The Position 

The San Bruno Police Department is recruiting for Public Safety Dispatchers. The San Bruno Police Department has a long-standing tradition of small-town service with big-city dedication to public safety.  Public Safety Dispatchers are responsible for public safety dispatch and related records management activities. This position operates on a 24-hour, 365 days per year basis, and may be assigned to either a day, swing, or graveyard shift on a regular, rotational basis that includes nights, weekends, and holidays.  Public Safety Dispatchers perform a wide range of duties involving radio, telephone, and computers, applying various procedures and codes. Dispatchers receive and transmit emergency and non-emergency telephone and radio traffic as well as process communication reports, records, and radio logs, while maintaining a high level of confidentiality.  Dispatchers may also support the Police Department by performing clerical tasks, training, assisting with fingerprinting, and being accountable for financial transactions.  This position is integral in supporting the goals and objectives of the City and Police Department.   

Essential Duties 

• Receives and transmits emergency telephone and radio traffic.   

• Maintains and processes a variety of communications reports, records and radio logs. 

• Operates a dispatch console, uses Computer Aided Dispatch (C.A.D.) System and other computer programs to process information and records. 

• Maintains a high level of confidentiality. 

• Performs collateral duties including a variety of related clerical tasks: assisting in preparation of work schedules; training and evaluating performance of new employees; conducting training sessions; assisting in fingerprinting and jail operations, which may include searching prisoners; and is accountable for handling cash, bond, and check transactions.

• May act as Records/Dispatcher Supervisor in their absence. 

• Maintains liaison with other Department Divisions, City Departments, and other law enforcement and emergency response agencies. 

• Maintains various C.A.D and Record Management Files.

Minimum Qualifications

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION 

Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: One (1) year in a law enforcement agency within the last thirty-six (36) months and possession of a current Basic California P.O.S.T Certificate.

Education: High school diploma or equivalent (possession of an Associate's degree or Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is desirable).

THE POSITION:

This can be a stressful and demanding job located within the Police Department requiring shift work, weekend and holiday duty.  Although hours vary, this is an on-call, as-needed position that is paid hourly.  Using RIMS (Records Information Management System), per diem dispatchers dispatch police and transfer calls to Fire & EMS under emergency conditions; receive residential alarm calls and take calls of an emergency and non-emergency nature from citizens; greets public and assists at the front counter.  Dispatchers must remain calm and tactful under trying conditions, remembering detailed information, and thinking clearly while performing several tasks at once.

To maintain familiarity with the Atherton Police Dispatch Center, we can offer guaranteed 16 hours of shifts spread over a few days per month. You'll provide break relief while also getting a chance to work with another dispatcher. Since we may not always have many shifts available, expectations would be that you would also assist with open shifts/sick calls as needed and not just rely on the 16 hours.

Positions may involve substituting at different corners or a regular location assignment.  In general, these assignments are a split shift with approximately ten (10) hours per week.  School Crossing Guards are required to work outside regardless of weather conditions and must be able to provide a uniform as specified by the Police Department.   Work includes outside duties and exposure to weather.  Work may include the physical ability to sit, stand, walk quickly, step up/down from the curb, reach, push and/or pull, twist and or rotate, bend, lift and carry up to 10 pounds, use hands hold and use a stop sign the entire shift, use other hand to stop traffic and use a whistle at the same.

The Redwood City Police Department is currently accepting applications for Per-Diem COMMUNICATIONS DISPATCHERS.  Using a sophisticated Computer Aided Dispatch terminal, the Communications Dispatcher receives emergency calls from within the public requesting police, fire, medical, or other emergency service; determine priority, and dispatch police, fire, ambulance, or other emergency units as necessary and in accordance with established procedures. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Maintaining contact with all units on assignment and maintaining status and location of police field units and fire units; Monitoring emergency alarm boxes; Coordinating emergency calls and relay information and assistance requests involving other agencies; Entering, updating and retrieving information from networks relating to wanted persons, stolen property, vehicle registration, stolen vehicles and other information. Hours will vary depending on scheduling needs, and will be approximately 20-40 hours per month.
