THE POSITION: The Public Works Department at the City of San Mateo has an opportunity for up to three (3) interns who will assist on various municipal projects. Positions are considered for several fields of interest, including, but not limited to, the following examples:

• Capital Improvement Program (CIP) – Civil engineering majors with an interest in capital improvement projects, design of civil infrastructure, and construction delivery procedures. Assist with project standards, standard specifications and drawings, CAD drafting, plan review, construction cost estimates, data collection and analysis.
• Traffic Engineering – Civil engineering majors with an interest in parking, transportation, and traffic engineering. Assist with creating parking zone signage, mapping, program evaluations, document organization and filing, field data collection and analysis, traffic studies, and plan reviews.
• Clean Water Program (CWP) – Civil engineering majors with an interest in water resources, sanitary sewer rehabilitation, design, construction. Assist with project standards, standard specifications, plan review, construction cost estimates, data collection and analysis, and construction site visits.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• BA/BS Candidate or MA/MS Candidate in civil engineering or related field as described above is highly desirable
• Strong analytical, writing, research, and verbal skills; effective written and oral communication
• Valid California Driver’s License (Class C)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Ability to learn new information quickly
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Project) and web-based resources
• Ability to plan, organize and coordinate workload

DUTIES:

The primary duties will depend on the intern’s assigned position and associated field of interest and may include the following:

• • Assisting engineering project managers with administrative or technical tasks
  • Drafting engineering plans/standards in AutoCAD
  • Creating map displays using Google Earth or GIS
  • Gathering, compiling, and presenting data for engineering and construction projects
  • Organizing and tracking inspection reports, testing results, invoices, and other construction documentation
  • Conducting field assessments of the condition of streets, drainage/collection systems, and other infrastructure
  • Investigating and proposing responses to questions or inquiries from residents
  • Assist in other areas such as procurement, communication, public outreach, and public surveys.

In addition, the intern may work on a variety of other projects depending upon availability and workload.

Role description

Under general supervision, the Electric Motor Repair Technician performs skilled electrical and mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of a variety of electric motors, generators, appliances, power tools, control auxiliaries and related electrical components.

Examples of Important and Essential Duties:
According to Civil Service Commission Rule 409, the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this job code and are not intended to be an inclusive list:

1. Maintains, rebuilds, and/or repairs a variety of electric motors and other electrical devices, equipment, and machinery such as D.C. and A.C. single and three-phase motors, switches, controls, power tools, heaters, testing equipment, magnetic contactors, motor generators, batteries, and other related electrical equipment.
2. Inspects, diagnoses, and/or tests parts and equipment using megger, surge tester, hi-potential tester, bar to bar tester, and other test equipment in accordance with departmental safety standards.
3. Rewinds windings in stators, armatures and coils in AC and DC electric motors and equipment.
4. Cleans parts, tools, and equipment during the course of repair and performs routine tasks with appropriate cleaning materials/equipment.
5. Reads, understands and interprets maintenance manuals, schematic drawings and plans such as machine specifications, blueprints, layout work and drawings.
6. Drives other non-revenue vehicles as required.
7. Operates hand, pneumatic, portable power and machine tools such as, drill presses, grinders, wire crimpers, band saws, cutters and oxy-acetylene torches in accordance with departmental safety standards.
8. Maintains various written documents such as record of work performed and job reports.
9. Communicates and advises with supervisors, co-workers and others on assignments and other work-related matters.
10. Performs other related duties as needed.

Nature of Work: requires physical effort and dexterity in the use of fingers, limbs and body; and working with high voltage equipment.  May also involve possible exposure to dust and chemical fumes, which may require wearing of a respirator and other personal protective equipment; and working in inclement weather and conditions where minor injuries may occur.

How to qualify

These minimum qualifications establish the education, training, experience, special skills and/or license(s) which are required for employment in the classification. Please note, additional qualifications (i.e., special conditions) may apply to a particular position and will be stated on the exam/job announcement.

Experience:
Six (6) years of full-time verifiable experience of which two (2) years must have been as a journey-level electric motor repair technician, where duties included the electrical and mechanical repair of all types of motors, motor-generators, coils, stator and armature windings, and troubleshooting control circuitry and related devices.

Substitution:
Training in a recognized four (4) year apprenticeship program in electric motor winding repair may substitute for up to four (4) years of the required non-journey-level experience on a year-for-year basis.

License:
Possession of a valid driver's license at the time of appointment.

