The City of East Palo Alto is actively seeking motivated, compassionate, personable Police Recruits. The Police Recruit attends and successfully completes an approved Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certified basic police academy training program; performs all related learning and testing activities; performs a variety of routine to complex field and administrative activities in support of police services and programs for the City’s Police Department; provides comprehensive non-sworn staff support to Police Department supervisory and management personnel on a wide variety of law enforcement programs, projects, and services; responds to public requests and performs related duties, as assigned.

Possession of and ability to maintain a valid California Driver’s License.

Possession of a POST (Peace Officer Standards & Training) written examination certificate with a preferred T-Score of 52 or above and a passing score for the WSTB physical agility examination. Or possession of a National Testing Network Law Enforcement written examination certificate with a preferred score in the 90th percentile and a passing score for the WSTB physical agility examination.

Necessary Special Qualifications:

Free of any felony convictions.

Effective January 1, 2023, peace officers must be legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law. There are no specific citizenship requirements per Senate Bill 2. California Government Code Section 1031(h) limits employment authorization documents to those consistent with Section 274a.2 of Title 8 of the Code of Federal Regulations. Specific documentation requirements can be found on the I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification form issued by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Government Code section 1031(g) permits departments to adopt additional and/or higher standards.

Age not less than 21-years-old at time of appointment to the rank of police officer.

Vision in each eye, correctable to at least 20/30.

Must pass a background investigation.

Must meet all Department medical, physical and psychological standards.

The Position:

This is a non-sworn classification structured for incumbents hired for the purpose of becoming a sworn police officer.  Police Officer Trainees are hired into this civilian position for the period prior and during the time they are assigned to a POST-certified Basic Law Enforcement Academy.  Upon successful completion of training at the academy and upon the availability of a Police Officer position, Police Officer Trainees are sworn in and appointed to the classification of Police Officer.  Police Officer Trainee benefits are limited to those of a civilian employee.

THE POSITION:

The City of San Rafael is recruiting for the position of Police Cadet (3 positions available).  This is an excellent job opportunity for students interested in law enforcement.  Under direct supervision, this fixed-term/limited term, civilian position provides general and specific information and assistance to the public.  The position also provides logistical assistance to all police department functions.  The primary assignments for the Cadet position are crime prevention, patrol support, and records/front office support. 

This position performs the following essential job duties:

• Maintains inventory of supplies and equipment
• Photocopies documents, files reports and manages additional work requests
• Uses personal computers and software applications for data entry and records maintenance
• Ensures proper calibration and maintenance of technical equipment and instruments
• Cleans and maintains work areas and machinery
• Assists with vehicle fleet cleaning and maintenance
• Performs related duties as required

The City of San Bruno is currently accepting applications for Public Safety Dispatcher, Per Diem candidates. 

The Position 

The San Bruno Police Department is recruiting for Public Safety Dispatchers. The San Bruno Police Department has a long-standing tradition of small-town service with big-city dedication to public safety.  Public Safety Dispatchers are responsible for public safety dispatch and related records management activities. This position operates on a 24-hour, 365 days per year basis, and may be assigned to either a day, swing, or graveyard shift on a regular, rotational basis that includes nights, weekends, and holidays.  Public Safety Dispatchers perform a wide range of duties involving radio, telephone, and computers, applying various procedures and codes. Dispatchers receive and transmit emergency and non-emergency telephone and radio traffic as well as process communication reports, records, and radio logs, while maintaining a high level of confidentiality.  Dispatchers may also support the Police Department by performing clerical tasks, training, assisting with fingerprinting, and being accountable for financial transactions.  This position is integral in supporting the goals and objectives of the City and Police Department.   

Essential Duties 

• Receives and transmits emergency telephone and radio traffic.   

• Maintains and processes a variety of communications reports, records and radio logs. 

• Operates a dispatch console, uses Computer Aided Dispatch (C.A.D.) System and other computer programs to process information and records. 

• Maintains a high level of confidentiality. 

• Performs collateral duties including a variety of related clerical tasks: assisting in preparation of work schedules; training and evaluating performance of new employees; conducting training sessions; assisting in fingerprinting and jail operations, which may include searching prisoners; and is accountable for handling cash, bond, and check transactions.  

• Plans, organizes, and directs dispatching and related activities on an assigned shift. This may include preparing schedules and prioritizing work; observing work performed by Dispatcher I employees to ensure compliance with standards; approving time off; conducting employee evaluations; and providing effective recommendations on personnel matters. 

• Prepares and maintains training and procedure manuals.  As required, prepares special reports, and undertakes projects for Management Staff.  

• May act as Records/Dispatcher Supervisor in their absence. 

• Maintains liaison with other Department Divisions, City Departments, and other law enforcement and emergency response agencies. 

• Maintains various C.A.D and Record Management Files. 

• Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

SALARY:  $9,343.57 - $9,810.74 - $10,301.26 - $10,816.32 - $11,357.14 per month. Appointments to this classification are normally made at the first step of this five-step salary range.  Candidates are also eligible for additional salary incentives including Holiday Pay, Education Incentives, and other special assignment pays.

