Possession of a POST (Peace Officer Standards & Training) written examination certificate with a preferred T-Score of 52 or above and a passing score for the WSTB physical agility examination. Or possession of a National Testing Network Law Enforcement written examination certificate with a preferred score in the 90th percentile and a passing score for the WSTB physical agility examination.

 

Necessary Special Qualifications:

Free of any felony convictions.

Effective January 1, 2023, peace officers must be legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law. There are no specific citizenship requirements per Senate Bill 2. California Government Code Section 1031(h) limits employment authorization documents to those consistent with Section 274a.2 of Title 8 of the Code of Federal Regulations. Specific documentation requirements can be found on the I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification form issued by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Government Code section 1031(g) permits departments to adopt additional and/or higher standards.

Age not less than 21-years-old at time of appointment to the rank of police officer.

Vision in each eye, correctable to at least 20/30.

Must pass a background investigation.

Must meet all Department medical, physical and psychological standards.

 

The Position:

This is a non-sworn classification structured for incumbents hired for the purpose of becoming a sworn police officer.  Police Officer Trainees are hired into this civilian position for the period prior and during the time they are assigned to a POST-certified Basic Law Enforcement Academy.  Upon successful completion of training at the academy and upon the availability of a Police Officer position, Police Officer Trainees are sworn in and appointed to the classification of Police Officer.  Police Officer Trainee benefits are limited to those of a civilian employee.

About the Position: The Library Activity Leader supports the Makerspace at the Downtown Library and potentially at the library branches and outreach events. They work with the library staff to create and deliver a variety of programs for children related to robotics, coding, and other STEM education concepts.  They may support additional Makerspace programming related to 3D printing, laser cutting, Cricut, machine sewing, and art projects.

THE POSITION

Under general supervision of a Police Sergeant, the Reserve Police Officer is a sworn position assigned to field operations to patrol for the prevention and detection of crime and enforcement of laws and regulations within the philosophy of community oriented policing.  Incumbents are normally expected to solve most work problems independently and to refer to supervisory personnel only those matters which involve policy decisions, technical questions and unusual problems at the entry level and make recommendations at the advanced level.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

• Enforces laws and regulations and apprehends law breakers
• Conducts crime investigations
• Patrols for the prevention and detection of crime and enforcement of laws and regulations
• Responds to radio messages or telephone instructions and investigates reported disorders or crimes
• Notes and reports complaints, accidents, offenses and damages to property
• Reports abandoned or damaged vehicles
• Directs traffic
• Makes arrests, issues citations and warnings
• Prepares reports on arrests and property impounded
• Inspects crime scenes and questions witnesses
• Analyzes clues and information related to criminal activities
• Reviews modus operandi of known criminals
• Reports on the progress of investigations and prepares assigned cases for court
• Serves warrants
• Appears in court to testify regarding arrests and other law enforcement activities

• Administers first aid or CPR when appropriate
• Develops cooperative working relationships and mutual aid agreements with other local public safety representatives
• Develops and maintains partnership building with the residential and business community as well as the other working departments within the Town of Colma

THE POSITION: The Public Works Department at the City of San Mateo has an opportunity for up to three (3) interns who will assist on various municipal projects. Positions are considered for several fields of interest, including, but not limited to, the following examples:

• Capital Improvement Program (CIP) – Civil Engineering majors with an interest in capital improvement projects, design of civil infrastructure, and construction delivery procedures. Assist with project standards, standard specifications and drawings, CAD drafting, plan review, construction cost estimates, data collection and analysis.
• Traffic Engineering – Civil Engineering majors with an interest in parking, transportation, and traffic engineering. Assist with creating parking zone signage, mapping, program evaluations, document organization and filing, field data collection and analysis, traffic studies, and plan reviews.
• Right-of-Way & Development (ROWD) – Civil Engineering majors with an interest in civil design and permitting processes. • Facilities and Fleet – Assist in a wide range of Facility Capital Improvement Projects (CIP), including ongoing maintenance programs, rehabilitation projects, and new buildings. Assistance with project management of CIP, and coordination and review of plans and documents, as well as other office and field related tasks.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• BA/BS Candidate or MA/MS Candidate in civil engineering or related field as described above is highly desirable
• Facilities and Fleet position: BA/BS Candidate or MA/MS Candidate in Architecture or related field as an alternate to a BA/BS Candidate or MA/MS Candidate in civil engineering.
• Strong analytical, writing, research, and verbal skills; effective written and oral communication
• Valid California Driver’s License (Class C)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

The primary duties will depend on the intern’s assigned position and associated field of interest and may include the following:

• Assisting engineering project managers with administrative or technical tasks
• Drafting engineering plans/standards in AutoCAD
• Creating map displays using Google Earth or GIS
• Gathering, compiling, and presenting data for engineering and construction projects
• Organizing and tracking inspection reports, testing results, invoices, and other construction documentation
• Conducting field assessments of the condition of streets, drainage/collection systems, and other infrastructure
• Investigating and proposing responses to questions or inquiries from residents
• Assist in other areas such as procurement, communication, public outreach, and public surveys.

In addition, the intern may work on a variety of other projects depending upon availability and workload.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The Digital Media & Communications Intern supports the Police Department by organizing and maintaining digital media assets, including photographs and video content. This role assists with capturing additional photos and video to expand the department’s digital media library and ensures content is easily accessible for communication and outreach needs. The intern will also help develop a portfolio of reusable design templates, flyers, brochures, and recruiting materials to support community engagement, public information, and recruitment efforts.

The Ideal Candidate for the Digital Media & Communications Intern position is a creative, organized, and detail-oriented individual with a strong interest in digital media, visual design, and public-sector communications. The successful candidate will have experience capturing and editing photographs and video, managing digital files, and creating visually consistent materials across multiple platforms.

This candidate demonstrates proficiency with design and media tools (such as Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, or similar software) and has a foundational understanding of branding, layout, and visual storytelling. They are comfortable developing templates, flyers, brochures, and recruiting materials that align with established guidelines and messaging.

Strong organizational skills, the ability to manage and catalog digital assets, and a willingness to work collaboratively with department staff are essential to this position. The ideal candidate is professional, reliable, and able to exercise discretion when working with law-enforcement-related content, while contributing positively to community engagement and recruitment initiatives.

 

THE POSITION OBJECTIVES/GOALS
The goals of the position are to:

1.  Evaluate our current supplies of digital information and create a library of quality data.

2.  Gather additional photographs and videos to supplement and improve our current library.

SALARY RANGE

The pay cycle is bi-weekly.  No other benefits compensations are provided except for worker's compensation coverage and sick leave.  Employees must contribute 1.45% of their salary to Medicare and 7.5% to a retirement plan under Federal Law.
