The Ranger is a sworn peace officer who provides visitor services and resource protection on MRCA owned and/or managed parkland.

This position performs a wide variety of duties including park maintenance, law enforcement, first aid, wildland firefighting, and public safety patrol. The Ranger assists the public in natural resource interpretation and performs other duties as needed.  

This is a professional position that requires a highly motivated, responsible, and organized individual. Candidate must be a self-starter who can handle an array of tasks, has good judgement, and can work independently or as part of a team.

Type

This is a full-time, non-exempt, at-will position.

Supervision

This position reports to a Supervising Ranger. Assorted tasks may be supervised directly by Division Chief or other Executive Staff. The position may provide technical and/or functional direction to volunteers and other groups.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

• Provide a wide range of law enforcement and public safety services including, but not limited to wildland firefighting, search and rescue, and first aid.
• Respond to emergency situations on parkland to protect life and property.
• Make physical arrests, issue citations, and write reports.
• Conduct criminal and administrative investigations.
• Perform traffic control.
• Use, wear, and maintain protective equipment which includes various types of firearms, batons, chemical agents, body armor, and handcuffs.
• Perform routine maintenance and repairs on agency vehicles and various equipment.
• Perform a variety of maintenance, restoration, and repair duties.
• Remove graffiti as necessary, empty trash cans, clean restrooms, clean up litter, and remove illegal dumping.
• Conduct interpretive programs, such as leading hikes, kayak trips or campfire programs.   
• Operate with substantial independence and coordinate work with others in completing assignments.
• Coordinate with organized public groups utilizing park facilities.
• Coordinate with vendors and other government entities.
• Maintain good habits of answering and responding to incoming telephone calls and correspondence, as well as when communicating and providing customer service to citizens who seek assistance.
• Maintain positive relationships with coworkers, representatives of other government agencies, non-profit organizations, homeowner’s associations, and the public at large.
• Perform related duties as required. 

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to hike, run, bend, lift, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb, lift and carry items weighing up to 60 pounds for a distance up to 50 feet both indoors and outdoors, constantly work in outdoor weather conditions, and frequently move about work sites.

Incumbents should have physical strength, endurance, and agility; be mentally alert and physically sound; and have hearing and vision sufficient to perform the essential functions of the job.

Required Hours and Location

40 hours per week or in an alternative schedule (9/80 or 4/10 program), must be available to work nights, weekends, holidays and overtime. Must be available to work at various locations.

Public Contact

As public parklands, the majority of MRCA properties are open to the general public during operating hours. This position is likely to have physical contact with members of the public in public areas such as parking lots and shared public/office restrooms and during in-person public meetings. The MRCA is committed to protecting its staff by ensuring appropriate physical distancing and proper infection control while supporting equitable access to services. PATHWAY A:

1. Possession of High School Diploma conferred by a US Department of Education recognized High School OR General Education Certificate.

2. Possession of a certificate showing graduation from a California Peace Officer Standards & Training (POST) Regular Basic Academy.

PATHWAY A CANDIDATES WILL BEGIN THE RANGER TRAINING & ASSESSMENT PROGRAM (RTAP) UPON HIRE.

 

PATHWAY B:

1. Possession of High School Diploma conferred by a US Department of Education recognized High School OR General Education Certificate.

AND

2. Current or previous employment by the Mountains Recreation & Conservation Authority as a Seasonal Ranger Assistant or Public Officer pursuant to California Public Resources Code § 5786.17.

PATHWAY B CANDIDATES WILL BE APPOINTED AS A TEMPORARY RANGER ASSISTANT UNTIL SUCH TIME AS THEY CAN BE ENROLLED IN A POST BASIC ACADEMY.

 

Knowledge of: 

• Common Windows-based programs including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases. 
• Proficiency in basic mathematics; basic grammar and spelling as required in preparing reports and records. 

Ability to:

• Prioritize varying tasks and projects, manage time, and make regular, consistent progress on multiple projects at once.
• Work independently to handle multiple tasks under deadlines.
• Revise work approach and/or tactics to address changing conditions.

All appointment offers are contingent upon the following:

• A thorough background check including submission of fingerprints to the Department of Justice and FBI, including a firearm background check, and a record clean of violent crimes or felonies.

Wages

The starting hourly rate for Ranger Trainee is $22.58 – $27.45 per hour.  At the completion of all training requirements and upon appointment as a Ranger by the Executive Officer, the wage increases to a range of $33.47 - $40.69 per hour.

Existing MRCA employees may be compensated at a higher rate if they can demonstrate, to the satisfaction of the Chief Deputy Executive Officer, that appropriate additional duties will be performed in addition to the position’s essential duties. This provision does not apply to applicants who are not currently employed by MRCA and may be exercised only at MRCA’s discretion and as budget allows.

