DEFINITION

Under general supervision, the Assistant/Associate Planner performs professional-level work in current and/or advanced planning and special projects. Completes technical assessments and studies and prepares written analyses and reports. Provides community outreach and education.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the entry-level class in the Planner series. Initially under close supervision, Assistant Planners learn to apply concepts and work procedures and perform professional planning work. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise. As experience is gained, assignments become more varied and are performed with greater independence. Positions at this level usually perform duties required of the positions at the Associate level, but usually exercise less independent judgment and discretion in matters related to work procedures and methods.

Associate Planner

This is the fully qualified journey-level classification in the Planner Series. Positions at this level are distinguished from the Assistant Planner by the elevated performance of a full range of duties as assigned, working independently, and exercising judgment and initiative. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Provide general assistance and advice to the developers and the public on current planning and zoning matters, both orally and in writing.

Received direct and general supervision from the Community Development Director or designee. Exercises no supervision of staff. Exercises technical and functional direction over and provides training to interns.

FOLLOWING:

Assistant and Associate Planner

• Serves as project manager on planning and development projects, including processing applications and reviewing plans for routine to complex commercial, industrial, residential, mixed use, and/or tree removal projects.

• Provide general assistance and advice to the developers and the public on current planning and zoning matters, both orally and in writing.
• Process development permit and subdivision applications for hearing in accordance with State law.
• Performs plan check functions for various projects. Receives and reviews applications for building permits for completeness.
• Reviews business license applications and ensures consistency with land use standards and prior development and entitlement approvals.
• Prepare and present reports for Planning Commission and City Council action on current advanced planning projects.
• Prepare periodic major and minor revisions to the Zoning Ordinance, General Plan and Coastal Land Use Plan.
• Formulate, prepare and present ordinances, projects and studies addressing special planning problems and issues related, for example, to Community Development funding, redevelopment, commercial development, provision for low and moderate income housing, or coastal access.
• Periodically work with community groups and committees on special projects with Zoning Ordinance and General Plan revisions. May be asked to represent City at regional meetings related to Community Development.
• Provide general assistance and advice to the developers and the public on current planning and zoning matters, both orally and in writing.
• Assists the public at the front counter, on the phone, via email, and answering questions and providing information regarding zoning, land use, code interpretation, development standards, project status, and the City’s processes.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

In addition to the Assistant Planner duties, Associate Planner duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Writes staff reports and collects supporting documentation for submission to the Planning Commission, City Council, Open Space and Parkland Advisory Committee, and other commissions and committees.
• Interprets and ensures compliance with City codes, General Plan, Specific Plan, and California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).
• Attends meetings, conferences, workshops and training sessions. Attends and participates in professional group meetings. Seeks and maintains knowledge of new trends and innovations in the field of urban planning and other types of public services as they relate to the area of assignment.
• May serve as liaison to the Planning commission and other commissions and committees.
• Represents the Community Development Department and City of Pacifica in regional planning working groups, including but not limited to countywide storm water and housing working groups.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

DEFINITION 

As a Building Attendant, you will be responsible for the daily upkeep and maintenance of the Burlingame Community Center, ensuring a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for all occupants. This role requires a hands-on individual with excellent attention to detail and strong communication skills.

Hours: (Average 10-20 hours per week). Hours depend on rentals and special events. Shifts may include, but are not limited too:

Monday-Thursday: 2:30pm-9:15pm

Friday: 2:30pm-5:30pm
Saturday/Sunday: 7:30am-1:15pm
Saturday/Sunday: 12:45pm-5:30pm
As needed: Private rentals as late as 2:00am. Shifts will vary week to week. There is no set schedule.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  (include but are not limited to the following)
Opens and closes the building, provides excellent customer service, and maintains a clean, safe, and welcoming environment. Performs regular cleaning tasks such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, cleaning windows and mirrors, restocking and sanitizing restrooms, emptying trash and recycling, and wiping down surfaces. Assists with event and class setup and takedown of tables, chairs, and equipment, operates audiovisual equipment, and ensures renters follow facility policies, completing final walk-through reports as needed. Staffs the front desk to greet visitors, answer questions, answer phones, take messages, and process registrations and sales.

KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES/SKILLS:  
Knowledge of: Operation of a community center; department rules and policies; availability of current classes; basic mathematical functions; janitorial work (including but not limited to: glass and wall cleaning, dusting, trash pickup, restroom clean up, emptying of trash cans, cleaning of kitchen, etc.).

