hiring two part-time Recreation Specialist positions, each with a distinct focus. One position will support Youth, Adaptive, and Senior programs, while the other will focus specifically on serving the East Gilroy neighborhood with various recreation programs. Both roles will involve leading programs for socio-economically disadvantaged youth, teens, and adults, managing part-time staff, program planning, administering grants, and collaborating with local organizations and public agencies.
