The Department of Public Works is currently seeking to fill one full-time vacancy in the Engineering Services Division.

The Associate Construction Inspectors assigned to the Construction Management Services-Utility (CMS-Fee) Section is responsible for technical inspection services to ensure compliance with City and State Standards and Specifications.   The CMS-Fee Section supports the work being performed by utility companies to construct public infrastructure that will be operated and maintained by the City including storm and sanitary facilities, streets, curb/gutter/sidewalk, street lights, traffic signals, etc.   Typical duties of an Associate Construction Inspector in this section include, but are not limited to, the following: 

• Reviews plans and specifications to determine proper testing requirements and standards. 
• Inspects methods and materials used in the construction of streets, alleys, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, storm drains, catch basins, driveways, approaches, culverts, sewers, landscaping, etc. for compliance with plans. 
• Inspects actual field construction from rough grading to finished paving of streets, including installation of storm and sanitary sewer systems, concrete structures, utility installations, street lights, traffic signal systems, etc. 
• Schedules final inspections and recommends acceptance of projects. 
• Determines the acceptability of materials, especially when there is a question of inferior quality, including researching and reviewing records, logs, and data of various kinds. 
• Ensures conformance to Cal/OSHA safety regulations, including shoring of trenches, proper use of equipment and machines, and adequate public traffic control. 
• Employees may be required to lift test equipment, tools and construction materials with the use of proper equipment. 
• Performs Public Works emergency duties, such as flood watch when required. 
• Investigate and respond to construction inquires/complaints from other departments or the public. 
• Be a mentee for Senior Construction Inspector and assigned to specific inspection area.
• Be available to work various shifts; day, nights and weekends.

This position will perform professional and technical civil engineering work in the design, construction and maintenance of public works facilities. At the Assistant Engineer level, the Ideal Candidate is an experienced civil engineer who works independently and exercises sound engineering judgment and initiative. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Assist in conducting preliminary studies of engineering projects and help prepare plans for public improvements such as streets, storm drains, sewers, water works, and other public projects. Supervise, coordinate and perform professional engineering work in the design and construction of, streets, sidewalks, water and sewage facilities, and drainage structures, and other public work. Review plans, maps, specifications, cost estimates, and other work for accuracy, presentation, and conformance with established engineering practices. Perform field inspections of public works construction projects, materials testing, survey work and calculations. Prepare preliminary drawings for public works projects, tabulate field data, design improvement plans, specifications, contracts, and other documents.  Make calculations in surveying and other construction work. Assist in preparation of long-range capital improvement programs and budgets. Prepare written staff reports for departmental use and/or presentation to the City Council and City Commissions. IDEAL CANDIDATE

The Ideal Candidate is customer focused, able to communicate well both orally and in writing, and can prioritize multiple tasks with little direction. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Prepare and process business registrations.  Collect payments over the counter and through the mail.  Balance cash drawers and reconcile end of day receipts.  Set-up and maintain customers on a computer system.  Prepare or assist in the preparation of a variety of statistical reports as assigned.  Input purchase requisitions into computer system.  Enter and verify invoices for payment. Respond to routine permitting inquiries and provide customer service to the public at the permit counter, and/or via telephone, email, or fax.  Research and communicate the status of permits for applicants. Work with Building Inspectors and/or Code Compliance Officers to schedule inspections and pull related permits.  Process various transactions involving business registrations, cashiering and permitting.  Assist customers over the counter with respect to new business registrations and renewals, general building permit issues, and over the counter plan submittals.  Generate reports as needed utilizing the computerized program related to permitting and/or licensing.  Provide information and directions to the public related to community development, planning, building, engineering, code enforcement and permit processes via phone, e-mail and counter work.  Respond to citizen complaints and/or inquiries, referring more complex issues to higher level of authority as appropriate.  Review and check records, forms, and other documents for accuracy, completeness and conformance to rules and regulations.  Update forms and informational materials as needed.  Maintain files, both paper and computerized.  Regular, predictable, consistent and timely attendance is an essential function of the position.  Other duties as assigned.

Community Development (CD) Clerk I: 

This is the entry level position in Community Development Department (CDD) for clerical employees.  Employees in this class normally work under close and continuous supervision performing a group of repetitive or closely related duties according to established procedures. A CD Clerk I is normally considered to be on training status and, as assigned responsibility and breadth of knowledge increase with increased experience, may reasonably expect their position to be reassigned to the next higher class of CD Clerk II.

Community Development (CD) Clerk II: 

Positions in this class are normally filled by advancement from the lower grade of CD Clerk I, or, when filled from the outside require prior responsible clerical and/or financial record keeping experience, and cash handling including balancing funds received.  A CD Clerk II works under general supervision and, within a framework of established procedures, is expected to perform a variety of clerical duties, customer service and assistance with issuing permits with only occasional instruction or assistance.

QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination equivalent to the experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying.  A typical manner to achieve the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education: Equivalent to a High School diploma.

Experience: One (1) year of experience performing clerical or financial record keeping support work.

POSITION

To perform a variety of routine, non-hazardous and non-sworn law enforcement office and field work.  The purpose of this recruitment is to fill a current vacancy in the Woodland Police Department, as well as establish an eligibility list for future vacancies.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The Ideal Candidate will have experience working in a law enforcement agency and/or have substantial professional experience with public interactions. Candidate will be a self-starter who can work with limited supervision.  The Ideal Candidate will work well as a member of a team, be well organized and have substantial report writing experience.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Investigate routine crimes and prepare appropriate reports.  Assist with abandoned vehicle abatement.  Assist in special traffic control.  Respond to non-criminal calls for service. Operate telephone and radio equipment.  Assist in crime scene identification activities.  Assist in collection, preservation and transportation of evidence.  Maintain accurate chain of custody records.  Inventory and release of evidence and property.  Prepare property for auction.  Purge of files.  Perform Parking Enforcement function.  Report damaged or inoperative traffic signals, signs and markings. Advise the general public on parking laws, regulations and ordinances. Receive complaints regarding parking citations.  Mark vehicles reported as abandoned and conduct follow-up, including towing and storing of vehicle.  Keep records and prepare reports.  Enforce non-moving vehicle code violations and city ordinances pertaining to vehicles.  Perform general clerical duties using typewriter and word processing. Receive calls and take messages. Prepare monthly statistical reports. Retrieve and input data into computer terminal. Prepare correspondence to victims of crime. Provide clerical assistance to detectives. Process reports assigned to detectives. Process court ordered registrants.  Collect pertinent data from police reports and input data into computer.  Make presentations in small and large group settings.  Assist in producing monthly, quarterly and yearly crime statistics reports.  Assist in analyzing statistical data to develop crime patterns. Publish understandable crime information for law enforcement staff.  Coordinate facility maintenance activities and repairs.  Develop and maintain facility tracking systems.  Issue required equipment to both sworn and non-sworn personnel.  Order new and replacement equipment as needed.  Regular and consistent attendance.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS

Administer first aid in emergencies. Work off-duty hours as assigned. Assist in training of less experienced personnel.  Perform related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  High School diploma or equivalent.  Additional college course work or vocational training is highly desirable.

Experience:  Two (2) years of general administrative office work experience or one year of administrative office work in a law enforcement agency. Prefer experience with substantial public interaction.

License or Certificate:  Required upon hire, possession of a valid California driver's license.

Position Duties

As part of the Engineering Services Division, Survey Section of the Public Works Department is responsible for delivering land surveying services on a variety of City projects including street widening/improvements, storm and sanitary facilities, library/community center/fire station sites, and airfield projects. These land surveying services include, but are not limited to the following: topography, property acquisition, construction staking, pavement marking layout, and monument preservation.

The Survey Section is currently recruiting to fill one (1) Instrument Person vacancy. An Instrument Person performs a variety of sub-professional surveying and engineering functions of moderate difficulty either on a survey crew in the field or in the Survey Section office.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following: 

• Acts as instrument person on a survey party.
• Records field notes and prepares maps and sketches from survey data.
• Sets up, adjusts, and operates all types of survey instruments.
• Provides lead direction and training to other survey personnel.
• Uses modern, survey-grade Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment.
• Calculates grades and enters data into field books.
• Turns angles and extends horizontal line using a total station.
• Uses the level to obtain vertical control.
• Uses the level, total station, rod, targets to perform topographic surveying in order to describe the existing features of a piece of land in order that it may be reproduced as a plan map.
• Locates survey points by measurement, magnetometer and from maps of former surveys.
• Assist with transferring electronic field data to a PC workstation, processing and interpreting the data, and checking for errors.
• Assists with producing high-quality, computer-generated topography maps and tables using sophisticated engineering software.

This is the journey level class in a four class surveying series. This class differs from the next higher class of Survey Party Chief in that incumbents of the latter perform sub-professional surveying work and are usually responsible for completing only a segment of a surveying program or project.

Public Safety Records Specialist I

The City of Sunnyvale is recruiting for the position of Public Safety Records Specialist I for the Department of Public Safety. The Public Safety Records Specialist is responsible for performing a wide variety of administrative, technical, and clerical records support duties in the Records Division of the Department of Public Safety, including the maintenance of records and files, processing of data and reports, critical time-sensitive data entry, providing support to sworn personnel, and providing information to the public, outside agencies and departmental staff; and performs related work as required. The Records Division is staffed on a seven day/week, 24 hour/day schedule, including weekends and holidays.