SELECTION PROCESS:

Applications will be screened for completeness.  After an initial screening of applications, those applicants that meet the minimum qualifications and appear to best meet the Department’s need will be invited to participate further in the recruitment process and will be contacted for an oral panel interview.   Candidates must receive a score of 70% or higher on the oral interview exam to be placed on the initial eligibility list.  A limited number of candidates from the eligibility list will be invited for an interview with the Police Commander and Police Chief.  Depending upon the number of candidates in each recruitment set, this process may be altered.    After a mutual interest has been established, a thorough background investigation will be conducted, including fingerprinting and a polygraph.  Upon successfully passing the background investigation, candidates must successfully complete a psychological evaluation, a medical evaluation, and provide proof of legal right to work in the U.S. prior to appointment.  The Police Chief will make the final recommendation for appointment.

The Foster City Police Department is centered on the philosophy of Community Oriented Policing. As with all employees, the Police Corporal is expected to make non-enforcement contacts with the public in an effort to more clearly identify the needs of the community, and to assist the public in solving community problems. 

Class Characteristics
This is a lead-level class in the sworn officer series responsible for performing a wide variety of law enforcement tasks in support of a municipal police department. Incumbents perform the full range of duties as assigned, working independently, and exercising judgment and initiative. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. This class is distinguished from Police Sergeant in that the latter exercises technical and functional direction over and provides training to lower-level staff on an assigned shift.

Education and Experience
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade; successful completion of 30 semester units of college course work at an accredited institution.  An Associate's degree or higher is desirable. The minimum education requirements may be met by the possession of an Intermediate Post Certificate.

Experience: Possession of a POST Basic Certificate at the time of application. 

Licenses and Certifications:

• Possession of a valid California Driver’s License, and a good driving record, to be maintained
  throughout employment.
• Possession of a valid Basic Certificate issued by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST). 
• Possession and maintenance of firearms qualification.

Selection Process
Applications will be reviewed for relevant education, experience, training and other job related qualifications. Based upon a review of employment applications and supplemental questionnaires received, a limited number of the qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the examination process. 

The process will consist of four Oral Panel Interview (Technical - weighted 30%; Tactical - weighted 30%; Community - weighted 30%; and Presentation - weighted 10%). An eligibility list will be established from those who pass the examination process with a score of 80% or higher. Current and future vacancies may be filled from this list. The list will remain in effect for at least one year unless exhausted sooner. 

The department will invite the most qualified candidates from the eligibility list to a final department interview. The Police department will make the hiring decision.

• Must have successfully completed a California P.O.S.T. Basic Training Police Academy within the past thirty (30) from date of hire; or 

• Must show proof of current enrollment in a California P.O.S.T. Basic Training Police Academy, and must successfully complete academy prior to appointment. 

Lateral applicants must be able to meet all Entry Level requirements listed above; and 

• Must currently be employed as a full time paid, sworn police officer for at least two years, or have been employed for at least 24 months as a full time paid sworn police officer in a civilian governmental jurisdiction prior to application; or  

• Possession of a valid California P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate or equivalent as approved by P.O.S.T. 

• Must have successfully completed a current California P.O.S.T. Basic Training Police Academy or equivalency.

a) POST Entry-Level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLETB): This exam must be completed in less than 2.5 hours, and it must be passed with a minimum T-Score of 42. To schedule for the exam, visit the South Bay Regional Public Safety Training Consortium's website at: www.theacademy.ca.gov.  

 

b) National Testing Network (NTN) Corrections REACT Exam: Passing scores accepted for this exam are Video Judgement Test 65% or higher; Reading 75% or higher; and Count 70% or higher. This examination is administered directly by the National Testing Network, and it may be taken virtually or in person at testing sites nationwide. PELLETB: Applicants can complete the PELLETB exam at the South Bay Regional Public Safety Training Consortium. The areas covered by the test include spelling, vocabulary, clarity, reading and CLOZE (use contextual clues to complete a passage that contains missing words). Applicants are responsible for contacting South Bay Regional Public Safety Training Consortium and self-enrolling in the required written exam. National Testing Network (NTN) Corrections REACT Examination (Online option): Applicants can register with NTN and schedule for the written examination by visitingwww.nationaltestingnetwork.com, select “Find Jobs”, then select “Corrections Jobs” and sign up for [San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office]. You must take the examination first before applying. Candidates who have already completed the National Testing Network (NTN) examination may submit their results through NTN to our agency. The exam must have been taken within one year of your submitted application. Candidates must meet the minimum passing scores. Acceptance of NTN exam scores are subject to verification with National Testing Network.

 

Qualifications

Education and Experience: 
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.

Education: 
A high school graduate or passing the General Education Development (GED) test or other high school equivalency test approved by CDE, or completion of at least 30 college units from an accredited or approved institution to apply.

Physical Agility Exam: Qualified candidates will be invited to participate in a physical agility test which may include, but is not limited to, the following events: weight drag, obstacle course, fence/wall climb and 1.5 mile run completed in 15 minutes or less.