Note: Appointees to the position will be required to successfully complete the National Safety Council Forklift Truck Operators training course conducted by the SFMTA.

What else should I know?

Eligibility List/Score Report: 
A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible list, shall not be made public unless required by law. However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection, upon request, once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The City of Menlo Park is seeking engineering professionals, with exceptional technical and project management skills, for Senior Civil Engineer positions in the Public Works Department (Department) Capital Improvement Program (CIP) Division. The Senior Engineer will lead capital improvement projects under the supervision of the City Engineer or Public Works Director. The CIP team delivers projects for City owned facilities including streets, buildings, storm and domestic water, and parks. The Senior Civil Engineer is responsible for executing CIP projects from planning through completion and managing assigned staff.

• 26 City-owned buildings/facilities and their grounds
• A fleet of over 250 vehicles and pieces of equipment
• 97 miles of streets
• Drinking water delivery for 16,000 customers
• Flood protection and stormwater management programs particularly along the San Francisco Bay, San Francisquito Creek and Atherton Channel
• 14 parks, 2 open spaces, 14 playgrounds, 2 dog parks, 9 sports fields, and 14 tennis/pickleball courts
• Efforts to preserve and expand the urban canopy, including 20,000 public trees
• Multimodal transportation services including 42 traffic signals, safe routes to schools and citywide shuttle programs. 

The department has nearly a $40 million operating budget supported by over 25 different special/dedicated funding sources for the varied programs and services provided to the community. In addition, the City has an approximate $100 million capital improvement program, in part due to a successful track record in pursuing grants from a variety of local, state and federal sources. 10. Enforce City and program rules and guidelines and conduct necessary discipline of staff and volunteers. 11. Train the Assistant Pool Manager to function as manager in the absence of the Pool Manager.

12. Maintain a safe and clean swimming pool environment.

13. Maintain personal fitness sufficient to perform the required duties.

14. Conduct and attend pertinent staff meetings as required during the season.

QUALIFICATIONS

Village Park Preschool is a play-based preschool program offered by the City of Burlingame Parks and Recreation Department at Village Park. We offer 3 programs: Lil’ Sprouts (2 year olds), Cottage Kids (3 year olds), and Afternoon Owls (3 year olds).  The emphasis of the program is physical, social, and emotional growth in a child-centered environment. Preschool Teacher

The City of Burlingame is looking for an energetic, caring, creative, and responsible Preschool Teacher. Under direction of a Recreation Supervisor, the Preschool Teacher plans, schedules, and organizes preschool classes for the City’s Village Park Preschool program, assures policies and procedures are maintained, and performs related work as required.

Essential Duties

• Plan, organize, and implement activities that support early childhood education and socialization
• Lead a variety of activities including, but not limited to, arts and crafts, organized games, story time, music/singing activities, science, cooking, early writing skills, and interactive circle time
• Ensure proper safety precautions are observed
• Maintain and care for supplies, equipment, and the facility
• Report any supply requests and facility maintenance needs
• Set up daily snack, change diapers and support toilet training

Summary Description

Under the direction of the Pool Manager, organizes and instructs swim classes, maintains records and documentation involved with instruction classes, monitors swimmers in the pool area, enforcing pool rules and regulations, preventing accidents and rescuing swimmers in distress during public swim sessions. This is an at-will, intermittent, part-time, hourly position without City-paid benefits.  Some evening and weekend work may be required.

Representative Duties

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

1. Conduct all levels of swim instruction and water safety lessons for participants from ages six months to adult.
2. Assist in curriculum instruction planning and pre-registration program to assess participants’ ability levels.
3. Patrol and monitor aquatics facility, watch for accidents and hazards in the pool areas; enforce rules.
4. Responsible for following accepted lifesaving practices and standards including the administering of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), O2 and First Aid as needed.
5. Assist with facility operations, aquatics competitions and special events throughout the year, including setup and cleanup.
6. Assist with desk reception, telephone support and related customer service activities; accepts registrations, collect fees and process receipts on a City computer.
7. Responsible for meeting all program goals and objectives.
8. Complete accurate reports and documentation of accidents and incidents in pool and pool area.
9. Attend scheduled staff meetings.
10. Assist with routine pool cleaning and maintenance as needed.
11. Responsible for maintaining a safe and clean swimming pool environment.
12. Responsible for maintaining personal fitness sufficient to perform the required duties.
13. Perform other position-related duties designated by the Pool Manager.

 

QUALIFICATIONS
