The Position:

This role provides leadership and guidance to per-dem staff, serving as a coach and mentor to support their success. Strong attention to developmentally appropriate practices and safety compliance is essential to maintaining program excellence and accountability.

Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will possess a valid State of California driver’s license, with Early Childhood Education units preferred. They should have at least one year of paid leadership experience within a classroom, after-school program, or camp environment and a minimum of a high school diploma. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, are essential, particularly when working with individuals from diverse backgrounds. This position requires the ability to work independently while following direction from a coordinator, as well as the capacity to train, supervise, and collaborate effectively with staff, youth participants, and their families. Attention to detail is critical, including maintaining accurate records and submitting required documentation promptly. Candidates must be proficient in computer applications, specifically Microsoft Word and Excel, and successfully pass all required background checks upon hire. A bilingual pay differential is available for candidates fluent in identified languages. Availability is required Monday through Friday from May through August, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

Recreation Program Specialist Example Duties:
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Assist in the implementation of a 40-hour Summer Camp Training for per-diem staff.
• Collaborate with Recreation Specialists I, II, and III to plan and deliver daily camp activities that are developmentally appropriate for children aged 5-12.
• Lead recreation per-diem staff on behavior management strategies, best practices for working with youth, and daily camp routines such as sign-in/sign-out procedures, field trip management, incident/accident forms, and activity implementation.
• Occasional driving of City vehicles to support programmatic needs, including transporting youth participants on field trips.
• Provide regular and clear feedback to participants’ families regarding their child’s experience and progress.
• Manage camp supplies, T-shirt inventory, and first aid equipment.
• Support the Coordinator in weekly staff meetings to ensure smooth operations and team alignment.

GENERAL INFO 

Under general supervision, the Recreation Leader I/II provides essential support to recreation programs and services by performing custodial tasks, event setup and teardown, program support, and minor maintenance duties at various facilities, including parks and community centers. This temporary, parttime position requires working up to 20 hours per week. The role involves ensuring the facilities are clean, safe, and operational while delivering excellent customer service. Performs other duties as assigned.  
 

UNIVERSAL POSITION DUTIES (Illustrative purposes only)

• Organize, inventory, and maintain facility materials and equipment. 

• Assist in organizing and supervising recreational programs in any one or more of the following areas: children, adults, senior citizens, and participants with special needs at playgrounds, community centers, and other recreational areas. 

• Open, close, and secure facilities, including locking gates and setting alarms. 

• Set up and tear down tables, chairs, and equipment according to event/program requirements. 

• Perform light maintenance and cleaning tasks to ensure facility safety and upkeep. 

• Enforce policies, maintain discipline, and provide customer service to patrons. 

• Monitor and report facility issues and potential hazards. 

• Assist with special events and activities as needed. 

• Respond to and resolve patron inquiries and complaints. 

• Participate in safety training and emergency procedures.

CAMP COUNSELOR LEAD (Illustrative purposes only) 

• Oversee and guide program staff in their daily duties, ensuring high standards of supervision, engagement, and participant safety. 
• Assist in planning, organizing, and scheduling program activities to create a balanced and enjoyable experience.
• Address behavioral issues and manage group dynamics and foster a positive environment for participants and staff.
• Enforce safety protocols, emergency response procedures, and monitor the physical and emotional well-being of all participants. 
• Serve as a liaison between camp counselors/program staff, families, and City Staff, addressing concerns and maintaining effective communication. 
• Oversee staff tasks, support logistical operations, and ensure adherence to camp policies, health, and safety regulations.
• Model positive behavior, establish rapport with families, and maintain accurate program records. 
• Mediate participant disputes, assist camp counselors/program staff with behavior management, and provide ongoing support and assistance to staff, participants, and volunteers. 
• Communicate program updates and recommend improvements for materials and equipment.
• Ensure familiarity with and readiness for all emergency procedures and other tasks as directed by Supervisor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Check daily facility schedules and rental setup requirements.
• Use computer systems for data entry.
• Assist patrons with registration processing and POS transactions.
• Handle office tasks including mail distribution, shipments, and deliveries.
• Support office inventory management for supplies and equipment.
• Assist facility attendants and recreation programs as needed.

About the Position

The City of San Carlos is looking for one part-time (approx. 16-39-hours per week) non-benefited, in-person summer intern in the Public Works Engineering Department. The internship is open to candidates with interests in the following fields:  

• TRAFFIC AND PARKING - Civil engineering majors with an interest in traffic engineering including congestion mitigation, alternative transportation, traffic calming, traffic control devices and design, traffic safety, and other related tasks involving the study of traffic impacts on the City in multimodal transportation
• TRANSPORTATION CIP (Capital Improvement Project) - Civil engineering majors with an interest in capital improvement infrastructure project design and construction delivery process pertaining to complete streets and other related tasks to improve pedestrian and bicyclist mobility within the City of San Carlos

This intern will receive various assignments from the Public Works Department. Duties may include but are not limited to:

• Assisting engineering project managers with general clerical, administrative, and technical tasks for public works projects
• Document imaging and electronic document filing
• Checking mathematical calculations & Creating spreadsheets using Microsoft Excel
• Preparing presentations using Microsoft PowerPoint, creating schedules

The position will serve as a temporary staff member and will receive overall work direction from the Associate Engineer in the Public Works Traffic Division with general oversight by the Senior Traffic Engineer.

The primary goal of the City’s Internship Program is to provide a current undergraduate/graduate college student or recent college graduate an opportunity to apply their academic training to and learn more about the various functions of municipal government. This paid internship provides hands-on experience in the daily operations of municipal government on all levels, thus enhancing the intern’s skills and resume for a future career in government.

GENERAL INFO

Under general supervision, the Recreation Leader I/II provides essential support to recreation programs and services by performing custodial tasks, event setup and teardown, program support, and minor maintenance duties at various facilities, including parks and community centers. About the Community Development/Planning Summer Intern Opportunity

The Community Development Department fosters a vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable community through thoughtful planning, innovative development, and responsive public service. Comprised of the Building, Code Enforcement, and Planning Divisions – Community Development plays a central role in shaping Pacifica’s built environment and long-term vision. About the Economic & Housing Development Summer Intern Opportunity

The Economic & Housing Development Division advances initiatives that support fiscal sustainability, business vitality, housing production, and long-term community resilience. The Economic Development Intern will gain hands-on experience supporting business attraction and retention, marketing and tourism initiatives, special events, and strategic planning efforts aligned with the City’s adopted Economic Development Work Plan.