Ability to: Work independently, learn quickly, perform heavy manual labor; work extremely well with others, including customers, staff, contractors, and volunteers; explain policies and procedures clearly and concisely; read and understand English;

Benefits

Healthy Workplaces/Healthy Families Act of 2014 Paid Sick Leave Benefit. This benefit accrues at the rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked to a maximum benefit of 24 hours per year. There is no cash value associated with benefit.

Vacation Pay. This benefit is for part-time casual employees who work 30 or more days within a year from the beginning of employment with the City of Burlingame, and accrues at the rate of one hour for every 52 hours worked to a maximum benefit of 16 hours per year.  No employee shall be allowed to have an accumulation of more than two years’ worth of vacation accrual to their credit at any one time.

The City of Menlo Park is currently accepting applications to fill a Mechanic vacancy in the Fleet Services Section of the Public Works Department. A Mechanic performs diagnostic, maintenance and repair services on light and heavy city vehicles and equipment, such as automobiles, storm/sewer trucks, aerial bucket trucks, dump trucks shuttle buses, construction equipment, lawn mowers, small equipment and stationary generators; and performs other duties as assigned.

The Mechanic performs a range of skilled tasks requiring journey level or advanced journey-level class mechanical ability and aptitude. Work assignments are performed according to established rules and procedures. Independent judgment is required and is supported by supervisory review and direction.

Equipment Mechanic

This is the journey-level class in the Equipment Mechanic classification series responsible for performing the full range of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, gasoline and diesel repair and maintenance required for City vehicles, and equipment. Responsibilities include inspecting and attending to assigned areas in a timely manner, and performing a wide variety of tasks in the maintenance and repair of assigned vehicles and equipment. Incumbents are expected to work independently and exercise judgment and initiative. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. This class is distinguished from other maintenance class series in that it performs more highly skilled technical and mechanical maintenance activities. This class is distinguished from Senior Equipment Mechanic in that the latter leads, trains, and oversees assigned work and performs the more complex and difficult work in mechanical maintenance and repair of City vehicles and equipment.

Senior Equipment Mechanic

This is the advanced journey-level class in the equipment mechanic classification series performing the most complex duties required to ensure that City vehicles and equipment are maintained in a safe and effective working condition and provide the highest level of safety for City use, and providing lead direction and training to full-time and temporary staff. Incumbents regularly work on tasks that are varied and complex, requiring considerable discretion and independent judgment. Positions in this classification rely on experience and judgment to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the assigned section. The work involves problem-solving of unique issues or increasingly complex problems without precedent and/or structure. Assignments are given with general guidelines and incumbents are responsible for establishing objectives, timelines, and methods to deliver work products. Work is typically reviewed upon completion for soundness, appropriateness, and conformity to policy and requirements. This classification is distinguished from the Fleet Supervisor in that the latter has oversight of the entire fleet division, system- assignments and projects, and responsibility for organizing, assigning, supervising, and reviewing the work of assigned staff involved in maintenance operations.

POSITION DESCRIPTION 
 

The City of San Bruno Community Services Departments is hiring for a Library Page position at the San Bruno Public Library. The Library Page position is an entry-level, part-time role with limited benefits. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in playing a key role in the library's daily operations. Candidates must have a flexible schedule and be available to work 14-19 hours per week, including weekdays, evenings, and Saturdays, to meet the library's scheduling needs.

Under the general supervision of library staff, Library Pages perform routine tasks to maintain the organization of the library collections, including the shelving, sorting, and filing of books, magazines, audiovisual materials, and other library materials. Pages also clean and mend library materials, help set-up for various Library programs, assist in the opening and closing of the Library building for public access, and perform other clerical tasks as needed.

The City of San Mateo Public Works Department is seeking a Traffic and Lighting Technician

The Public Works Department is comprised of the Engineering and Facilities Services Division (EFSD) and the Environmental Services Division (ESD). The Position

The Traffic and Lighting Technician performs skilled electrical and mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of traffic control signage, traffic signal equipment, and street lights; and guides the work of and trains other maintenance personnel, and performs related work as required.  Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Guide and participate in the work of other maintenance personnel.  Ability to set-up work zone safety and prepare traffic control work plans.
• Inspect, install, remove, and repair signal controls and auxiliary equipment such as light standards, control boxes, light fixtures, lamps, and circuitry; diagnose malfunctions; adjust and replace electronic and mechanical components.