THE POSITION

Tri-City is looking for one (1) individual to serve as a Psychiatrist I/II for the Adult Outpatient Clinic. The Psychiatrist I/II will provide medical and psychiatric treatment and diagnostic services to clients in the caseload of Tri-City and provide collaborative work with a multidisciplinary team in a public mental health agency. Provide integrated, effective, and high quality behavioral health care to the residents of Pomona, Claremont and La Verne with moderate to severe functional impairment due to mental illness.

This position is responsible for a variety of ongoing responsibilities including, but not limited to:

• Perform intake and diagnostic interviews on a scheduled and emergent basis.
• Participate in diagnostic staff evaluation of clients.
• Provide medical psychiatric treatment of clients.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Town of Atherton invites you to apply for the position of Associate Engineer in the Public Works Department. The position, general supervision, performs various professional field and office engineering work related to the management, planning, design, construction, and maintenance of the Town’s public works infrastructure, associated with the Capital Improvement Program (CIP); provides project management oversight, coordination and administration; conducts development plan reviews and inspections; confers with developers, contractors, and representatives of other agencies regarding facility and infrastructure development and maintenance; administers professional services and construction contracts; provides professional staff assistance to the Director of Public Works, other departments, and the public in areas of expertise; performs a variety of studies and prepares and presents staff reports; and assist in the development of the Department budget and monitors revenue and expense budgets on an ongoing basis.

• Plans, manages, designs, and inspects all phases of civil engineering public works construction projects, including defining the scope of the project; coordinating with permitting and public utility agencies; applying engineering principles and practices to specific problems; coordinating construction schedules with other projects and agencies; preparing and reviewing cost estimates; and inspecting construction of projects to ensure compliance with construction documents; performs related planning and design work.
• Review of proposed private development projects; including issues related to public works, hydrology, grading, scheduling, traffic control, and erosion; prepares public works conditions of approval for proposed development.
• Reviews construction plans prepared by consulting engineers and private contractors; checks plans for conformance with regulations; reviews engineering calculations; participates in pre-design, construction, and coordination meetings and issues construction permits.
• Develops consultant requests for proposal for professional and/or construction services and the advertising and bid processes; evaluates proposals and recommends project award; administers contracts after award; ensures contractor compliance with Town standards and specifications, time and budget estimates; analyzes and resolves complex problems that may arise; recommends and approves field changes as required.
• Monitors and pursues grant opportunities for improvements in public works programs.
• Participates in the development of the Town’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP)
• Participates in the San Mateo County Cleanwater Program and assists with compliance and reporting associated with the Municipal Regional (NPDES) Stormwater Permit.
• Performs other related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

 

Patrols an assigned area in radio car, on motorcycle, or on foot; answers calls for protection of life and private property, and the enforcement of city, county and state laws; conducts preliminary or full investigations depending on assignment, of prowlers, burglaries, thefts, holdups, accidents, deaths and other disturbances; directs traffic, including regulation of vehicle flow at emergency or congested situations; stops drivers who are operating vehicles in violation of laws; warns drivers against unlawful practices; collects and presents evidence with criminal prosecutions; serves warrants and subpoenas; prepares reports of arrests made, investigations conducted, and unusual incidents observed; gives information and directions to the public. Assists in maintaining police records and types records and reports; operates headquarters radio telephone equipment to dispatch officers on patrol; as ordered, acts as lead officer in the field on a shift. Performs basic investigation, consulting and crime prevention work in assisting to control juvenile delinquency; performs such other basic police work as attending fire scenes to assist in the protection of life and property, parade and crowd controlling duties, and engaging in problem-solving skills and tactics.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

To qualify for competition in this entry-level examination, you must:

 

1.         Be 21 years of age.

 

2.         Possess a United States high school diploma, or G.E.D. with qualifying scores, or have passed the California High School Proficiency Examination, or attained a two-year or four-year degree from a college or university accredited by the Western Association of Colleges and Universities.

 

3.        Have satisfactorily completed a P.O.S.T. approved academy.

 

4.         Possess a valid Class CCalifornia Driver's License by date of appointment.

 

5.         Possess a personal history which is compatible with the effective performance of sworn police duties.

 

6.         Have the physical strength, stamina and agility adequate to perform all duties of a Police Officer.

 

7.         Hear well enough to comprehend radio transmissions and long-range conversations.

 

8.         Have adequate written and oral communication skills to give instructions and explanations, conduct information-gathering interviews and write reports.

 

9.        Be able to deal with a variety of people and situations, exercising judgment, tact and self-restraint.

 

10.       Have adequate reading skills to understand and interpret orders, bulletins, laws, codes and court

             decisions.

 

11.        Be willing to work irregular hours and days and at various locations in the City.

 

12.        Be able to interact positively and cooperate with co-workers, respond politely to customers, and work as a team member.

 

13.      Be able to function under demanding time pressure.

 

14.      Be able to respond in a positive manner to supervision.

 

15.      Be able to attend work and perform duties on a regular and consistent basis

  

Education: Graduation from high school or equivalent.

         

Certification: Basic POST Certificate