• Investigate complaints and reports of signal and traffic light malfunctions; adjust, repair or remove defective equipment; make field repairs of damaged equipment.
• Identify, locate and indicate with appropriate identification markers underground utilities (USA); respond to USA work orders within regulatory requirements; and document services accordingly.
• Be available for standby assignments in accordance with Department policies and procedures.
• Assist in the design of electrical circuits and systems for street lighting and traffic signals.
• Inspect the work of contractors during the course of construction and upon completion.
• Monitor traffic control computer and make adjustments as necessary.

The Traffic and Lighting Technician receives general direction from the Field Maintenance Manager and direct supervision from a Public Works Supervisor or higher level department staff and may exercise technical or functional direction over and provide work review to a Traffic Safety Worker or Maintenance Worker I/II.

Job Description:  

The City Manager’s Office has a full-time, 40 hours per week, non-benefited summer internship opportunity. The main function of the job is to perform municipal research and analytical work on an entry-level professional basis.

The workload will be a balance of assisting in daily municipal operations and special projects. Duties may include, but are not limited to, town-wide capital inventory, risk management, citizens’ requests, record management, benchmarking, policy analysis and research, and govern a technology assessment. THE POSITION: The Public Works Department at the City of San Mateo has an opportunity for up to three (3) interns who will assist on various municipal projects. Positions are considered for several fields of interest, including, but not limited to, the following examples:

• Capital Improvement Program (CIP) – Civil Engineering majors with an interest in capital improvement projects, design of civil infrastructure, and construction delivery procedures. • BA/BS Candidate or MA/MS Candidate in civil engineering or related field as described above is highly desirable

What You’ll Do

The Associate Engineer will perform professional engineering work in the design, investigation, and construction of public works and related projects; to act as project manager in assigned capital projects; and to do related work as required.

This is the journey level class within the professional engineering series and highly encourages professional engineering license registration. Positions in the class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the lower class of Assistant Engineer, or when filled from the outside, require prior advanced technical or professional engineering work experience. This position receives direction from higher level engineering staff. It may exercise technical supervision over lower-level staff within the work unit and exercises technical or functional supervision over technical engineering staff.

Depending upon assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: 

• Design and prepare plans and specifications and cost estimates for public works projects including pumping stations, streets, storm drains, sewer lines, and related projects. 
• Research project design requirements: perform complex calculations and prepare estimates of time and material costs. 
• Design and prepare plans and specifications for the installation of traffic signals, traffic control devices, and street lighting systems. 
• Review field projects being studied, designed, or constructed. 
• Assign routine investigation, design and drafting tasks to technical subordinates, request 
• survey, mapping and data collection; review completed work; assist in the solution of difficult problems. 
• Research publications and industry information sources to remain current with modern developments, principles, and procedures. 
• Develop revised design and construction standards for public works structures and appurtenances. 
• Investigate field problems affecting property owners, contractors, and maintenance operations. Prepare estimates and feasibility reports for new or modified services and structures. 
• Design and maintain spreadsheets and databases on mainframe and personal computers; write and maintain special programs on personal computers. 
• Fully utilize the computerized work systems in accordance with workflow processes. 
• Participate in the planning, checking, review, and processing of plans for private developments affecting city streets, sewers, drains and related public works facilities and ensure that they meet all City-imposed requirements; analyze materials and design data submitted to the City. 
• Prepare special engineering studies and reports. 
• Prepare various applications for state and federal grants. 
• Administer and enforce City Codes and standards on engineering projects. 
• Determine conformance of parcel and subdivision maps and improvement plans to City requirements; maintain status of parcel and subdivision maps. 
• Serve as staff to a variety of City commissions, boards, and committees on public works or traffic engineering matters. 
• Coordinate public works activities with other City departments, divisions, and sections and with outside agencies. 
• May supervise and train professional and technical staff. 
• Provide staff assistance to the Department Head or Division Manager, including special projects, complex project management, reports, prepare staff reports, and represent the City at City Council meetings. 
• Maintain current knowledge of new trends and innovations in the professional fields, participate in professional groups. 
• Research, negotiate, manage select and monitor contracts with vendors. 
• Advise the public or other city staff in processing transactions in the area his/her professional expertise or maneuvering city policies or responds to inquiries and requests by public, departments, press, or other department staff. 
• Develop and/or deliver high level materials, trainings, or presentations widely disseminated to the City or the public. 
• Manage large scale projects that span long time horizons and require high level expertise. Process city transactions. 
• Perform other duties as assigned.
